Per capita land availability is 0.3 ha per farmer (Indian express Nov 6,2009). Food grain supply 234.0 million tons, food grain demand 236.2 million tones (Praduman Kumar et al.,2016). In the year 2019 Global Hunger Index(GHI), India ranks 102nd out of 117 qualifying countries. With a score of 30.3, India suffers from a level of hunger that is serious (Global Hunger Index Organization). Nearly 1 billion people around the world suffer from hunger. Soil management is important, both directly and indirectly, to crop productivity, environmental sustainability, and human health (Mittal et al., 2008). To achieve future food security, the management of soils in a sustainable manner will be the challenge, through proper nutrient management and appropriate conservation practices. Composting basics
1. Composting is a natural process that recycles organic matter like leaves and food scraps into a dark, rich soil amendment called compost. Microorganisms break down the organic matter and release nutrients.
2. For fast composting, the pile needs the right balance of "food" or nitrogen-rich materials, bulking agents for structure, moisture of 60-70%, and oxygen from turning. This creates ideal conditions for thermophilic microbes to generate heat.
3. Proper management of factors like materials, pile size, moisture, aeration through turning ensures rapid decomposition into finished compost in 4-8 weeks that is beneficial for soil and plant growth.
Composting models

1. Composting is a natural process that recycles organic matter like leaves and food scraps into a dark, rich soil amendment called compost. Microorganisms break down the organic matter and release nutrients.
2. For fast composting, the pile needs the right balance of "food" or nitrogen-rich materials, bulking agents for structure, moisture of 60-70%, and oxygen from turning. This creates ideal conditions for thermophilic microbes to generate heat.
3. Proper management of factors like materials, pile size, moisture, aeration through turning ensures rapid decomposition into finished compost in 4-8 weeks that is beneficial for soil and plant growth.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is a technique used to determine the concentration of elements in a sample. It works by vaporizing the sample and passing it through a flame where it absorbs light from a lamp emitting a characteristic wavelength for the element. The amount of light absorbed is measured and corresponds to the concentration of the element in the original sample. AAS can be used to detect over 70 different elements and has applications in fields like pharmacology, toxicology, and food analysis. Modern AAS instruments have components like lamps, atomizers, monochromators, detectors, and readouts to precisely measure the light absorption of vaporized sample elements.

In the summer after 10th grade, I started a research project on composting the hot topic at the time under the advisory of a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley. Through research, I explored a convenient, but not well known, method of composting: Bokashi composting, a type of anaerobic composting that is odorless and on a smaller scale than traditional composting. More importantly, Bokashi, which can be done at home, eliminates the emissions associated with transportation that otherwise would be needed for sending it to a plant for composting. I experimented with both onsite Bokashi composting and offsite composting, recorded the data, and calculated the emissions. Onsite composting cost a little more money than offsite, but did result in lower carbon emissions. I completed a 3100-word academic paper, which I submitted for publication last month. Composting is a process where plant and food waste is broken down by microbes to create nutrient-rich soil. As plants decay, microbes feed on the nutrients and oxygen, starting the composting cycle. This cycle ends with the formation of fertile compost that enriches gardens and landscapes. Composting can be done at home with food scraps, paper, and dry materials either outdoors in bins or compost piles, or indoors using special machines. Outdoor composting is more beneficial due to greater oxygen circulation which prevents odor and faster decomposition over 4 months.
