Finding the Composition of Limestone
Intro: Limestone is made from loose marine sediment (such as shells) that form into rock, but can
also come from dissolved calcium carbonate. When an acid is added to limestone it releases carbon
dioxide. This happens in a two step process. Step 1: CaCO3(s) 2HCl(aq) в†’ CaCl2(aq) H2CO3(aq)
Step 2: H2CO3(aq) в†’ CO2(g) H2O(l) The next reaction used is CaCl2(aq) (NH4)2SO4(aq) в†’
CaSO4(s) 2NH4Cl(aq). This is quantifying the calcium carbonate by finding out the amount
calcium ion is present. Mass Percent Composition is trying to find the amount present of a
specific component in a sample. The equation is mass % of A= (mass of A / mass of total
substance) x 100. Gravity filtration includes putting a piece of filter paper in a funnel, then pouring
the solution into a flask. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Rodney King Research Paper
On March 3, 1991 an African American man named Rodney King became a posterboy for racial
tension and police brutality in America. On this day, police officers Stacey C. Koon, Laurence
M. Powell, Timothy E. Wind, and Theodore J. Briseno attempted to pull Rodney King over
because they suspected he was driving under the influence. Mr. King then lead the officers on a
110 mph chase through San Fernando Valley, California, and finally stopped his car in a
residential area. Police officers began beating Mr. King after he got out of his car. Officers
tasered, kicked, stomped on, and hit Mr. King with their batons for about 10 minutes. THe whole
police encounter was filmed by a nearby resident named George Holliday. After the police were put
on trial,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Judge John G. Davies, who handled the case, did not try to hide his sympathy for the defendants.
Davies excluded evidence of racist comments made by the officers from the trial record. He also
made several statements, saying that he too believed the incident....would not have occurred at
all, but for Mr. King s initial misconduct. Davies elaborated on his beliefs when he stated, Mr.
King, a paroled felon, who had fled from police and resisted arrest, bore much of the
responsibility for the beating. Judge Davies obviously had sided with the officers, describing
them as having distinguished records of public service even though he knew that each man had
been involved in at least one prior criminal incident. He made his loyalties even more evident
when he said Mr. King had no serious injuries . He was only hit in the head or the face once,
possibly inadvertently. King s facial injuries included a broken cheekbone, a broken orbit (eye
socket), and 11 skull fractures. When making an appearance on L.A. Burning: 25 Years Later
Rodney King s attorney, Steve Lerman, told interviewers that the injuries of Rodney King s skull
caused massive brain damage. In addition, the trial itself was moved from Los Angeles to Simi
Valley, in Ventura County California. At that time, Ventura County was a predominantly white

I Stand Here Ironing By Tillie Olsen Olsen
According to the overview from the Alabama virtual Library they claim that Tillie Olsten I
Stand Here Ironing to be one of her best known autobiographies. (2010. LitFinder) Olsen wrote
about many things through her life but the subjects she was rather fond of include: sex, age, and
class. We see how sex and class affects women within I Stand Here Ironing . Sex, class, and age
are the key factors that limited people, mainly women that Olsen wrote about. We can see within
this story that Olsen related back to her life as a mother during this time of depression with having
multiple jobs to help keep them afloat. Olsen gave birth to four kids and at the time she worked,

Norman, The Conqueror And The Norman Army
Norman success in late 11th century England
The tactics used by William the Conqueror and the Norman army, militarily, administratively, and
culturally, impacted their success in imposing their power within the English kingdom. These
tactics worked in tandem, increasing the success of each of their objectives. The military force used
by the Normans was useful in gaining and later maintaining territories for the crown, the
administration allowed William the Conqueror s reign to act in a more effective manner under him
in the early days of his rule, and the cultural and religious structures allowed the Normans to
integrate the already closely tied Norman and English societies.
Arguably the most important factor in the exertion of power over the English was the ability by
the Normans to act militarily. The warlike attitude of the Normans, combined with the religious
aspects that will be discussed later, provided them with a ready and capable army with which to
support William s claim to the throne. The early years of William s rule, after the 1066 defeat of
Harold, emerged as a sort of military occupation within England by the Normans. These years were
crucial in the Norman advance within England. When William came to England he arrived with a
large support of military men and much of these supporting military men remained in England
because of their military duties. This army aided William not only in the initial battle against
Harold, but later as well, through their

The American Film Industry
The American film industry is one of the most far reaching and influential businesses in today s
world. Movies constantly spawn franchises which have die hard fans lined up for hours just to get
a ticket for a movie that is months away. The celebrities in our movies are elevated to a position of
super fame. It is the nature to a human to adapt to conditions over a given period of time.
Adaptation continues through into our entertainment as well. Audiences are becoming accustomed
to seeing the same things on the screen over and over again. Filmmakers are constantly trying to
keep audiences entertained, which is becoming an increasingly difficult task. Today s general film
going audience quickly becomes bored and seeks more stimulation from the movies.
Computer generated images or CGI has been a chief method to keep modern audiences
entertained, while being cost effective to practical effects. With the recent use of CGI in movies,
anything has become possible. The use for practical effects is minimal to nearly non existent
since Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 first showed the wide spectrum of what was possible. It is
increasingly common for films to focus more on the visual effects, than the story of the film itself.
Some notable examples of this are the Transformers series of movies, and Star WarsEpisode I: The
Phantom Menace. In the Transformers series the films focus on the action scenes of CGI robots.
Human characters in this story often take a back seat to their film

The Aspects Of Happiness And Happiness
Happiness is not always easy to achieve. Life throws curve balls and it s hard to swing at all of
them. I try to stay happy all the time or I fake it. I don t want ruin other people s happiness by
being upset. I am blessed to say I have a happy life but there is plenty of ways I could increase my
own happiness. Sleeping more than I do right now would increase my happiness. Doing more for
others and spreading kindness is another way I could have a happier life. Lastly, planning
events or activities beforehand would not only make me happier but also less stressed. I would
love to be happier, but I need to be committed to make changes in my life. Sleep is a great thing
and I wish I could do it more often. I ve never been a good sleeper. My parents think it s because
of my phone, but I put it up when I want to sleep and I end up staring at the ceiling for an hour or
two. According to Lemola et al. (as cited in Boehm and Kubzansky, 2012), there was a study
involving children and, .... those who were the most optimistic slept a sufficient amount each
night and took less time to fall asleep (2010). For me to sleep more and be happier, I need to have a
positive outlook on life. I always try to see the brighter side of situations but sometimes, I find it
immensely hard to be positive when other people are pessimistic. I need to push myself and be the
better person. If being more optimistic will help me sleep more, I will gladly be positive in every
situation so I will be

Studded Tires Research Paper
You know when studded tire season rolls around in Oregon. Traffic goes from light engine noises,
to a constant rattle that sounds like everyone in town just got married and are dragging an 18
pack of PBR behind their cars. But the reality is, there are few days in a typical Central Oregon
winter where studded tiresare beneficial. For the remaining time that snow tires are mandatory, we
are creating roadsafety issues that last the rest of the year. There s a new appeal in Oregon to
precisely decide the amount of asphalt damage afforded by studs and if previous safety advantages
exceed yearly highway deterioration. Studs were commissioned in Oregon in 1967. In just a couple
years, extreme pavement deterioration became evident. Alaska Department of Transportation and
Public Facilities(ADOT PF) calculates road deterioration from studs in Alaska to be five million
yearly. While the Oregon Department of Transportation(ODOT) calculates damage to be twenty
four million on the state highways and eighteen million on rural streets, for a total of forty two

While they may be ill educated on the facts of studded tires, they might also be correct. It is
important to know the other factors that play into ruts, potholes, and cracks in the highways and
county roads. These common Central Oregon sights could be caused by heavy vehicles, sunlight,
or even roads not being able to hold the volume of traffic. Many roads in Bend, OR have a layer of
just a couple inches of pavement, when the volume would require half a foot of asphalt. Scott
Hammers, a journalist from The Bulletin who specializes on issues in Central Oregon, states that,
Hardy Hanson, Bend s streets manager, said the city s insufficient maintenance budget has made it
difficult to stay on top of emerging problems. A combination of all these do cause road damage,

Major Organs Involved In The Digestive System
The Digestive system plays an important role in the function of the human body. The digestive
system converts food to energy your body needs to complete everyday activities. The digestive
system also takes the waste in your body and eliminates waste. Major organs included in the process
of the digestive system include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The mouth is
where the process begins. Saliva is added to the food that you chew, which makes it able to travel
down the esophagus.
The esophagus connects the mouth to the stomach, where the process continues. The stomach
holds food while it is being mixed with enzymes. The small intestines release nutrients from the
broken down food. These nutrients fuel the body and make it

countryside, they were gradually rising until they fund the bank that was called the Medici Bank.

their rivals you have probably done the same, and after they did that they just became even more

people and also the renaissance. The Medicis Family also had a lot of connections to popes,
lords and kings, so that made them even more powerful and harder for anyone who would try to
stop them and The Medicis patronized a lot of artists which helped art to become such a big thing
during the renaissance, because of them people started to pay attention to the art and if that hadn t

Analysis Of Judith Slaying Holofernes
Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi ultimately painted one of the most violent
representations of Judith in the history of art (Straussman Pflanzer, 12). Gentileschi was the only
woman painter of the Baroque period in her time. She was born in Rome in 1593 to Orazio
Gentileschi and Prudenzia Montoni. Artemisia was a follower of Caravaggio, whom art is
frequently considered primarily in terms of its naturalism (Straussman Pflanzer, 13). She also
learned the principles of art from her father and the basic perspective from Tassi.
In Judith Slaying Holofernes the woman represented in a yellow costly garment is no other than
Judith a Jewish widow. Despite her beauty for deceiving men, she is very brutal in revenge. By
easily gaining her way through the Assyrians she gracefully grabs the attention of the General
Holofernes, and then kills him by slicing through his neck with his own sword. She is then the
heroine figure for Bethulia, Jerusalem, the Temple, and the people (Judith 8:11 12).
The story of Judith is told to be a young religious widow from the Jewish city of Bethulia, chops
off the head of Holofernes, general of the Assyrian army that had attacked her city. Robin Gallaher
Branch states that Judith told the Bethulia leaders to meet her at her home where she could discuss
to them her plan on how to save the city from thirst by the enemy (Branch, 1). After getting the
approval from her city leaders they acclaim her for her wisdom and released her and

One of the ways in which he does this is in the means that he rejects insincerity, but instead
practices what he preaches: Atticus is the same in his house as he is on the public streets (51). In a
time period and a town that endorses hypocrisy, Atticus stands for truth, and teaches others by his
example that it is possible for them to do the same. With typical Maycomb influences such as Aunt
Alexandra surrounding Jem and Scout, Atticus s constant genuineness in public and private
presents an essential example if honesty for his children to follow.
Once again, Atticus provides an exemplary example of humbleness in the modest manner of which
he shot the stray dog. Despite having a commendable shooting talent, Atticus chose to keep this
hidden, and was not eager to call attention to it. While Scout does not understand why, Atticus s
line of reasoning is clear to Jem, who now aspires to be a humble and modest gentleman such as his
father.
Atticus educates his children in standing up for what they believe in, and influences Jem and
Scout to mature with a strong sense of justice and equality. By accepting Tom Robinson s case,
Atticus provides a clear example of standing up for one s beliefs a model which his children can
observe and follow. As Atticus was a firm believer in justice and equality for all men, he rightfully
provided Tom Robinson with a chance of a fair trial. He believed that Tom was innocent, but was

The Nuclear Reactors At Chernobyl
Abstract The disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 is one that should not be forgotten due to its heavy
impacts on society not just locally, but also globally. The incident serves as a perfect example of the
importance of engineers and the government acting ethically. From the start, the engineers
designing the nuclear reactors at Chernobyl failed to act with integrity by not concerning
themselves with the health or welfare of the local community. Their lack of safety systems that
were common place in other reactors across the world inevitably caused the death of thousands of
people in the former USSR. Additionally, certain design errors committed by the engineers left the
reactor unstable during simple, frequent tests and experiments. The USSR... Show more content on

All these mistakes eventually led to the unnecessary loss of civilian lives in the local area in
addition to massive amounts of radiation being released into the environment and atmosphere.
I.INTRODUCTION
Engineering ethical disasters occur when engineers overlook the guidelines given to them and
make mistakes. Engineers are the people who design everything from cars to the space shuttles,
and failures can not only take lives, but also have huge political and economic impacts lasting
decades. An example of this is the Chernobyl disaster. This happened because of mistakes that
could have been avoided if the engineers had acted ethically. Chernobyl had a terrible impact on
the surrounding area and created deep seeded fear in both people that were affected and people
that watched from afar. Chernobyl is considered an ethical disaster because of the deceptiveness
of the USSR government, the engineer s inability to keep the public s safety as a number one
priority, and because some of the engineers were acting outside of their areas of expertise.
II.OVERVIEW
The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26th, 1986 in the southwestern Soviet Union in modern
day Ukraine. Chernobyl was a town that the USSR chose as a site to build a nuclear power plant
containing four operating RBMK reactors. These particular Soviet designed reactors were natural
uranium fueled, water cooled, and graphite moderated [1]. Engineers at

The Moral Status Of A Virtual Avatar
The moral status of a virtual Avatar, is a refection of a person s choice, such as that someone s
choices are a representation of how one may react to certain types of online attacks. Virtual rape is
a type of attack that when one avatar gets involved in non consensual sexual behaviors with
another. Obviously not the same as physical rape, virtual rape also harms the person to some
extent. The traumatic experiences avatars experience is valued because morally there is still a
problem with the person controlling the avatar. What is going on online is that hate speech is
occurring as sexual harassment, which explains the immorality of virtual rape. There are many
ways people view the harm virtual rape causes, such as that critics say people can just ignore the
hate speech. Others say that it is still equal harassment in the virtual world, linked to hate speech.

The Universal Truth In Faust By Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Wolfgang von Goethe was a German writer and polymath back in the 1800s. Goethe is considered
the supreme genius of modern German literature. Although he was alive so long ago, the ideas he
put out there are still pertinent to the modern world. Goethe s quote is a universal truth and his
philosophy is even proven. Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back,
always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth,
the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans that the moment one definitely
commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help that would never
have otherwise occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision... Show more content

The poem has many different aspects that can be analyzed in interpreted. These different aspects
of Faust emphasize the greater nature of good versus evil. These aspects include the time period
of what Goethe set the play and the time he wrote the play, the setting gives a greater portrait of
the conflicts that arise, and the plot gives the enhancement of right and wrong. The characters, for
instance, has the natural antagonist, the Devil (qtd. In Bierhorst, 2010). In different religions, the
Devil has many different names, such as Lucifer, Satan, The Wicked One, or The Arch Fiend.
Due to Goethe s natural culture as a German, he naturally names the Devil as Mephistopheles, or
in short, Mephisto. Mephisto is the antagonist in the poem because he tries to move Faust in the
direction of evil and temptation. As the antagonist, he eventually is defeated by an element he is
unaware of, love. Mephisto creates his own doom, by presenting Faust a woman that he will
eventually love. Mephisto tried to tempt Faust into lust because he wanted Faust to surrender his
soul to him. So in order for Mephisto to succeed in his goals, he was supposed to meet all of Faust
s desires. Unfortunately, the one desire Faust wanted, backfires on Mephisto s plan. The next
character in Faust is Faust himself. He is naturally the protagonist in the short poem. Faust is a
known physician in his town and learned as many traits as he could. Unfortunately, his human
desire of greed had consumed his mindset. Even though he accomplished all that he wanted, he
eventually turned to evil or magic and made a pact with the devil. In the first act of the poem, he
seems to have the intentions of more of the antagonist; more evil doing rather than

The Evolution Of Monogamy In Mammals
The evolution of monogamy in mammals has been challenging to understand for ecologists for
many years, because in most cases male mammals are thought to have higher fitness through
polygamous mating. One of the principles of evolution is that animals want to maximize their
reproductive success, so two animals committing to one another kind of seems counter intuitive.
Animals want to pass on their genes to the next generation, and having more offspring means there
s a higher chance of survival. When females have long lactation periods or gestation, they are
unable to mate during this time, so it would seem to be advantageous for the maleto move on to
their next mate. In a biology context, monogamyis when one male mates to one femaleforming an
exclusive bond. Research shows that approximately 3 5% of mammals are considered
monogamous compared to about 90% of birds and out of a total of 4,000 mammalian species
(Munshi South). Birds seem to be extremely monogamous because both male and female birds
actively participate in the growth of their hatchlings. The equitable division of the labor gives the
male bird more of a reason to stick around (Munshi South).
Although most mammals are not monogamous why do some of them exhibit this behavior? We
could address this question by looking at different examples of monogamous mammals and what
genetic and environmental factors could have influenced this behavior. We can also look at what
hormones could be involved in pair bonding

Victory Speech Ethos
Persuasion is a very strong technique that is used by many throughout history to form some of
the greatest works of literature. Ethos, pathos, and logos are the three forms of persuasion. In
2008 a man by the name of Barack Obama created his Victory Speech after a very hard fought
campaign. He utilizes the three modes of persuasion to create his very persuasive speech.
Persuasion is one of the most crucial strengths to any speaker, especially when applying ethos,
pathos, and logos just as Barack Obama did in his 2008 Victory Speech. What are ethos, pathos,

answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white,

immense change in America from the Montgomery bus boycott to the renowned Martin Luther
King Jr. speech. Living at 106 she remembered when there was no cars on the street and no
advanced technology to now voting for her favored candidate with a touch screen tablet. He
really stressed how much change had happened throughout America s past touching upon very
key people, events, as well as just the overall American Dream creating these feel good moments.
President Barack Obama used ethos, pathos, and logos in an amazing collateral piece. The three
types of persuasion are all relevant in Obama s Victory speech. To start off with ethos, Obama
(2008) states that to those he has not yet won their vote, he needs to hear their voices as well
because he will become their president too. This statement uses the authoritative position as a
president, the most faithful person in government to allow the audience to believe what he is
saying. Ann Nixon the women mentioned later on in the speech is yet another way he used ethos.

school through all four years of college. I hope to have a substantial foundation of knowledge and
experiences from the classroom that will transition over into my future career. Before my
professional career begins, I will work hard to attain my CPA by retaining my classroom education.
Furthermore, the enhanced knowledge I will gain from a Master of Accounting from IowaState will
better my chances at achieving my goal of passing the CPA exam.
My career goals include working at a public accounting firm to gain experience of the field while
working towards receiving my CPA. After a few years, I wantto work my way up in the company
and eventually become a partner. Or, if I decide to go private working for a company, I would
like to become a CFO. Whichever path I choose, the most important consideration for me as I
start my professional career is not a specific job title in accounting, but rather the chance to work
for a company that promotes a positive work culture and provides an opportunity for professional
growth. In addition, I want to wish to work for a company that shares much of the same values as
me and is enjoyable to work for.
A Master of Accounting degree from Iowa State Universitywould greatly expand my intelligence in
the accounting field, and learn higher level concepts that

The Schutz Marke Wall Clock
A treasured time piece in transition to family heirloom. The Schutz Marke Wall Clock is a unique
blend of art and furniture and is characteristic of the German craftsmanship of the 19th century
and stopped production after 1932. Ironically, Louise Pearson (my great grandmother) purchased
this clock in 1932. The picturesque style of this brand of clocks makes it a centerpiece in the
home, as many have them hanging in their home to this day. Regulator clocks, sometimes referred
to as pendulum clocks, were invented in the late 18th century in a quest for greater timekeeping
accuracy (. This is a culturally symbolic timepiece and its character is more enhanced as it is no
longer crafted by Schutz Marke. Many have the clocks hanging on their walls, even without that
special meaning they hold for some. My grandmother perceives this as both functional and symbolic
of her relationship with her mother and the meaning it held for her, and that is why she has one.
The intricate details along the sides and in the hands themselves is amazing. There are many types
of clocks made and manufactured but the Antique Schutz Marke German Vienna wall clockis a
classic a strikingly magnificent work of art. The importance of this artifact is that the details tell
the craftmaker s story from the time period it was created. Its craftsmanship is just one aspect of its
significance, as this time piece brings that connection from past, present, and future for a family.
The particular clock

Grignard Lab
A Grignard Like Organic Reaction
The Synthesis of 1 phenyl 3 buten 1 ol
Introduction
The Grignard reaction is an important synthetic process by which a new carbon to carbon bond is
formed. Magnesium metal is first reacted with an organic halide forming the Grignard reagent. The
Grignard reaction is the addition of an organomagnesium halide (Grignard reagent) to a ketone or
aldehyde, to form a tertiary or secondary alcohol, respectively. For example, the reaction with
formaldehyde leads to a primary alcohol. Grignard Reagents are also used in the following
important reactions: The addition of an excess of a Grignard reagent to an ester or lactone gives a
tertiary alcohol in which two alkyl groups are the same, and the addition of a ... Show more content

Lofty Diction In The Life Of St Gregory
Opening his narrative of St. Macrina, St. Gregory begins with the justification of why her story is
being told. St. Gregory, St. Macrina s brother, sets out to create an account that is both artless and
simple, but rather, produces a rich, detailed expression of admiration and praise (77). According to
St. Gregory, Macrina was the spiritual leader in their family, using her knowledge of Scripture and
philosophy to motivate her family and others to cast off the illusion of a material life. With a
wealth of knowledge and the ability to persuade others, Macrina rose to the position of Superior.
Saint Gregory, in his work The Life of St. Macrina utilizes lofty diction, tone, and a clear
characterization of Macrina, which enables us to see how through Christianity, women of the
3rd century had the freedom to establish an identity outside of the secular, patriarchal world,
and the respect that identity yielded. St. Gregory s use of lofty diction is apparent when he
describes their mother s character. By using lofty diction such as extremely virtuous,
exceptionally pure, and spotless, it is obvious St. Gregory holds his mother in high esteem, even
though she was not a handmaid for the church like Macrina (77). Moreover, if these are the
words he chooses when describing his mother, we can see why his word choice is also lofty for
Macrina, who held the respected position of Superior later in her life. Nonetheless, due to Macrina
s mother being a model of Christianity,

Anne Sexton Housewife Essay
Anne Sexton s poetry was stark, unrestrained and personal, compared to the traditional. It
captivated her readers with its real, unique sense of style. The poems spoke of intimate, deep
experiences. Anne Sexton s poetry delves into mental illness and death by using imagery, diction
and free verse to convey isolation, depression and the search for identity.
In the poem Housewife, Anne Sexton utilizes the search for identity to delve into her own
personal feelings regarding her role as a wife and mother. She portrays this realization and search
for oneself by using many types of descriptive imagery and diction, lifelong search for identity
shaped her poetry (Crowe 1). The house is brought to life and becomes a human, It s another

Throughout the poem, the death (23 25), is repeatedly used and seen as a goal to be reached in
life whenever you decide to get there. By using those specific words, Sexton goes against the
traditional poets. Sexton and Plath both have a deep love for death and it is a frequently
discussed topic and isn t new to either of them. The word death is also repeated due to Sexton s
obsession with the idea. Death is something she craved and needed more than water, they wrote
about loneliness and alienation, and they spoke plainly about contemplating suicide (Crowe 2).
By examining the words used and Sexton s tone, you can feel her envy towards her friend by
calling her a thief (15). In Sexton s eyes, Plath stole death from her and took the one thing she

Most hospitals, medical practices across the United States are transitioning to electronic health

EHR technology to the full extent of its power because it associates barriers that stand in the way
of changing medical practices. In this case, the EHR will also examine some of the advantages

This system includes the patient s history, their medication and allergies, and the notes that s were

which could put health care organizations at risk and potentially violate privacy protocols. Buying
electronic material will have a high cost in the ambulatory environment, although it could be
extremely effective. Creating and updating patient s medical records would take some pressure
off the doctors and physicians who are not capable of analyzing electronic material on new
devices. In order to secure and record patients effectively, hospitals would need the right equipment.
Hence, it would increase the cost of the hospital expenses. In addition, new EHR ambulatory care
will take time to train people and understand the capability of the software. As you make sure that
the new technology is being used in a system that practitioners have already used. Another cost of
integrating EHR s is the maintenance cost which could be costly. A part of the maintenance costs

The Importance Of Self Confidence
Believing that you that you are unacceptable or unlikable socially can be painful. Lack of self
confidence can make you get afraid to interact socially. When in situations where you will be
observed by others or where you need to speak in front of a crowd or to strangers you might feel
anxious. This might cause you to act awkward. You might avoid eye contact and behave too
cautiously. The idea that you are socially unacceptable might get reinforced to you when you feel
that other people react strangely towards you.
As the result of the challenges you face you might end up avoiding social contact even though
you know being in social places and interacting with others is a big part of any persons life. We
cannot always avoid social situations in living our daily lives. You might get invited to parties
where friends are celebrating or by colleagues at work celebrating their birthdays. It is not always
possible to avoid interacting socially.
So how do you improve social self confidence when you do not have it? Before I tell you how, let
me start by telling a little story about a rat.
When you have a rat in the house that eats up your tomatoes and messes up your fruits. To catch it,
you would need to know how and when and where it operates. You would wantto catch it when the
house is quite with a piece of cheese in the mouse trap or place a rat poison in places where the rat
is likely to hang around.
A similar approach is applicable to improving self confidence. You need to

A Speech On The Police Officer Removed The Chair Of A...
After the police officer removed the handcuffs from the chair and guided the patient back to his
cell, Dr. Wussah turned to me and said:
We are not God nor the Devil. We do not hold the wooden gavel. We cannot work if we do not
have space in this room, our minds, and our heart.
I returned with a smile.
Growing up as the daughter of a lawyer, the image of the wooden gavel has long been a symbol
of authority, judgement, and choice. It represents a path some encouraged me towards and
thought I would follow. During my early childhood, teachers and family members often
commented on my out of the box thinking. I was always reading, an information sponge, and
observing and questioning the world around me. This curious disposition led me to the

Compare Remember And Longfellow
As one of the most frequently used themes, death has been portrayed and understood differently
throughout modern history as well as by poets Christina Rossetti and Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow in Remember and the Cross of Snow. It appears in literature as the preeminent
dilemma, one that is often met by emotions such as grief, hopefulness, depression, and one that
can encompass the entire essence of any writing piece. However, despite Rossetti s Remember and
Longfellow s Cross of Snow employing death as a universal similarity, the tones, narratives, and
syntaxes of the poems help create two entire different images of what the works are about in the
readers minds. At first glance, the theme of death is clearly represented in both Remember ... Show

The speaker in Remember has a calm voice evident in the simplicity in the syntax of the poem
which is easy to understand starting from the first line, but is increasingly uncertain until it turns
commanding. Lines 3 to 8 show the uncertainties of the speaker as they do not know whether or
not they will be able to stay with the person they are writing the poem to (presumably a beloved
someone) or that they will be able to give them advice or pray . Yet, the tone takes on a strong
personality when the speaker says: Better by far you should forget and smile/Than that you
should remember and be sad (line 13 14) by this reassuring the recipient that no matter if the
speaker dies, it is completely fine if they are forgotten and by this giving the poem a much more
lighthearted tone. Unlike Remember, the Cross of Snow is not a mysterious poem, in fact,
Newton Arvin s biography called Longfellow: His Life and Work states that the poem was
actually written to mourn his wife, who died horribly after her dress caught on fire from an
ember in the chimney as the couple rested. Although, Longfellow tried to put the fire out, he did
so unsuccessfully and in the meantime, burning his own face with scars he covered up with his
long beard. Moreover, Longfellow s wife was kept alive four days in hope of curing her, but at
that point no one could help and she died. The poem, therefore, picks up a tone of isolation,
emphasized by the cold atmosphere that the wintery scene

Elizabeth Gaskell s Construction Of The Ideal Man
In Victorian Britain, monumental changes were occurring in regards to class structure and gender
ideals due to social and economic changes sparked by the Industrial Revolution. These changes
caused a new image of masculinity to emerge. The concept of masculinity came to embody a new
ideal, self made man, measured by advances based on personal success rather than birthright(M19).
It was expected that men were to exude manly toughness and independent spirit while providing the
financial support and leadership for the household(m19). Beyond these basic characteristics,
Elizabeth Gaskell s construction of the ideal man incorporates a fusion of gendertraits as strengths
of masculinity, notably her emphasis on manly nurturance and tenderness as seen in her novel
Mary Barton(wcm334). While the evolving social structure of 19th century Britain was a cause for
the increasing emphasis on manliness, it was also the source of challenges faced by working class
men as they struggled to achieve and maintain this new sense of masculinity. By analyzing Gaskell
s Mary Barton and additional texts from the period, supplemented by contemporary analysis of the
concept of masculinity, this paper provides insight into the constructions of masculinity in working
class men of Victorian society and discusses the struggles workers faced as they strove to achieve
manhood amidst the changing social climate.
In order to understand the difficulty working class men encountered trying to maintain a

Comedy in Don Quixote
Q.2 Wherein lies the comedy in part one of Don Quixote?
The story Don Quixote is a burlesque, mock epic of the romances of chivalry, in which Cervantes
teaches the reader the truth by creating laughter that ridicules. Through the protagonist, he succeeds
in satirizing Spain s obsession with the noble knights as being absurdly old fashioned. The
dynamics of the comedy in this story are simple, Don Quixote believes the romances he has read
and strives to live them out, and it is his actions and the situations that he finds himself in during his
adventures that make the reader laugh. We can define comedy as something that entertains the
reader and that makes us want to laugh out loud and Cervantes succeeds in doing this through his
use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, most of the situations that Don Quixote is placed in during his ridiculous quest
are excellent examples of slapstick comedy. The reader is highly entertained by Don Quixote on
his adventures during which he implicitly believes that he is like the knights in the novels he has
read and so; he logically believes his own fiction. The reader is embarrassed when Don Quixote
decides that by choosing a new name for himself, his horse, his lady and his friends that this will
suffice in making him a knight. Just like he shaped his own appearance, he chooses his name as
Don Quixote de La Mancha and this becomes one of the most prominent jokes of the book. It is
a name that is undignified and pretentious but simultaneously amusing because La Mancha is a
dry, sparsely populated region of Spain, which is exactly what a knight should avoid. The suffix
ote was considered derogatory at that time and it is even funny sounding. We are skeptical from
the very beginning as to whether or not Don Quixote is worthy of the title Don and our suspicions
are confirmed when he fails to assist people in distress like any good knight should. It is highly
entertaining when AndrГ©s specifically asks Don Quixote not to complicate his life with any more

Influence Of Popular Culture In The 1960s
Australian popular culture in the 1960s had multiple features, many of which were influenced by
the social changes and counter culture at the time. The primary aspects of Australian popular
culture in the 1960s were; music, fashion, film, sport and television. In Australia, the fashion of
the 1960s emulated the political and cultural changes at the time. This fashion revolution was
youth driven and showed their rejection of social standards. For women, the mini skirt came into
trend, introduced by fashion icon Twiggy (Leslie Hornby). This above the knee skirt came into
fashion in a revolt against people telling women how to express themselves and their bodies that
came with the womens rights movement and the introduction of the pill. Men wore tunics, capes
and more feminine clothing as pants became tighter and they dawned silk scarfs. This shift from
masculine clothing to dabbling in the side of feminine, was because of the changing idea of
gender and sexuality. Men also tried to recreate the look of the Beatles; in sharp and clean suits
due the bands popularity at the time. Nearing the end of the 1960s, hippie fashion came into style.
This era of fashion was dominated by bright, swirling colours, tie dye, paisley prints, loose fitting
clothing, flowers, peace signs, etc. This change in fashion was in response to the Vietnam war.
People wore their clothes as a political statement, showing their embracement towards love and
freedom. 1960s music in Australia was heavily

The Milling Machine And Drilling
In order to use the milling machine to manufacture a 2 in base by ВЅ in height by Вѕ in depth

measuring the piece in every procedure. From the beginning, when we cut our piece from the steel
bar using the Band Saw machine. In the end when we drilled four different sizes of holes in the
piece using two different techniques; drillingusing the milling machineand drilling by hand. Before
we started machining, we were instructed in how to perform measurements using calipers and
micrometers, but we mainly use micrometers during the procedure. Then, after a clear explanation
of the procedure, measurements and machine uses we performed our first cut using the Band Saw
by cutting a small piece from it. The edges of the steel piece weren t smooth so we machine it
using the Milling machine, just one side. In order to get the requirement dimensions we set the
machine in Low speed because it is better for rough cuts, high speed for small cuts.
The initial height was .680 in so two rough cuts were performed one of .100 in and a second of
.060 in both around 80 MPH. A third cut was necessary to get the proper height, which was only
.020 in; it was a simple cut so it was necessary a high speed that was around 200. After this, the
height was finally ВЅ in.
Now, we needed to get the correct width. It was required to be .750 in. The piece was .958 in, so it

Old Man and the Sea Concludes with Santiagos Death Essay
Old Man and the Sea Essay It is believable that Santiago is dead at the end of The Old Man and
the Sea. This conclusion can be deduced from the various hints Hemingway used throughout the
novel. The foreshadowing of Santiago s death, his comparison to Christ, and his bad luck helps one
decipher that the deathof the old man took place at the end of the book. First, something that leads
the reader to believe that Santiago is dead at the end of the book is foreshadowing. One event that
foreshadowed Santiago s death was the death of the marlin. The fish and the old man displayed
similar qualities of strength, bravery and determination. For instance, the old man surpassed his
natural limits by staying far out at sea, while the fish... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When describing the man he said the old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back
of his neck (9) . This depicts how old Santiago really was and how close he was to the end of his
life. Hemingway also described the flag on his sail as looking like the flag of permanent defeat
(9) . This quote foreshadows Santiago s eventual death which was caused by going out at sea
past his ordinary limits. Another component that stood out in the novel to make Santiago s death
appear evident was his image as a Christ figure. There were multiple times in the book that
Hemingway compared Santiago to Christ. For example, when Santiago returns to shore, he
shouldered the mast and started to climb (121) . This is similar to when Christ carried the cross
bar on his shoulders up to Calvery. Santiago fell three times on his way back to his hut, as did
Christ. Hemingway s comparison of Santiago to Christ implies that Santiago will die just like
Christ did.
In addition, Santiago s death may have been due to the fact that he was a very unlucky man. At
the very beginning of the book Santiago is described by his fellow fishermen as a salao, which is
the worst form of unlucky (9) . Meanwhile, by the conclusion of the book his unluckiness is vastly
exposed. The marlin is attacked by sharks, and then attacked again to the point of obliteration.
Santiago also loses his knife to the sharks and falls three times on the way

The Effects Of Media On The Media Influences Viewers
Racial Bias in the Media Influences Viewers
Television reaches more consumers for more time than any other source of media. Its use for
entertainment or news is overly influential, persuasive, and authoritative. Through these
characteristics, any type of information or message influences its massive audience. Because of
this, what Americans see or fail to see has a powerful impact on how they view other races.
Young children are especially vulnerable to the information they are exposed to. TV is a vehicle
to provide experiences and information not otherwise available to them. Older audiences,
however, are also vulnerable to the information. Consistent messages about traits and stereotypes
of other races reinforce specific ideas to the adult viewer. Viewers aren t limited to racial bias
when other races are on the screen, but are also susceptible when races aren t included. As a strong
and influential tool, television uses both obvious and subtle racial bias to influence its viewers.
Television is a strong and influential tool. To first understand why television has a strong
influence on its viewer s, it is important to know some basic facts. According to Nielsen s
National Television Household Universe Estimates, there are 116.4 million TV homes in the U.S.
prior to the start of the 2014 15 TV season. The number of persons age 2 and older in U.S. TV
Households is estimated to be 296 million (Nielsen, 2014). This stat shows the enormous audience

Smooth Muscle Contraction
Smooth muscle cells of the ileum spontaneously contract due to the presence of pacemaker cells,
called Cajal cells (Widmaier et al., 2014d). However, these smooth muscle they are also innervated
by autonomic nerves, which can be stimulated to change contraction rates by stimulating. Figure 1,
shows the effect of nerve stimulation of 17volts on isolated ileum tissue. Stimulating sympathetic
(sympathetic nerves was stimulated for this particular tissue), causes release of noradrenaline,
which inhabits contraction of smooth musclecells. Furthermore, according to table 1, there is a
58.83% change in contraction amplitude. It can be extrapolated that fewer smooth muscles are
contracting. At lower voltages, a weaker response was observed, as voltage is increased a stronger
response was observed. Increasing the voltage, means more neurons are being recruited (Widmaier
et al., 2014b). In this particular experiment, stimulation of nerves around the mesenteric artery
caused an inhibitory response, therefore at higher voltages, more smooth muscles are being
inhibited.
The frequency was set to 20Hz. Interstitial cells of Cajal, are responsible for spontaneous
contraction of smooth muscle cells in the gastrointestinal tract (Widmaier et al., 2014d). Once ...

The And Of The Renaissance
When describing Giuseppe Arcimboldo s artwork, scholars consistently use one term: bizarre.
Indeed, among his most famous paintings are that which feature human faces composed out of
food, animals, and household objects. Modern viewers have viewed these composite paintings
amusingly. However, there is more depth and context to Arcimboldo s art than simply to serve as
forms of entertainment. Research suggests Arcimboldo masked social critiques and political
messages in his paintings, which were reflective of the ongoing intellectual currents of the
Renaissance. As best put by Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Arcimboldo s paintings can be seen not
as bizarre fancies, but as the expression of the complicated intellectual world of the late sixteenth
century (Elhard 117). Therefore, this paper will examine Arcimboldo s background as an artist,
analyses of his composite paintings, and the relationship his artwork had to Renaissance
scholarship. Arcimboldo was an Italian artist who worked in the courts of emperors Ferdinand I,
Maximilian II, and Rudolf IIduring the sixteenth century, the period of the Renaissance. During his
employment, Arcimboldo produced and designed tapestries, stained glass windows, festival
staging, and costumes. However, he is most famous for his avant garde paintings of composite
heads. These paintings were comprised of objects fruit, vegetables, books, etc. associated with the
allegorical meanings of the subjects (Elhard 116). The inspiration behind these

In turn, he uses this justification to senselessly beat a man up for simply not liking him. This could
be supported by a quote from an article about the study of free will vs determinism, which states,
freedom to choose fits comfortably with the assumption that people deserve what they get
(Carey 133). Alex could agree that someone of his own violent nature deserves this moment, or
that the man deserved the beating. However, in a critical essay by Rubin Rabinovitz, it is argued
that this expression of do what you want attitude is just as mechanically determined. By
dictating a lifestyle based around this preconceived mentality, Alex is already subjecting himself

  • 2. Calcium Carbonate Formation Sam Wylie Karly Kindoll Winter Dean CHE 111 028 9/25/17 Finding the Composition of Limestone Intro: Limestone is made from loose marine sediment (such as shells) that form into rock, but can also come from dissolved calcium carbonate. When an acid is added to limestone it releases carbon dioxide. This happens in a two step process. Step 1: CaCO3(s) 2HCl(aq) в†’ CaCl2(aq) H2CO3(aq) Step 2: H2CO3(aq) в†’ CO2(g) H2O(l) The next reaction used is CaCl2(aq) (NH4)2SO4(aq) в†’ CaSO4(s) 2NH4Cl(aq). This is quantifying the calcium carbonate by finding out the amount calcium ion is present. Mass Percent Composition is trying to find the amount present of a specific component in a sample. • 3. Rodney King Research Paper On March 3, 1991 an African American man named Rodney King became a posterboy for racial tension and police brutality in America. On this day, police officers Stacey C. Koon, Laurence M. Powell, Timothy E. Wind, and Theodore J. Briseno attempted to pull Rodney King over because they suspected he was driving under the influence. Mr. King then lead the officers on a 110 mph chase through San Fernando Valley, California, and finally stopped his car in a residential area. Police officers began beating Mr. King after he got out of his car. Officers tasered, kicked, stomped on, and hit Mr. King with their batons for about 10 minutes. THe whole police encounter was filmed by a nearby resident named George Holliday. After the police were put on trial,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Judge John G. Davies, who handled the case, did not try to hide his sympathy for the defendants. Davies excluded evidence of racist comments made by the officers from the trial record. He also made several statements, saying that he too believed the incident....would not have occurred at all, but for Mr. King s initial misconduct. Davies elaborated on his beliefs when he stated, Mr. King, a paroled felon, who had fled from police and resisted arrest, bore much of the responsibility for the beating. Judge Davies obviously had sided with the officers, describing them as having distinguished records of public service even though he knew that each man had been involved in at least one prior criminal incident. He made his loyalties even more evident when he said Mr. King had no serious injuries . He was only hit in the head or the face once, possibly inadvertently. King s facial injuries included a broken cheekbone, a broken orbit (eye socket), and 11 skull fractures. When making an appearance on L.A. Burning: 25 Years Later Rodney King s attorney, Steve Lerman, told interviewers that the injuries of Rodney King s skull caused massive brain damage. In addition, the trial itself was moved from Los Angeles to Simi Valley, in Ventura County California. At that time, Ventura County was a predominantly white ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Norman, The Conqueror And The Norman Army Norman success in late 11th century England The tactics used by William the Conqueror and the Norman army, militarily, administratively, and culturally, impacted their success in imposing their power within the English kingdom. These tactics worked in tandem, increasing the success of each of their objectives. The military force used by the Normans was useful in gaining and later maintaining territories for the crown, the administration allowed William the Conqueror s reign to act in a more effective manner under him in the early days of his rule, and the cultural and religious structures allowed the Normans to integrate the already closely tied Norman and English societies. Arguably the most important factor in the exertion of power over the English was the ability by the Normans to act militarily. The warlike attitude of the Normans, combined with the religious aspects that will be discussed later, provided them with a ready and capable army with which to support William s claim to the throne. The early years of William s rule, after the 1066 defeat of Harold, emerged as a sort of military occupation within England by the Normans. These years were crucial in the Norman advance within England. When William came to England he arrived with a large support of military men and much of these supporting military men remained in England because of their military duties. Today s general film going audience quickly becomes bored and seeks more stimulation from the movies. Computer generated images or CGI has been a chief method to keep modern audiences entertained, while being cost effective to practical effects. With the recent use of CGI in movies, anything has become possible. The use for practical effects is minimal to nearly non existent since Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 first showed the wide spectrum of what was possible. It is increasingly common for films to focus more on the visual effects, than the story of the film itself. Some notable examples of this are the Transformers series of movies, and Star WarsEpisode I: The Phantom Menace. In the Transformers series the films focus on the action scenes of CGI robots. Human characters in this story often take a back seat to their film ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Studded Tires Research Paper You know when studded tire season rolls around in Oregon. Traffic goes from light engine noises, to a constant rattle that sounds like everyone in town just got married and are dragging an 18 pack of PBR behind their cars. But the reality is, there are few days in a typical Central Oregon winter where studded tiresare beneficial. For the remaining time that snow tires are mandatory, we are creating roadsafety issues that last the rest of the year. There s a new appeal in Oregon to precisely decide the amount of asphalt damage afforded by studs and if previous safety advantages exceed yearly highway deterioration. Studs were commissioned in Oregon in 1967. In just a couple years, extreme pavement deterioration became evident. Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities(ADOT PF) calculates road deterioration from studs in Alaska to be five million yearly. • 12. Analysis Of Judith Slaying Holofernes Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi ultimately painted one of the most violent representations of Judith in the history of art (Straussman Pflanzer, 12). Gentileschi was the only woman painter of the Baroque period in her time. She was born in Rome in 1593 to Orazio Gentileschi and Prudenzia Montoni. Artemisia was a follower of Caravaggio, whom art is frequently considered primarily in terms of its naturalism (Straussman Pflanzer, 13). She also learned the principles of art from her father and the basic perspective from Tassi. In Judith Slaying Holofernes the woman represented in a yellow costly garment is no other than Judith a Jewish widow. Despite her beauty for deceiving men, she is very brutal in revenge. By easily gaining her way through the Assyrians she gracefully grabs the attention of the General Holofernes, and then kills him by slicing through his neck with his own sword. She is then the heroine figure for Bethulia, Jerusalem, the Temple, and the people (Judith 8:11 12). The story of Judith is told to be a young religious widow from the Jewish city of Bethulia, chops off the head of Holofernes, general of the Assyrian army that had attacked her city. Robin Gallaher Branch states that Judith told the Bethulia leaders to meet her at her home where she could discuss to them her plan on how to save the city from thirst by the enemy (Branch, 1). With typical Maycomb influences such as Aunt Alexandra surrounding Jem and Scout, Atticus s constant genuineness in public and private presents an essential example if honesty for his children to follow. By accepting Tom Robinson s case, Atticus provides a clear example of standing up for one s beliefs a model which his children can observe and follow. The incident serves as a perfect example of the importance of engineers and the government acting ethically. From the start, the engineers designing the nuclear reactors at Chernobyl failed to act with integrity by not concerning themselves with the health or welfare of the local community. Their lack of safety systems that were common place in other reactors across the world inevitably caused the death of thousands of people in the former USSR. All these mistakes eventually led to the unnecessary loss of civilian lives in the local area in addition to massive amounts of radiation being released into the environment and atmosphere. I.INTRODUCTION Engineering ethical disasters occur when engineers overlook the guidelines given to them and make mistakes. Engineers are the people who design everything from cars to the space shuttles, and failures can not only take lives, but also have huge political and economic impacts lasting decades. An example of this is the Chernobyl disaster. This happened because of mistakes that could have been avoided if the engineers had acted ethically. Chernobyl had a terrible impact on the surrounding area and created deep seeded fear in both people that were affected and people that watched from afar. Chernobyl is considered an ethical disaster because of the deceptiveness of the USSR government, the engineer s inability to keep the public s safety as a number one priority, and because some of the engineers were acting outside of their areas of expertise. II.OVERVIEW The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26th, 1986 in the southwestern Soviet Union in modern day Ukraine. Goethe is considered the supreme genius of modern German literature. Although he was alive so long ago, the ideas he put out there are still pertinent to the modern world. Goethe s quote is a universal truth and his philosophy is even proven. Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. The poem has many different aspects that can be analyzed in interpreted. These different aspects of Faust emphasize the greater nature of good versus evil. These aspects include the time period of what Goethe set the play and the time he wrote the play, the setting gives a greater portrait of the conflicts that arise, and the plot gives the enhancement of right and wrong. The characters, for instance, has the natural antagonist, the Devil (qtd. In Bierhorst, 2010). In different religions, the Devil has many different names, such as Lucifer, Satan, The Wicked One, or The Arch Fiend. Due to Goethe s natural culture as a German, he naturally names the Devil as Mephistopheles, or in short, Mephisto. Mephisto is the antagonist in the poem because he tries to move Faust in the direction of evil and temptation. As the antagonist, he eventually is defeated by an element he is unaware of, love. Mephisto creates his own doom, by presenting Faust a woman that he will eventually love. Mephisto tried to tempt Faust into lust because he wanted Faust to surrender his soul to him. So in order for Mephisto to succeed in his goals, he was supposed to meet all of Faust s desires. Unfortunately, the one desire Faust wanted, backfires on Mephisto s plan. The next character in Faust is Faust himself. He is naturally the protagonist in the short poem. Faust is a known physician in his town and learned as many traits as he could. Unfortunately, his human desire of greed had consumed his mindset. Even though he accomplished all that he wanted, he eventually turned to evil or magic and made a pact with the devil. • 18. The Evolution Of Monogamy In Mammals The evolution of monogamy in mammals has been challenging to understand for ecologists for many years, because in most cases male mammals are thought to have higher fitness through polygamous mating. One of the principles of evolution is that animals want to maximize their reproductive success, so two animals committing to one another kind of seems counter intuitive. Animals want to pass on their genes to the next generation, and having more offspring means there s a higher chance of survival. When females have long lactation periods or gestation, they are unable to mate during this time, so it would seem to be advantageous for the maleto move on to their next mate. In a biology context, monogamyis when one male mates to one femaleforming an exclusive bond. Research shows that approximately 3 5% of mammals are considered monogamous compared to about 90% of birds and out of a total of 4,000 mammalian species (Munshi South). Birds seem to be extremely monogamous because both male and female birds actively participate in the growth of their hatchlings. The equitable division of the labor gives the male bird more of a reason to stick around (Munshi South). Although most mammals are not monogamous why do some of them exhibit this behavior? We could address this question by looking at different examples of monogamous mammals and what genetic and environmental factors could have influenced this behavior. We can also look at what hormones could be involved in pair bonding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Lofty Diction In The Life Of St Gregory Opening his narrative of St. Macrina, St. Gregory begins with the justification of why her story is being told. St. Gregory, St. Macrina s brother, sets out to create an account that is both artless and simple, but rather, produces a rich, detailed expression of admiration and praise (77). According to St. Gregory, Macrina was the spiritual leader in their family, using her knowledge of Scripture and philosophy to motivate her family and others to cast off the illusion of a material life. With a wealth of knowledge and the ability to persuade others, Macrina rose to the position of Superior. Saint Gregory, in his work The Life of St. Macrina utilizes lofty diction, tone, and a clear characterization of Macrina, which enables us to see how through Christianity, women of the 3rd century had the freedom to establish an identity outside of the secular, patriarchal world, and the respect that identity yielded. St. Gregory s use of lofty diction is apparent when he describes their mother s character. By using lofty diction such as extremely virtuous, exceptionally pure, and spotless, it is obvious St. Gregory holds his mother in high esteem, even though she was not a handmaid for the church like Macrina (77). Moreover, if these are the words he chooses when describing his mother, we can see why his word choice is also lofty for Macrina, who held the respected position of Superior later in her life. Nonetheless, due to Macrina s mother being a model of Christianity, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When in situations where you will be observed by others or where you need to speak in front of a crowd or to strangers you might feel anxious. This might cause you to act awkward. You might avoid eye contact and behave too cautiously. The idea that you are socially unacceptable might get reinforced to you when you feel that other people react strangely towards you. We cannot always avoid social situations in living our daily lives. You might get invited to parties where friends are celebrating or by colleagues at work celebrating their birthdays. It is not always possible to avoid interacting socially. So how do you improve social self confidence when you do not have it? The speaker in Remember has a calm voice evident in the simplicity in the syntax of the poem which is easy to understand starting from the first line, but is increasingly uncertain until it turns commanding. Lines 3 to 8 show the uncertainties of the speaker as they do not know whether or not they will be able to stay with the person they are writing the poem to (presumably a beloved someone) or that they will be able to give them advice or pray . Yet, the tone takes on a strong personality when the speaker says: Better by far you should forget and smile/Than that you should remember and be sad (line 13 14) by this reassuring the recipient that no matter if the speaker dies, it is completely fine if they are forgotten and by this giving the poem a much more lighthearted tone. Unlike Remember, the Cross of Snow is not a mysterious poem, in fact, Newton Arvin s biography called Longfellow: His Life and Work states that the poem was actually written to mourn his wife, who died horribly after her dress caught on fire from an ember in the chimney as the couple rested. Although, Longfellow tried to put the fire out, he did so unsuccessfully and in the meantime, burning his own face with scars he covered up with his long beard. • 40. Elizabeth Gaskell s Construction Of The Ideal Man In Victorian Britain, monumental changes were occurring in regards to class structure and gender ideals due to social and economic changes sparked by the Industrial Revolution. These changes caused a new image of masculinity to emerge. The concept of masculinity came to embody a new ideal, self made man, measured by advances based on personal success rather than birthright(M19). It was expected that men were to exude manly toughness and independent spirit while providing the financial support and leadership for the household(m19). Beyond these basic characteristics, Elizabeth Gaskell s construction of the ideal man incorporates a fusion of gendertraits as strengths of masculinity, notably her emphasis on manly nurturance and tenderness as seen in her novel Mary Barton(wcm334). While the evolving social structure of 19th century Britain was a cause for the increasing emphasis on manliness, it was also the source of challenges faced by working class men as they struggled to achieve and maintain this new sense of masculinity. By analyzing Gaskell s Mary Barton and additional texts from the period, supplemented by contemporary analysis of the concept of masculinity, this paper provides insight into the constructions of masculinity in working class men of Victorian society and discusses the struggles workers faced as they strove to achieve manhood amidst the changing social climate. The story Don Quixote is a burlesque, mock epic of the romances of chivalry, in which Cervantes teaches the reader the truth by creating laughter that ridicules. The dynamics of the comedy in this story are simple, Don Quixote believes the romances he has read and strives to live them out, and it is his actions and the situations that he finds himself in during his adventures that make the reader laugh. The Milling Machine And Drilling In order to use the milling machine to manufacture a 2 in base by ВЅ in height by Вѕ in depth piece, we needed to be very precise and meticulous whit our dimensions. The process required measuring the piece in every procedure. From the beginning, when we cut our piece from the steel bar using the Band Saw machine. In the end when we drilled four different sizes of holes in the piece using two different techniques; drillingusing the milling machineand drilling by hand. Before we started machining, we were instructed in how to perform measurements using calipers and micrometers, but we mainly use micrometers during the procedure. Then, after a clear explanation of the procedure, measurements and machine uses we performed our first cut using the Band Saw by cutting a small piece from it. The edges of the steel piece weren t smooth so we machine it using the Milling machine, just one side. In order to get the requirement dimensions we set the machine in Low speed because it is better for rough cuts, high speed for small cuts. The initial height was .680 in so two rough cuts were performed one of .100 in and a second of .060 in both around 80 MPH. A third cut was necessary to get the proper height, which was only .020 in; it was a simple cut so it was necessary a high speed that was around 200. After this, the height was finally ВЅ in. Now, we needed to get the correct width. It was required to be .750 in. The piece was .958 in, so it was necessary to machine .208. First, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Old Man and the Sea Concludes with Santiagos Death Essay Old Man and the Sea Essay It is believable that Santiago is dead at the end of The Old Man and the Sea. This conclusion can be deduced from the various hints Hemingway used throughout the novel. The foreshadowing of Santiago s death, his comparison to Christ, and his bad luck helps one decipher that the deathof the old man took place at the end of the book. First, something that leads the reader to believe that Santiago is dead at the end of the book is foreshadowing. One event that foreshadowed Santiago s death was the death of the marlin. The fish and the old man displayed similar qualities of strength, bravery and determination. For instance, the old man surpassed his natural limits by staying far out at sea, while the fish... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When describing the man he said the old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck (9) . This depicts how old Santiago really was and how close he was to the end of his life. Hemingway also described the flag on his sail as looking like the flag of permanent defeat (9) . This quote foreshadows Santiago s eventual death which was caused by going out at sea past his ordinary limits. Another component that stood out in the novel to make Santiago s death appear evident was his image as a Christ figure. There were multiple times in the book that Hemingway compared Santiago to Christ. For example, when Santiago returns to shore, he shouldered the mast and started to climb (121) . This is similar to when Christ carried the cross bar on his shoulders up to Calvery. Santiago fell three times on his way back to his hut, as did Christ. Hemingway s comparison of Santiago to Christ implies that Santiago will die just like Christ did. In addition, Santiago s death may have been due to the fact that he was a very unlucky man. At the very beginning of the book Santiago is described by his fellow fishermen as a salao, which is the worst form of unlucky (9) . Meanwhile, by the conclusion of the book his unluckiness is vastly exposed. The marlin is attacked by sharks, and then attacked again to the point of obliteration. Santiago also loses his knife to the sharks and falls three times on the way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. The Effects Of Media On The Media Influences Viewers Racial Bias in the Media Influences Viewers Television reaches more consumers for more time than any other source of media. Its use for entertainment or news is overly influential, persuasive, and authoritative. Through these characteristics, any type of information or message influences its massive audience. Because of this, what Americans see or fail to see has a powerful impact on how they view other races. Young children are especially vulnerable to the information they are exposed to. TV is a vehicle to provide experiences and information not otherwise available to them. Older audiences, however, are also vulnerable to the information. Consistent messages about traits and stereotypes of other races reinforce specific ideas to the adult viewer. Viewers aren t limited to racial bias when other races are on the screen, but are also susceptible when races aren t included. As a strong and influential tool, television uses both obvious and subtle racial bias to influence its viewers. Television is a strong and influential tool. To first understand why television has a strong influence on its viewer s, it is important to know some basic facts. I chose to complete my observation of a community resource at Life Strategies Counseling Services due to its many quality online reviews. In addition, when calling the offices of local community resources, the office staff at this location was very friendly and open about the possibility of an interview with a provider with the credentials of MSW. This opportunity has helped me learn criteria related to displaying empathy to a client through expressing lack of awareness regarding the client s cultural experience (Chung, 2002, p. 157), through the process related to public transportation in my community. • 51. Smooth Muscle Contraction Smooth muscle cells of the ileum spontaneously contract due to the presence of pacemaker cells, called Cajal cells (Widmaier et al., 2014d). However, these smooth muscle they are also innervated by autonomic nerves, which can be stimulated to change contraction rates by stimulating. Figure 1, shows the effect of nerve stimulation of 17volts on isolated ileum tissue. Stimulating sympathetic (sympathetic nerves was stimulated for this particular tissue), causes release of noradrenaline, which inhabits contraction of smooth musclecells. Furthermore, according to table 1, there is a 58.83% change in contraction amplitude. It can be extrapolated that fewer smooth muscles are contracting. At lower voltages, a weaker response was observed, as voltage is increased a stronger response was observed. Increasing the voltage, means more neurons are being recruited (Widmaier et al., 2014b). In this particular experiment, stimulation of nerves around the mesenteric artery caused an inhibitory response, therefore at higher voltages, more smooth muscles are being inhibited. The frequency was set to 20Hz. Interstitial cells of Cajal, are responsible for spontaneous contraction of smooth muscle cells in the gastrointestinal tract (Widmaier et al., 2014d). Once ... After 10 minutes, once the Phentolamine was in equilibrium with the solution, the nerve was stimulated again. Comparing figure 1 and 5, it can be concluded, that the nerves being stimulated could not cause change in contraction of the muscle in the presence of Phentolamine. Thus, the nerve being stimulated must be releasing noradrenaline. Noradrenaline, released by sympathetic nerve causes decrease in motility, by inhibiting muscle contraction (Widmaier et al., ... • 53. The And Of The Renaissance When describing Giuseppe Arcimboldo s artwork, scholars consistently use one term: bizarre. Indeed, among his most famous paintings are that which feature human faces composed out of food, animals, and household objects. Modern viewers have viewed these composite paintings amusingly. However, there is more depth and context to Arcimboldo s art than simply to serve as forms of entertainment. Research suggests Arcimboldo masked social critiques and political messages in his paintings, which were reflective of the ongoing intellectual currents of the Renaissance. As best put by Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Arcimboldo s paintings can be seen not as bizarre fancies, but as the expression of the complicated intellectual world of the late sixteenth century (Elhard 117). Therefore, this paper will examine Arcimboldo s background as an artist, analyses of his composite paintings, and the relationship his artwork had to Renaissance scholarship. Arcimboldo was an Italian artist who worked in the courts of emperors Ferdinand I, Maximilian II, and Rudolf IIduring the sixteenth century, the period of the Renaissance. During his employment, Arcimboldo produced and designed tapestries, stained glass windows, festival staging, and costumes. However, he is most famous for his avant garde paintings of composite heads. These paintings were comprised of objects fruit, vegetables, books, etc. associated with the allegorical meanings of the subjects (Elhard 116). The inspiration behind these ... Alex, our protagonist/anti hero, is among the most infamous in this violent youth culture. A psychotic, yet devilishly intelligent boy of fifteen, our humble narrator beats up on old folk, rapes underaged girls, pillages, and leads his group of droogs (friends) on a chaotic path of ultra violence. In turn, he uses this justification to senselessly beat a man up for simply not liking him. This could be supported by a quote from an article about the study of free will vs determinism, which states, freedom to choose fits comfortably with the assumption that people deserve what they get (Carey 133). Alex could agree that someone of his own violent nature deserves this moment, or that the man deserved the beating. However, in a critical essay by Rubin Rabinovitz, it is argued that this expression of do what you want attitude is just as mechanically determined. By dictating a lifestyle based around this preconceived mentality, Alex is already subjecting himself to a controlled fate by following this youth culture (Rabinovitz). What s it going to be then, starts the 2nd part of the novella, focussing on Alex s incarceration and eventual treatment (77). Here, he is given a choice to remain the same and rot in prison, or find a way to change himself to ensure his freedom. The irony in this decision is when he opts to the latter option, Alex is unknowingly surrendering his freedom for an even greater state of determinism. Enter the Ludovico Treatment a process which forces Alex to view a series of films while strapped down, eyelids peeled open, as he s given a special sedative. The films, consisting of violent ...
