When a project is born, the battle for power and control begins … over specifications, stakeholders, vendor selection, goals, technology, budget, etc. Power and control, by themselves, are a poor strategy. Control is linear thinking. Reality, the space where projects happen, is a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff where all the best laid schemes of mice and men often go awry. When they do, reality refuses to bow down to power. Control is man-made power. Strategy is real power. The power to chose, limit and prioritize while allowing for collaborative creativity and shared vision. Yes, strategy (often) defines what needs doing, thinking about, focusing on, and avoiding. But the goal of the work is to shine a light down the straightforward path, or paths, through the complexity while honoring, even savoring, the complexity itself. Strategy is hard, very hard, to do well. The rules are easy. When applied to software development, strategy is an engineering process sometimes called solution architecture. There are four elements of good strategy: 1. Telling the truth insightfully 2. Defining measurable prioritized goals 3. Overcoming hidden obstacles implicitly 4. Creating a construct, the architecture itself, in the form of a document Getting a process back on track when it's gone awry is also essential to a good strategy. This session talks about strategy in general and for a Drupal project specifically.

2015 North Bridge Future of Cloud Computing Study, with Wikibon |Broadest exploration of cloud trends, cloud migration & evolution of the cloud computing sector. Survey participation was the largest to date and included responses from 38 countries. 50 collaborators supported the 5th Annual Future of Cloud Computing study, which reveals that cloud has become an accepted and integral technology. Furthermore, the study shows that despite deployment gaps among clouds, we should expect a future powered by hybrid cloud technologies. The question of whether companies are using the cloud has morphed to how deeply cloud adoption is integrated within the business. From the bottom to the top, all products and services will in some way be powered by the cloud making the promise of goods and services that have the potential to be better tomorrow than today. IT departments have reclaimed the reins on driving company technology strategy and cloud adoption as roles, skills and processes have shifted. Importantly, We’re also seeing the emergence of the cloud as the only way businesses can truly get more out of their data including analyzing and executing on it real-time. On the investment front, 2015 could tip the scale from private to public capital for SaaS companies.

Too many projects are not (fully) successful. In many cases this is caused by issues in the management approach. Clients want to know what they get for a fixed budget. But we all know it's almost impossible to fully specify what you need. An Agile software approach proved to work for us. After implementing Scrum our projects went more smooth and we were more often delivering the right results on time. It took time to get this working. For developers it was a bit scary and for our clients it meant they really had to trust us. Today we can see our effort pays off. We wouldn't like to go back to waterfall times anymore.

To become a mainstream methodology, Agile had to overcome many potential obstacles. The first was geography…One of today’s most daunting obstacles is compliance, often bringing heavyweight documentation, required procedures that are very waterfall-ish, complex approval work flows, and complicated approval processes begins Compliance Is A Hurdle, Not A Barrier, To Agile a Forrester Research paper published in July 2011. This presentation will walk attendees through the problem of why organizations trying to manage a software development life cycle or PMO in a heavily regulated industry are fraught with challenges (e.g. externally mandated documentation levels, limiting the requirements and scope of the Product Owner, morale of employees). The presenters will discuss the fact that many of the external compliance standards (FASB, MAS, FSOC) are vague, and worse yet not written with the software development team in mind. In fact one of the risks is the interpretation of policy or external compliance standard remains on the business or with an executive (through personal / fiduciary guarantees). For example, authors of US Federal legislation (e.g. Dodd Frank Act) do not specifically consider software development when writing laws and are often ignorant to the downstream effects of said legislation for a development team based in Russia or India. When asked for clarifications the FSOC does not know enough about software development to provide clear and concise answers and the amount of documentation in the said legislation can be (a) in the thousands of pages and (b) within living documents.

Everyone agrees that technical debt is a burden on software innovation that we would rather avoid, and certainly clean up whenever possible. However, in most organizations, people don't prevent technical debt nearly as much as they should, and they don't ever get the time to clean it up. Why, then, if there are clear incentives to deal with technical debt, is it a rampant problem? In this session, we will focus on how to deal with technical debt on several levels, including the individual developer, the team, the software value stream, and the larger organization. While technical debt may manifest itself in a developer's IDE, the problem starts long before the developer decides to copy and paste some code, or creates an overly-complex and under-documented class. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second). Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.
