The Indian wild ass, or khur, is a large equine species native to the deserts of India and Pakistan. It can reach speeds of 70-80 km/hr and has light brown to reddish brown coloring. The khur lives in family groups and grazes at dawn and dusk on grasses, leaves, and fruits, feeding only at night when human disturbance is high. Once widespread, the khur is now critically endangered with its last populations found in the Little Rann of Kutch in India and small parts of Pakistan due to habitat loss and hunting.
The pomfrets constitute about 2.32% of the total marine fish production in India. The bulk of the catch comes from Maharashtra and Gujarat States, which jointly contribute to about 61% of the total all India pomfret landings.
Among the demersal fishes, pomfrets belonging to the family Stromateidae are found in the catches all long the coast of India, particularly in Maharashtra and Gujarat States.
