   STRATEGIES

   Make a reference to your Hook (your loosely
    related topic). OPTIONAL

   Start the conclusion by restating your thesis in
    different words. REQUIRED

   Summarize your main points REQUIRED
   Give a warning and state the consequences of
    failing to act.
   Give advice or offer a possible solution.
   Tell the reader what he should now think, do, or
    feel.
   Tell what you really think of the topic.
   Tell what lessons or truths should now be
    understood.
Write an essay about a lesson you learned.

• Grabber: Have you ever gone through
  something that was so difficult you didn’t
  think you had it in you to see it through?
  Transition: That’s exactly what happened to
  me. Thesis: When faced with losing my job
  and my husband’s health problems, I rose to
  the occasion and learned that I am stronger
  than I ever thought I could be.
• REFERENCE TO HOOK: I’m not afraid to see
  difficult situations through anymore because
  I’ve proven to myself that I’m strong.
  REPHRASING THESIS: The only way I could ever
  have learned how strong I am is by having to go
  through the loss of my job, my husband’s health
  problems, and taking care of my family all by
  myself. TRUTH TO BE UNDERSTOOD: It is
  important that everyone goes through this
  because without rising up during hard times,
  you would never know how strong you are.
• Write your conclusion to your essay. Review
  the strategies on the handout if you get stuck.

• As you wait for your one-on-one with me, use
  the GED rubric to “score” your essay. You are
  encouraged to trade papers with a partner to
  get more practice “scoring”. Offer feedback if
  possible.

Edgar had just finished training he was nervous and excited about looking for a job.  The most effective revision of this sentence would include which group of words?  (1) excited about finishing training  (2) Having just finished training,  (3) Looking for a job, Edgar had  (4) excited and nervous as Edgar. Having just finished training, Edgar was  (5) finished training even though he was nervous and excited about looking for a job.
  • 3. STRATEGIES  Make a reference to your Hook (your loosely related topic). OPTIONAL  Start the conclusion by restating your thesis in different words. REQUIRED  Summarize your main points REQUIRED
  • 4. Give a warning and state the consequences of failing to act.  Give advice or offer a possible solution.  Tell the reader what he should now think, do, or feel.  Tell what you really think of the topic.  Tell what lessons or truths should now be understood.
  • 5. Write an essay about a lesson you learned. • Grabber: Have you ever gone through something that was so difficult you didn’t think you had it in you to see it through? Transition: That’s exactly what happened to me. Thesis: When faced with losing my job and my husband’s health problems, I rose to the occasion and learned that I am stronger than I ever thought I could be.
  • 6. • REFERENCE TO HOOK: I’m not afraid to see difficult situations through anymore because I’ve proven to myself that I’m strong. REPHRASING THESIS: The only way I could ever have learned how strong I am is by having to go through the loss of my job, my husband’s health problems, and taking care of my family all by myself. TRUTH TO BE UNDERSTOOD: It is important that everyone goes through this because without rising up during hard times, you would never know how strong you are.
  • 7. • Write your conclusion to your essay. Review the strategies on the handout if you get stuck. • As you wait for your one-on-one with me, use the GED rubric to “score” your essay. You are encouraged to trade papers with a partner to get more practice “scoring”. Offer feedback if possible.
