MATH ADVISING
TRACKS IN MATH
• Student’s major will determine their math track
• Algebra Track
• Any student whose major requires MAT 1033
• Non-Algebra Track
• Any student whose major does NOT require MAT 1033
• NOTE: We strongly recommended that students
with a Pre-BA program of study code (14902) take
Algebra track classes

ALGEBRA TRACK
MODES OF INSTRUCTION
• Linked courses (MAT0028/MAT1033)
• 8-week MAT0028 and 8-week MAT1033
• Students must register for both courses
• Make a comment that student was advised
• 6 credits
LINKED COURSES
• What should a student do if s/he does not pass the first 8-week
class.
• If the student receives a U, we recommend s/he registers for MAT
0028 the second 8-weeks or the following semester
• U adversely affects their GPA
• If the student earns a P, the student should either
• Register to take the linked, accelerated course the following semester
(especially if the student did not attend a substantial portion of the
course), or,
• Register for MAT0057 in the subsequent semester. A disadvantage of this
choice may be cost to the student because MAT0057 and MAT0028 use
different books/platforms in some campuses
• Student is withdrawn from MAT1033 by the math department or
advising
• More coordination is needed
ALGEBRA TRACK
MODES OF INSTRUCTION
• Modular Courses: MAT 0057 and MAT 0022c
• Computer assisted course
• Students take an initial assessment and work only on topics
they do not know.
• Learn through videos/notes created by mdc professors or
author and through small group classroom lectures
• Difference between 0057 and 0022c is in the contact time
• MAT0022 meets 4 times a week – 5 credits
• MAT 0057 meets 2 or 3 times a week – 3 credits
MODULAR CLASS
• What if a student does not pass MAT 0022c or MAT
0057
• If the student receives a U, that students should re-enroll in
the course in which s/he received the U.
• If the student receives a P, That student can enroll in MAT
0022c or MAT 0057, depending on the amount of time
required to finish the course (module number).

WHO BELONGS WHERE
• Determine the last math course the student took in high school
• Enroll in MAT 1033 if last math course was
• IB, AP, AICE

• Analyses of Functions
• Pre-Calculus
• Calculus
• Trigonometry

• Enroll in MAT 0022c if last math course was
• College Readiness Math
• Intensive Math
• Algebra 1
• College Success Math
• Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications
• Geometry
• Geometry Recovery
• Geometry Honors

• Liberal Arts Math 2
ALGEBRA TRACK
WHO BELONGS WHERE
• If the student’s last math course was Algebra 2 or
Algebra 2 Honors, then you need to look at the
grade the student earned
• If student earned an “A” or “B”, then students goes to
MAT1033
• If student earned a “C”, then student goes to MAT0057
• If student earned a “D” or “F”, then student goes to
MAT0022
NON-ALGEBRA TRACK
NON-ALGEBRA TRACK
• Linked course MAT 0029/MGF 1106
• MAT 0029 is a remedial course that prepares
students for MGF 1106
• Students must sign up for both courses
NON-ALGEBRA TRACK
• If student took any of these math courses in senior year, then
student goes to MAT0029/MGF1106
• College Readiness Math
• Intensive Math
• Algebra 1
• College Success Math
• Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications
• Geometry
• Geometry Recovery
• Geometry Honors
• Integrated Math
• Integrated Math 11
• Liberal Arts Math
• Liberal Arts Math 2
• Algebra 2 with a C, D, or F
NON-ALGEBRA TRACK
• Some of these students may be able to place
directly into MGF 1106
• If student took algebra II or a higher level math course in
12th grade and earned an A or B, then recommend the
student take the college’s placement test to determine if
s/he can placed directly in MGF1106.
• If student prefers to take the combination MAT0029/MGF1106,
allow him/her to do that.
