This document summarizes a presentation given at TESOL 2010 about the importance of teaching pragmatics in language classrooms. It discusses how pragmatics fits into communicative competence but is often not explicitly taught. It then provides rationales for teaching pragmatics based on research showing that pragmatic competence does not develop naturally. The presenters discuss their experiences integrating pragmatics into their teaching and common challenges they faced, such as lack of familiarity and resistance from others. They suggest ways to improve, such as including pragmatics in assessments, materials, and teacher training.
