Power Hungry Athens
Whose Fault Was it Anyway: The Power Hungry Athenians?
If we do go to war, have no thought that you went to war over a trivial affair (Pericles, in Hunt 101¬).
With a sudden rise to power after the end of the Persian War, Athens became a naval superpower in
control of many other city states in the Delian alliance that struck fear into their rival, the Spartans,
who believed that the Athenians might destroy Sparta s control over their own alliance. Becoming as
powerful as Athens did, the city state became power hungry and led the Greeks into long years of
turmoil, leading to the end of the Golden Age. Sparta may have started the war, but Athens holds most
of the blame, for creating an empire through the Delian League, prospering economically, ... Show

They believ[ed] that their security depended on winning a competition for power (Hunt 79). Allied
with city states from northern Greece, the islands of the Aegean Sea, and along the Ionian coast, this
alliance was built on naval power. By controlling the seas and most coastal regions Athens created a
global super power that could rival Sparta s alliance in size and strength, intimidating the other nation.
It began as a democratic alliance... (Hunt 79), but Athens soon took complete control of the allies,
because the city state was allowed to command and set up all of the league s financial arrangements
for the naval fleet. Around three hundred city states paid dues according to its size to the Athenians,
who in turn were in charge of how the dues were spent. Most of the dues that were not already paid in
the form of triremes were spent on building the boat and paying the oarsmen. It was through this line
of work and amount of income, gaining both income and political influence, that the poor citizens
were eager to expand Athens s power over other Greeks (Hunt 80). This very fleet of triremes were
used by the Athenians to force disobedient allies to pay financial dues. With Athens becoming as
powerful as they did in a short amount of time the militant Sparta feared for their superiority in
controlling their own providences and

Fingerprints Are Not The Same Techniques We Use Today
Fingerprints have been used for a very long time, as far back as 3,000 years ago in China as
identification. The use of ancient fingerprints are not the same techniques we use today. In 1880, a
man by the name of Henry Fauld, a Scottish physician working in a hospital in Japan, published his
own views on the potential application of fingerprinting to personal identification (Saferstein, 2016,
pg. 164). He suggested that the skin patterns could be important for the identification of criminals.
After comparing different fingerprints, he began to realize that each print looked remarkably different.
Fauld believed that fingerprints could be used as evidence and suggested the proposal to a fingerprint
testing center, but the offer was rejected. Years later, the first prosecution fingerprints were used in the
year 1905 in London (Rotella, Abbott, Gold, 2001). Ever since then fingerprints have been a valuable
part of crime scene investigations and if present, it is almost guaranteed that the criminal will fit the
crime. It has been a successful technique that has proved more success than any other piece of
evidence.
When looking at two pairs of hands it is hard to notice anything different between the two. However,
there are remarkable differences between the individual s fingerprints. Fingerprint analysts have
formulated three basic principles of fingerprints that hold the prints uniqueness, stability, and
appropriateness as a mean of identification. Before being able to

Cango s Hierarchical Structure
Advantage Plus has also noticed several issues surrounding CanGo s current organizational structure.
The current setup is quite hierarchical in design, with several different layers of personnel comprising
the company. The bottom layer of the company consists of four staff members (Debbie, Whitney,
Nick, and Gail). These four individuals report to five different managers. These managers include
Clark (Director of Finance), Maria (Director of Human Resources), Warren (Director of Operations),
Ethel (Director of Accounting), and Andrew (Director of Marketing.) At the top of the hierarchical
structure is Elizabeth Bennet (CEO/Founder of CanGo). Rather than continuing to operate in its
hierarchical structure, CanGo should seriously consider embracing

The American International Bank Case
THE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL BANK CASE
* Summary of the Situation
Tamara Long sat in her office reflecting on the tough past 6 weeks. She was the head of the
international department at the American International Bank (AIB). Six weeks ago, the Chairman of
the bank had called Tamara into his office. A bulletin had just come over the bank s wire indicating
that a military coup had taken place in Portugal.
The bulletin also reported that the new military dictator had frozen all foreign assets in Portugal and
had imposed strict currency controls to keep capital from fleeing the country. When the Chairman
heard about this, he asked Tamara a perfectly logical question:
What was the bank s exposure in Portugal?
It had taken Tamara over a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She had complete confidence in their judgment and was kept informed through monthly reports as
well as phone conversations on any major transactions. Tamara made semiannual visits to all the
branches and quite often would accompany the CEOs of major clients when they went abroad to
arrange for mergers or acquisitions.
During these trips, Tamara made sure that the local branch manager accompanied her on all client
visits. Once every quarter, each branch manager visited headquarters in New York to review clients,
discuss plans, and exchange ideas. Tamara would try to schedule these meetings so that as many
managers as possible would be in New York at the same time. This afforded a chance for the managers
to meet and to exchange information about mutual clients. All in all, the working environment at AIB
was competitive but cordial, and there was a feeling of trust and mutual respect among management
personnel.
Each of the branches had a computer. These ranged in size from an IBM 4300 system at the London
office to minicomputers in all the other offices. London was the most automated of the overseas
offices; it was the largest, and it also had a thriving trust operation and a merchant banking business
(securities transactions). The other offices used their computers to maintain branch financial records,
bank ledgers, and information needed to prepare government regulatory reports. Other than monthly

Short Term Memory Psychology Paper
In the film, Henry Roth is a man who has difficulty with relationships. Lucy Whitmore is an art
teacher who lives in Hawaii. Lucy cannot recall any memories from the day and the present. While
sleeping, all of Lucy s memories from the past day are erased and every morning she wakes up
believing it is October 13. 2002. A waitress at Lucy s cafe explains that Lucy has anterograde amnesia
from a car accident that Lucy was in a few months back.
Memory is a very important and essential to all of our lives. Without any type of memory from the
past, there is no way anyone could operate in the present or even contemplate the future. We would
not be able to recall anything that we did yesterday, think about what we are doing to today or what
we would like to do tomorrow, there is no possible way that we could learn anything without our
memory.
Memory covers three important basic processes including Encoding, Storage and Retrieval. Encoding
is a biological process where a new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For some reason the memory can not be retrieved. The two ways psychologists have found why we
forget is forgetting by the short term memory using the theories of trace decay and displacement. The
second way is forgetting by long term memory which can be explained by the theories of interference
and lack of consolidation. We forget because of psychological causes and biological causes. Biological
causes can be split into anterograde amnesia and retrograde amnesia. Anterograde amnesia results
from a brain injury were the person is impaired in learning new information. Memories for events that
occurred before the injury can be remembered, but events that occurred since the injury can be lost. It
is evident in the film that Lucy suffers from anterograde amnesia. In the film, Lucy s memory seems
to reset whereas in a real life case of the disease would show the person struggling to learn new
information throughout a whole

David And Goliath Compare And Contrast
In the poem Casey at Bat and story David and Goliath, a comparison of David and Casey shows
differences and similarities. In the story David and Goliath , David is similar to Casey from Casey at
the Bat because David isn t afraid to lose just like Casey. The text states that David was a sheep
tender, and Casey was a baseball player, their both different but they had one goal, to win! They both
were supposed to win anyway. Another way Casey from Casey at the Bat , and David from David and
Goliath are similar is because they are both boys. They are both boys because the text states that
David was a boy, because who would name their girl David, and Casey is a boy because girls do not
play baseball. This is a fact because people have been to baseball games and seen that they are boys,
girls play softball, boys play baseball. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text states that Casey s goal was to hit the ball and not let his whole town down, and David s goal
was to kill the giant who was threatening his army and town because he said, ¨God will protect me.¨
This is because David and Goliath were very different people with two of the same goals, 1 to defeat
the other opponent, 2 was to make their kingdom happy. In addition, one of the differences between
David from and ¨David and Goliath¨ and Casey from Casey at the Bat¨ is that David is from the bible
and Casey is a baseball player. This is known because the poem we read in class about Casey is that he
is a baseball player because baseball is the only game that uses a bat. (and softball (female version of
baseball) is too.) Also, David is from the bible because people have read this story in the bible, so they
are both different characters. The second difference between Casey and David is that David is a young
boy, and Casey was a man when he was playing

History of Ian Fleming Essay
History of Ian Fleming
Ian Fleming not just created the character of James Bond; he personified him by living an exciting
life. With his suave style and long history of lavished background he was almost born into the part of
his later creation.
Ian Fleming was born on May 8th, 1908 to his father, Valentine Fleming, and his mother, Beatrice
Fleming (Lycett 12). He was the grandson of the famous Scottish banking pioneer, Robert Fleming
(Rosenberg 5). Ian also had three brothers named Peter, Richard, and Michael. He hated his brother
Peter during most of his childhood. This was due to his brother being very successful in academics
and got his fathers attention. Fist fights usually broke out between the two of them (Lycett 15). He ...

Ian enrolled in Sandhurst: Royal Academy. He did much better in his studies since there were no
women around the college. There he took the final military exams and scored very poorly. He was in
danger of not graduating but there was an essay section of the test that enabled him to take a job as a
reporter for the British Navy. Ian took on the job with great ease. He outsmarted the older, much more
experienced by getting the information to the press much faster than any other reporter. Official were
impressed with his work and promoted him straight to lieutenant on the Royal Navy. He was stationed
on the HMS Repulse. His main job was to plan operations and attacks. He was not comfortable at all.
Ian wrote poetry about his father s death during his service on the ship. He wouldn t show the poetry
to anyone. During a mission that Ian had planned out himself, a crew member had committed mutiny
and was later found to be a spy for the Germans. Ian fought in hand to hand combat with him and took
him into custody. He even interrogated the man himself.
Another mission that was unrelated took Ian to Jamaica. He had fallen in love with the land. He
bought a beach house on a comfortable lot near the beach so that he could live there once his naval
term was up. He called the house Goldeneye because of the wonderful view every room in the house
had. Ian lived in Goldeneye two months a year until his naval term was over and he could live there
permanently.

The Certainty Of Fear Summary
In The Certainty of Fear by Audra Kendall, the author chronicles the fears we have throughout our
lifetime. Starting with the fears of childhood and then adolescence, progressing to a mid life crisis and
concluding with the fears of our senior years; I can relate to these fears but I don t remember much of
my younger years. For me, my greatest fears started as an adolescent and continue now into the mid
years of my life and further into the future of my senior years.
As a young man I was given a bike by my brother. It wasn t just any bike, it was a G10, a bike used by

Neo-Marxist Contribution to Theories O Social Class...
How far would you say that Neo Marxist have contributed to the continuing relevance of theories of
social class inequality today?
Social class inequality can be defined as the existence of socially created inequalities among and
within classes. They can be attributed to various factors such as race, colour, ethnicity, gender, income,
etc. It is arguable that inequalities that exist in post independence societies as well as the inequalities
which exist between nations can be directly traced back to the exploitative capitalism which
accompanied European colonialism. Neo Marxism has indeed contributed to the continuing relevance
of theories of social class inequality in contemporary times. Therefore, the aim of this essay is to

And in addition it should improve on the understanding of our society through integrating the major
social sciences. Neo Marxism therefore held views that were synonymous with Marxism however
they were amended and extended on his principles to keep up with modern times. Neo Marxism,
according to neo marxist Nicos Poulantzas sought to answer three basic questions that traditional
Marxist was unable to deliver a rationale for. These questions were firstly, why did the socialist and
social democratic political parties not band together against WWI? (Instead of support for their own
countries). Secondly, why although the timing seemed right for a workers revolution in the west it did
not take place? And lastly how did fascism take place in Europe at this time?
Neo Marxism is based on the total political economic cultural systems that exist in contemporary
societies. Neo Marxists were concerned with the growth of the middle class, which changed the
traditional Marxist class view of there being only two classes; to the introduction of a new class the
middle class. They studied the composition of the labour force; that is the fragmentation of the
working class and the decomposition of capital; that is the growth in the middle class. They needed to
discover whether or not social mobility was beneficial to the lower class or whether or not it leads to

Vague Expectations Of Masculinity In Heavy Metal
The vague notions of masculinity have substantial effects on an individual s self image. This statement
is verified through examining the ideological thinking that encompasses the genre of Heavy Metal.
Aspects of Heavy Metal can have an underlying connection to the ideals of masculinity. The vocal
techniques employed by the lead singer, Danny Worsnop, are often associated with the construct of
masculinity. While Otep vocalist, Otep Shamaya and Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy fame are
examples of women who utilise harsh vocals, these type of vocal growls are often perceived as taboo
for females. The female vocalists that do delve into this form of singing are often characterised as
masculine and dominant which is often perpetuated by the visual ... Show more content on

The notion that the gender constructs of male and female are meant to be binary opposing cause
conflict as all individuals will have crossed between these definitions on occasions. This is evident
through examining the contemporary machinations of the Heavy Metal genre. The narration of the
song lyrically delves into the concept of lust, propelling this notion of masculinity. Therefore, this
creates an identity crisis for males which of whom do not fit within the emotionless and fornication
obsessed archetype. This outlook on the lust also remains within the realm of heterosexuality which
also indirectly degrades a homosexual male s identification with the concept of masculinity. A sense of
violence could also be determined through the lyrics, I see you cold, I feel you heartless. This double
entendre could be interpreted as a materialistic view of the protagonist towards the female or refer to
the protagonist murdering the female character. The ideal of masculinity, in regard to the careless
attitude towards women, does not alter regardless of which interpretation of this figurative language
the audience perceives. The strong themes within the lyrics promote a degrading image of women as
purely a sex object with the sole purpose to please the desires of men. This is evident within such
lyrics as, Make this night worth my time , Your thighs were made for cheeks to graze

Algernon Charles Swinburne s Poem A Cameo
The poem, A Cameo , portrays life as an engraved painting. Algernon Charles Swinburne included six
significant figures that inquired how to escape the struggles of life. The painting retails that there is a
portrait of Desire who is painted with red blood on a ground of gold , emphasizing that the poem
represents a painting that has a base of gold covered in red. A cameo is a technique of engraving a
stone in such a way that an underlying stone of one color is exposed as a background for a low relief
design of another color (dictionary.com). A Cameo represents this description because death is similar
to the underlying stone color, whereas the figures included represent the low relief design of another

A Picture Of The Gulag Labor Camps
In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface,
we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. When we neither punish nor
reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the
foundations of justice from beneath new generations. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said in his impactful
narrative that paints a picture of the Gulag labor camps in Soviet Russia through personal experience,
eyewitness testimony and interviews, and primary research material. Solzhenitsyn is describing the
silence that survivors of the Gulag were forced to exhibit after staring terror and fear directly in the
face during their time in the Gulag. The silence Solzhenitsyn is describing, is claimed to be one of the
reason the Gulag is often not given the attention in history books and in the forefront of our minds that
the Gulag deserves. The Gulag is believed to be one of the most horrible and inhuman acts of the 20th
century, yet western society tends to shy away from mentioning the Gulag when discussing tragedy.
This paper will examine historians views on the Gulag and why it has been overlooked in history as
the horrible tragedy it was and the impact that this silence has had, not only on the survivors, but also
the impact it has had on Russia and its society as a whole.

Cassie and I have conducted an experiment for our Probs and Stats project. We did and experiment to

Our population size is the students at Alpena High. Therefore, narrowing it down to AP classes in the

This means that cable companies would be required to allow Internet service providers free access to
cable lines, like the model used for dial up Internet. They also intend to make sure that the cable

allow FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to enforce rules of net neutrality effectively.
Furthermore, Net neutrality advocates argue that allowing cable and telecommunication to act as
gatekeepers i.e. being able to control speed of loading of websites, as well as letting them to demand a
toll on quality of service would create an exploitative business model and would also slow down
innovation in online services. Further, they also argue that by charging certain sites, ISP s may be able
to block those who are unable to pay. Also, the advocates assert that every content on the Internet must
be treated same and must move at the same speeds. Presently, the order is meant to set a precedent that

Introduction Of Gas Chromatography, Ethyl Benzene, And O...
Introduction to Gas Chromatography

Introduction
Gas chromatography is a common separation technique used in analytical chemistry to separate,
identify and quantify the compounds present is a sample (Harris, 2010). The purpose of this
experiment is to analyze a sample of TEX (toluene, ethyl benzene, and o xylene) and identify the
peaks from the resulting chromatogram. Another objective is to familiarize students with the
instrumentation and theory behind the technique and compare isothermal and temperature
programmed runs.
There are two different injection methods for gas chromatography, split and splitless. Split injections
are best used for samples containing high concentrations of analytes. In this injection method, a
fraction of the sample is used and the rest is discarded. The complete injection would contain too
much analyte, overload the column, and produce inaccurate results. A splitless injection is used for
very dilute solutions. Approximately 80% of the sample is applied to the column and the gas is
analyzed by slowly raising the temperature of the column to vaporize the solvent at the head of the
column. This method cannot be used for isothermal chromatography (Harris, 2010).
Gas chromatography is similar to other chromatography methods in the sense that it has both a
stationary and mobile phase. The mobile phase consists of an inert gas,

What Is Snowboarding Persuasive Essay
Hunter S. Thompson once said, Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing.
Throughout life you are probably going to change hobbies and try new things, but your passion is
something that you enjoy doing for the rest of your life. My passion is snowboarding. It has helped me
face my fears as a shy and unconfident girl. I believe that I will always be able to turn to
snowboarding during anytime throughout my life.
The cool winter air stung my face as I exited through the ski lodge door. Board in hand, I stepped onto
the powdery snow. After each step I took all I heard was crunches and crackles from the snow
compacting underneath my weight. I nervously made my way over to the top of the bunny hill where a
tall, beat up looking man named Dave stood. He looked as if the cold weather had made him age
quicker than the rest. The earnest look on his face caused me to shudder in fear. His eyes pierced
through my soul as if warning me not to go through with this. I took a deep breath as I realized how ...

Using Radio Transmission to Promote Development Projects
In this chapter, a brief review of the relevant research literature will be presented to generate a
theoretical outline of this proposed research. This theoretical outline will guide the research strategy.
Fraser Estrada (2002) commented that since late 1970s, the importance of community participation at
all stages of a development initiative has been commonly acknowledged. Parvalla (2003) defined (as
cited in Ballur, 2012) community as a territorially bound group with some commonality of interest (p,
92) who are usually sharing a common language for daily communication with the same cultural
heritage. It is clear from this discussion that for developing any community, radio, in particular
community radio can be a supportive tool to cover wide range of population. In addition, it has a great
influencing power to motivate the marginalised group of people
According to the Community Radio Installation, Broadcast and Operation Policy (2008) by Ministry
of Information of People s Republic of Bangladesh, in the guidelines part, it stated that Community
radio is, in effect, a form of public service broadcasting, which serves a community rather than the
whole nation. Community radio is an own resource of a community, which will reflect the outlook and
attitude, norms and culture and thought and ideology of the very community people (p, 1). While
defining the community radio AMARC (the French acronym for the World Association of Community
Radio) (as cited in Ballur, 2012)

The Politics Of Political Parties
The History of Political Parties
and the importance of party platforms
11/30/2016
Anthony Cozzitorto
Ohio University
Abstract
This paper will examine the history of political parties in the United States, and also the importance of
platforms in those political parties. Research was conducted on internet resources along with books
written by political scientist.
It has been a year filled with political talk because of the 2016 Presidential election in the United
States. With the running of two very different candidates, America was glued to their TV sets, internet
connections, or their cell phones looking to get a taste of political history. It was dirty dog fight from
both sides of the political scale. People across the country would either decide to tune in or tune out to
the election. The most important question I would ask is how we got to this place in history were
people no longer trust political parties to do the right thang by the American people. An exposed,
participant angled, workable, and representative system of political parties functioning within free and
fair electoral procedures accomplishes duties that make democratic government possible.
Political parties always have been in a progression of change. This is because they have had to adjust
to developments in their societies, and in the environment in which they operate more largely.
It was first thought that the founding fathers were going to stay away from the formation of political

Chivalry In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, And Thomas...
Knights often had a certain chivalry code that they had to follow, in (Sir Gawain and the Green
Knight) and (Morte D Arthur) by Sir Thomas Malory their are examples of chivalry. Knights often had
a certain code they had to follow usually relating to religion, moral, and social code. This system kept
the knights usually under strict order. The knights had many expectations for following this certain
code, and many of them took it seriously. In (Sir Gawain and The Green Knight) and (Morte D Arthur)
there s three main points that knights must follow for their chivalry code, religion, moral, and
protecting women.
The first example of the chivalry code is in (Sir Gawain and The Green Knight) where the knight has
to follow religion. These knights often had a very good rep for the things they followed. For they were
very strict when it came to most things, religion being one of the top things they always followed.
Gawain the knight gets put into a situation where he is tested by religion. While Gawain is staying at
the castle the Lord s wife comes to seduce him. She fails for a few nights, but eventually the Knight
gives in to his moral code and does things he shouldn t have with the Lords Knight. there is none so
hardy under heaven that to hew him were able; for he could not be killed by any cunning of hand.

Geometry Of Geometry And Geometry
In the beginning there was Euclid. The geometry we studied in high school was based on the writings
of Euclid and rightly called Euclidean geometry. Euclidean geometry is based on basic truths, axioms
or postulates that are obvious . Born in about 300 BC Euclid of Alexandria a Greek mathematician and
teacher wrote Elements. The book is one of the most influential and most published books of all time.
In his book the Elements Euclid included five axioms that he deduced and which became the basis for
the geometry we now call Euclidean geometry. In Greek Euclid is Εὐκλείδης which means renowned,
glorious . This fits his work for he has been called the father of geometry and his works continue to
influence mathematical fields today. Elements was first set in type in 1482 in Venice making it one of
the earliest mathematical books to be printed following the invention of the printing press. It is
estimated by Carl Benjamin Boyer to be second only to the Bible in the number of editions published,
[7] with the number reaching well over one thousand.[8] For centuries the quadrivium was included in
the curriculum of all university students and knowledge of at least part of Euclid s Elements was
required of all students. When the content became part of other textbooks, during the 20th century, it
ceased to be considered something all educated people had to read.[9]
The five axioms or postulates that Euclid presented were basically:

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), formerly known as dysmorphophobia, is characterized by a
preoccupation of one or more perceived defects and or flaws in one s physical appearance. These
defects and or flaws are either not observable to others or appear slightly to other s. This disorder is
also characterized by repetitive behaviors and mental acts as a response to their beliefs on their
personal appearance. These behaviors can include but are not limited to mirror checking, excessive
grooming, skin picking, and comparing ones appearance to others. According to the Diagnostic and

In addition, the DSM 5, this disorder also has a high comorbidity rate with major depressive disorder
(American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Another major clinical feature to this disorder is the
repetitive behaviors done to help alleviate the obsessions one is having about their appearance. Some
of these behaviors include seeking reassurance about their looks, excessive grooming, mirror
checking, comparison to others, and trying to camouflage the perceived defect/flaw. These seem to be
the most common behaviors done in association with BDD, however they are not exclusively limited
to this as each individual displays the disorder uniquely to their preoccupation. In a study of 33 youths
with BDD it was found that 94% camouflaged their defect, 73% sought reassurance from others, and
59% excessively groomed (Carroll et al., 2002). This disorder can become so clinically significant that
many youths avoid social situations, have issues regarding school, stop working, and become isolated
due to fear of how they think they look to others. On the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) it
was found that a mean score of 44.9 45.7 was reported, indicated serious symptoms and impairment
(Phillips Rogers, 2011). There has yet to be a direct reason that this disorder develops in adolescents

drones taking to the skies, there are many new ways that robots will be able to save lives in the

This use to require bomb squad personnel to defuse live bombs, putting them at risk of injury or death.
Older bomb disposal robots would require two robots, one to capture the bomb on a live feed and the
other to use its tools (army Technology). The robots now are not just robots strapped with its own

Case Study Of Robert Deal From Emory University
Robert Deal from Emory University is studying to learn about plants and their memory of stress.
When plants face dry weather, their stomata shrink to reduce water loss. When a similar situation
places the plants under stress again, the plant seems to recall this experience and recovers quicker.
Robert Deal, who studies genetics and biochemistry, hopes to utilize this trait and pinpoint its gene. If
he can locate and activate the genetic material associated with this memory, he believes he can speed
up the process and cause plants to have the gene activated at all times, allowing the plants to withstand
drier and warmer temperatures. Other researchers have been striving for a similar goal, using the
genetic material of plants to create new hybrids that can withstand extreme weather. Across the globe,
scientists have been making modified plant varieties that can resist drought, a growing concern as
climate change becomes a more prominent issue. One hybrid has already existed since 2011 on the
market. The corn plant, known as DroughtGuard, was bred to resist drought. It contains a gene from a
bacteria that allows it to produce in times of water shortage. This corn crop has been approved ...

There is always something different, which is put into the movie to make it more exciting or quicker.
With True Grit, both movies show a number of differences, from characters to scenes or settings and
so on. The first film there was many character differences for instance, Mattie s hair was short, she
had a bob instead of two braids like it stated in the book, but in the latest film she had two braids. In
real life they also possess some character differences, in the first film the girl who was casted as
Mattie Ross, Kim Darby played her character at the age of 21 and the second movie Mattie Ross was
played by Hailee Stienfeld at the age of 13 close to Mattie s real age. When producers, directors, or
writers decide to make movies or television series out of books, they are not always the same. There is
always something that has been changed or added to series that is different from the book. For
instance, the hanging scene, in the book it described that the crowd was singing and the three men had
a chance to speak before they got hung. The hanging scene was one scene that stood out to me, in the
book it states that the man with bible led the crowd to sing Amazing Grace , and the three men that
were being hung had something to say (Portis, 22). The first one was a white man, he said he killed

Due to the fact the president of the Loquium Institute is out of town until Friday, the first act as

Trustees and Julia Smithe a board member and the only acting member of the development committee.
Davenport and Smithe are the only members of the Board of Trustees who are actively engaged in the
Loquium Institute and its mission. Since they are active in the involvement of the organization and
fundraising they will have information regarding how the organization operates and perhaps ideas on
how to best move forward with engaging the other board members to participate more in the

governing board, prepared to make personally significant commitments of time and fund (pg. 82). It is
vital to having the entire board actively engaged in order to move forward with the capital campaign

Generation after generation has set stereotypes on american teenagers, but throughout the years the

of teenagers might exaggerated, the argument is not left without a strong foundation; due to social
media, teens are progressively becoming more vulnerable to peer pressure capitulating a loss in their
sense of morality as seen in the rising rates of drug addiction, and teen pregnancy.

More tests to study for. More money to make. More sports to practice. More people to impress. It s
mind boggling the amount of pressure that society places on teens in this generation. As a result of the
staggering increase of stress left on teen s shoulders, many turn to the consumption of illegal
substances to calm themselves, and to allow themselves to take a break from reality. A study by The
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows that from 1992 to 2014 marijuana
use amongst high school teenagers has increased from 12 percent to 22 percent. This statistic is
closely related to the fact that 81 percent of high schoolers think drugs are easy to get. The fact that
teens understand drugs as an easy to get commodity reveals that teens don t think of drugs as illegal
substances that are banned from commercial use in almost all states, but more as popular retreat to
relief and relaxation. Social media also has its ties into teen drug addiction as it helps provide further
confirmation that doing drugs is the cool way to behave. Recent studies from the Recovery Village, an

other peers posts at parties and behaving in immoral ways, teens are quick to compare their own lives

transferred from the continent to the Americas. Rather, African American communities took on
African customs and incorporated them into their own distinct worldview, and these new African
American customs were even transferred back to the Continent. The Atlantic served as a passageway

Evidence for this phenomenon is found through both anecdotal stories from the Lowcountry as well as

William Shakespeare s The Trojan War
Shakespeare uses the backdrop of the Trojan War in Troilus and Cressida to explore the interpretation
of honor as something extrinsic without associating it with intrinsic moral values. In the seventeenth
century, honour was used in four different ways: fame, renown, glory; credit, good name, reputation;
noble rank, position of dignity, title of renown; source of distinction. Fame and reputation are the most
common uses of honor throughout the play. Therefore, to avoid confusion and redundancy, fame and
reputation will be synonymous to honor for this analysis. Curiously, honourable is defined as honest,
upright, and distinguished. The adjective s definition has clear moral roots based on societal and
cultural norms. Thus, in regards to morals, it seems as though during Shakespeare s time there was a
clear divergence between honor and its derivatives. Therefore, by examining the significance and
usage of honor throughout Troilus and Cressida, it becomes apparent that chivalrous and moral
undertones are being exploited to advance glory and reputation. In the Prologue, Shakespeare presents
the play with chivalrous expressions by describing the Greek invasion of Troy as a rescue mission to
save the ravished Helen who is being held prisoner behind the massive walls of Troy (I.1 9). The
classic damsel in distress setting. Menelaus rallied the kings and armies of Greece under this moral

Theme Of Blindness In Raymond Carver s Cathedral
Blindness is not limited to physical manifestation. In Raymond Carver s Cathedral, the figurative
blindness is immediately apparent through the narrator and his shallowness, irrational jealousy, and
egotistical personality. His dismissive behavior and ignorance towards the feelings of Robert, his wife
s blind friend, speak negatively of his character and reveals his insecurities. While the narrator s
emotional blindness and Robert s physical blindness initially inhibits their bond, it eventually leads the
narrator to an epiphany and the beginning of a character transformation. The different forms of
blindness allow the characters to bond and grow over the course of the story.
Throughout Robert s visit, the narrator makes snide and insensitive remarks, despite his wife s wishes.

He makes this clear in the opening paragraph of the story where he says I wasn t enthusiastic about his

eye dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to (Carver 1). The narrator
dismisses Robert in the same manner a white racist may dismiss an African American. His prejudice,
or any prejudice, is preconceived based on superficial qualities rather than actual experience or reason.
It is evident the narrator can t see beyond Robert s disability and is judging Robert because of a
characteristic that makes him uncomfortable. This unconscious placement of Robert into an atypical

The women s treatment of the students affected their productivity in the form of a self fulfilling

2008, p.76). This led them to bully the two for their own amusement, which in turn led to the
frustration of the students, and caused the boxes to be thrown at the wall.
As mentioned earlier, unnecessary conflict resulted in the wasting of resources, which is
counterproductive to any work environment. It slows down production capabilities, increases financial
expenses for damage goods, and increases safety risks. The students were being worked at a pace that
was too fast for their skill set. They tried to tell the women in control of the line speed that it was too

had barriers. The noise of the machines was too loud for the students to be able to communicate

If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on public
health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows?
There are always risks with travel and imports. The benefits to the economy and increased access to
goods are worth the risks. However, in cases of emergency, it is completely reasonable to limit trade
and travel from affected areas. When cases of mad cow disease are detected, it is common to block
imports from the affect nations (Levin Institute, 2017a). During the outbreak of ebola in Africa in
2014, the Obama administration opted for a temporary travel ban from west
Africa (Roberts, 2014). During the threat of an epidemic spreading across borders, extreme measures
have to be taken.
What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases?
International public health officials have made recommendations to help prevent the spread of disease.

Essay about Illegal Global Trade
Though rarely given enough attention in the press, the global network of counterfeited goods such as
prescription drugs, watches, and handbags have become a serious problem in the world. This
economic network impacts transnational economies than almost any other force because... The film
Illicit: the Dark Trade draws attention to this growing problem that affects our now globalized
economy. Also, the movie is an adaption to Illicit the novel written by Dr. Moisés Naím. The film
explores a maze of illegal activities and provides evidence supporting the idea that the sale of
counterfeited goods results in government instability, money laundering, corruption and a host of other
problems around the world that globalization has brought upon ... Show more content on

Since each state have been effected in differently either positively or negatively and in some instances
both. In western states a decrease in employment has caused many financial problems because large
companies have outsourced manufacturing jobs to developing countries where cheaper labor markets,
weaker labor laws and, or environmental regulations. These new means of production have very little
to no loyalty to the original corporations and managers remove the parent company and market
directly to the consumer. Sometimes this leads to the direct loss of sales which are key factors to job
losses in the United States and Europe. The numbers are derived by taking the loss of sales of a sector
or a company due to counterfeiting, and calculating the number of additional people that could have
been employed with that revenue. Estimates in the United States and Europe entail that majority of the
jobs that were lost was due to counterfeiting in these two regions alone. Many people have associated
the rise in counterfeited goods with globalization. As more companies, attempt to increase their

Social Class Vs Middle Class
It has been a well known fact for several decades now, that the middle/working class is the backbone
of the United States. This economic class of Americans are what hold the country stable through their
hard work and purchasing power. However, lately there has been a few jabs thrown at the middle
class, such as the 2007 2008 recession, problems with minimum wage and its efficacy to create a
comfortable life, and political matchups between candidates that reflect the middle class in different
ways. I believe that the middle class has had to make decisions that will benefit them financially but
hurt their desires such as, having a fewer amount of kids. To begin, money is what keeps the United
States moving day in and day out. People wake up to get money, sleep shorter hours to make more
money, and place a gate around their wants to be able to keep in as much money as possible. One want
that I believe is being affected by this is the desire to have children. Children are precious blessings
from God to us and we have a hand in creating them. However, children are expensive and the strain
that they can put on parents financially is innumerable. I believe that couples are opting to have
children depending on their financial situation more and more as of lately. ... Show more content on

The hesitation that couples have and the higher use of contraceptives has also impacted this
demographic transition. According to, Population Education The rate of decline is dependent on
economic and social factors at play the quicker gains are made in areas such as education and gender
equality, the faster birth rates decline (Grover, 2014). It is easily noticeable that as couples choose to
allow money to dictate the decisions they make, in particularly having a kid, the less births will

  • 2. Power Hungry Athens Whose Fault Was it Anyway: The Power Hungry Athenians? If we do go to war, have no thought that you went to war over a trivial affair (Pericles, in Hunt 101¬). With a sudden rise to power after the end of the Persian War, Athens became a naval superpower in control of many other city states in the Delian alliance that struck fear into their rival, the Spartans, who believed that the Athenians might destroy Sparta s control over their own alliance. Becoming as powerful as Athens did, the city state became power hungry and led the Greeks into long years of turmoil, leading to the end of the Golden Age. Sparta may have started the war, but Athens holds most of the blame, for creating an empire through the Delian League, prospering economically, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believ[ed] that their security depended on winning a competition for power (Hunt 79). Allied with city states from northern Greece, the islands of the Aegean Sea, and along the Ionian coast, this alliance was built on naval power. By controlling the seas and most coastal regions Athens created a global super power that could rival Sparta s alliance in size and strength, intimidating the other nation. It began as a democratic alliance... (Hunt 79), but Athens soon took complete control of the allies, because the city state was allowed to command and set up all of the league s financial arrangements for the naval fleet. Around three hundred city states paid dues according to its size to the Athenians, who in turn were in charge of how the dues were spent. Most of the dues that were not already paid in the form of triremes were spent on building the boat and paying the oarsmen. It was through this line of work and amount of income, gaining both income and political influence, that the poor citizens were eager to expand Athens s power over other Greeks (Hunt 80). This very fleet of triremes were used by the Athenians to force disobedient allies to pay financial dues. With Athens becoming as powerful as they did in a short amount of time the militant Sparta feared for their superiority in controlling their own providences and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1880, a man by the name of Henry Fauld, a Scottish physician working in a hospital in Japan, published his own views on the potential application of fingerprinting to personal identification (Saferstein, 2016, pg. 164). He suggested that the skin patterns could be important for the identification of criminals. After comparing different fingerprints, he began to realize that each print looked remarkably different. Fauld believed that fingerprints could be used as evidence and suggested the proposal to a fingerprint testing center, but the offer was rejected. Years later, the first prosecution fingerprints were used in the year 1905 in London (Rotella, Abbott, Gold, 2001). Ever since then fingerprints have been a valuable part of crime scene investigations and if present, it is almost guaranteed that the criminal will fit the crime. It has been a successful technique that has proved more success than any other piece of evidence. When looking at two pairs of hands it is hard to notice anything different between the two. However, there are remarkable differences between the individual s fingerprints. Fingerprint analysts have formulated three basic principles of fingerprints that hold the prints uniqueness, stability, and appropriateness as a mean of identification. Before being able to ... Social class inequality can be defined as the existence of socially created inequalities among and within classes. These questions were firstly, why did the socialist and social democratic political parties not band together against WWI? (Instead of support for their own countries). Secondly, why although the timing seemed right for a workers revolution in the west it did not take place? And lastly how did fascism take place in Europe at this time? Neo Marxism is based on the total political economic cultural systems that exist in contemporary societies. Neo Marxists were concerned with the growth of the middle class, which changed the traditional Marxist class view of there being only two classes; to the introduction of a new class the middle class. While Otep vocalist, Otep Shamaya and Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy fame are examples of women who utilise harsh vocals, these type of vocal growls are often perceived as taboo for females. The notion that the gender constructs of male and female are meant to be binary opposing cause conflict as all individuals will have crossed between these definitions on occasions. This is evident through examining the contemporary machinations of the Heavy Metal genre. The narration of the song lyrically delves into the concept of lust, propelling this notion of masculinity. Therefore, this creates an identity crisis for males which of whom do not fit within the emotionless and fornication obsessed archetype. This outlook on the lust also remains within the realm of heterosexuality which also indirectly degrades a homosexual male s identification with the concept of masculinity. A sense of violence could also be determined through the lyrics, I see you cold, I feel you heartless. This double entendre could be interpreted as a materialistic view of the protagonist towards the female or refer to the protagonist murdering the female character. The ideal of masculinity, in regard to the careless attitude towards women, does not alter regardless of which interpretation of this figurative language the audience perceives. Introduction to Gas Chromatography Jeffrey Palumbo ID: 20523300 Chem 224L Section 003 Partner: Victor Łotocki Date of Experiment: June 17, 2015 Introduction Gas chromatography is a common separation technique used in analytical chemistry to separate, identify and quantify the compounds present is a sample (Harris, 2010). The purpose of this experiment is to analyze a sample of TEX (toluene, ethyl benzene, and o xylene) and identify the peaks from the resulting chromatogram. Another objective is to familiarize students with the instrumentation and theory behind the technique and compare isothermal and temperature programmed runs. There are two different injection methods for gas chromatography, split and splitless. Split injections are best used for samples containing high concentrations of analytes. In this injection method, a fraction of the sample is used and the rest is discarded. The complete injection would contain too much analyte, overload the column, and produce inaccurate results. A splitless injection is used for very dilute solutions. Approximately 80% of the sample is applied to the column and the gas is analyzed by slowly raising the temperature of the column to vaporize the solvent at the head of the column. This method cannot be used for isothermal chromatography (Harris, 2010). Gas chromatography is similar to other chromatography methods in the sense that it has both a stationary and mobile phase. This theoretical outline will guide the research strategy. Fraser Estrada (2002) commented that since late 1970s, the importance of community participation at all stages of a development initiative has been commonly acknowledged. Parvalla (2003) defined (as cited in Ballur, 2012) community as a territorially bound group with some commonality of interest (p, 92) who are usually sharing a common language for daily communication with the same cultural heritage. It is clear from this discussion that for developing any community, radio, in particular community radio can be a supportive tool to cover wide range of population. • 25. The Politics Of Political Parties The History of Political Parties and the importance of party platforms 11/30/2016 Anthony Cozzitorto Ohio University Abstract This paper will examine the history of political parties in the United States, and also the importance of platforms in those political parties. Research was conducted on internet resources along with books written by political scientist. It has been a year filled with political talk because of the 2016 Presidential election in the United States. With the running of two very different candidates, America was glued to their TV sets, internet connections, or their cell phones looking to get a taste of political history. It was dirty dog fight from both sides of the political scale. People across the country would either decide to tune in or tune out to the election. The most important question I would ask is how we got to this place in history were people no longer trust political parties to do the right thang by the American people. An exposed, participant angled, workable, and representative system of political parties functioning within free and fair electoral procedures accomplishes duties that make democratic government possible. Political parties always have been in a progression of change. This is because they have had to adjust to developments in their societies, and in the environment in which they operate more largely. It was first thought that the founding fathers were going to stay away from the formation of political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first example of the chivalry code is in (Sir Gawain and The Green Knight) where the knight has to follow religion. These knights often had a very good rep for the things they followed. For they were very strict when it came to most things, religion being one of the top things they always followed. Gawain the knight gets put into a situation where he is tested by religion. • 29. Geometry Of Geometry And Geometry In the beginning there was Euclid. The geometry we studied in high school was based on the writings of Euclid and rightly called Euclidean geometry. Euclidean geometry is based on basic truths, axioms or postulates that are obvious . Born in about 300 BC Euclid of Alexandria a Greek mathematician and teacher wrote Elements. The book is one of the most influential and most published books of all time. In his book the Elements Euclid included five axioms that he deduced and which became the basis for the geometry we now call Euclidean geometry. In Greek Euclid is Εὐκλείδης which means renowned, glorious . This fits his work for he has been called the father of geometry and his works continue to influence mathematical fields today. Elements was first set in type in 1482 in Venice making it one of the earliest mathematical books to be printed following the invention of the printing press. It is estimated by Carl Benjamin Boyer to be second only to the Bible in the number of editions published, [7] with the number reaching well over one thousand.[8] For centuries the quadrivium was included in the curriculum of all university students and knowledge of at least part of Euclid s Elements was required of all students. When the content became part of other textbooks, during the 20th century, it ceased to be considered something all educated people had to read.[9] The five axioms or postulates that Euclid presented were basically: 1. When plants face dry weather, their stomata shrink to reduce water loss. When a similar situation places the plants under stress again, the plant seems to recall this experience and recovers quicker. Robert Deal, who studies genetics and biochemistry, hopes to utilize this trait and pinpoint its gene. If he can locate and activate the genetic material associated with this memory, he believes he can speed up the process and cause plants to have the gene activated at all times, allowing the plants to withstand drier and warmer temperatures. Other researchers have been striving for a similar goal, using the genetic material of plants to create new hybrids that can withstand extreme weather. • 38. William Shakespeare s The Trojan War Shakespeare uses the backdrop of the Trojan War in Troilus and Cressida to explore the interpretation of honor as something extrinsic without associating it with intrinsic moral values. In the seventeenth century, honour was used in four different ways: fame, renown, glory; credit, good name, reputation; noble rank, position of dignity, title of renown; source of distinction. Fame and reputation are the most common uses of honor throughout the play. Therefore, to avoid confusion and redundancy, fame and reputation will be synonymous to honor for this analysis. Curiously, honourable is defined as honest, upright, and distinguished. The adjective s definition has clear moral roots based on societal and cultural norms. Thus, in regards to morals, it seems as though during Shakespeare s time there was a clear divergence between honor and its derivatives. Therefore, by examining the significance and usage of honor throughout Troilus and Cressida, it becomes apparent that chivalrous and moral undertones are being exploited to advance glory and reputation. In the Prologue, Shakespeare presents the play with chivalrous expressions by describing the Greek invasion of Troy as a rescue mission to save the ravished Helen who is being held prisoner behind the massive walls of Troy (I.1 9).
