The top three reasons identified are: 1) Poor stakeholder management, as failing to properly engage and manage stakeholders leads to misaligned objectives. 2) Inaccurate objectives or scope, as projects are more likely to fail without clear and agreed upon goals and deliverables. 3) Inaccurate requirements definition, as small missing or unclear requirements can undermine success. The survey found managing stakeholders and clearly defining objectives and requirements to be critical for project success.

Studies show that many projects either fail outright or fail to meet most of their objectives. There are a myriad of possible reasons why this might be the case. Very often, organizations go looking for a culprit and sometimes blame the project manager or even the very concept of project management itself. Sometimes they decide to “fix” the problem by getting all the project managers certified. Or they decide to standardize on a certain tool. And while certification and standardization are laudable things, they do not necessarily address the central problem or problems. This presentation will discuss the top ten reasons why projects fail and briefly discuss solutions to each problem. We will see how such areas as estimates, scope and “the accidental project manager” contribute to the problem.

Locate a professional who manages or works on special projects in health care and is willing to speak about his or her experience.
If such a person is not readily available to you, find someone in your community who has managed a project for an organization. The organization can be a volunteer service group, a faith-based group, a business, or another that meets your needs. The goal is to find an individual who has been in charge of a project important to the organization.
Review the topics and questions below that should be addressed in your interview.
Think about other related questions you might have for your interviewee and solidify your goals for speaking to and learning from this person.
