RV 2014: Performance Measurements People can Actually Understand by Kevin BaconRail~Volution
Performance Measurements People can Actually Understand
How can we measure and make the case for streetcar, light rail and bus rapid transit in an understandable way? How can we use the results to inform the elected officials who are held accountable for transportation decisions? The New Starts Criteria, often used to evaluate projects, can be complicated and confusing to the public. Learn techniques to describe project benefits in line with the values of citizens and elected officials. Hear how California is replacing traditional level-of-service analysis with metrics aligned with environmental goals. Will it lead to more sustainable transportation options and healthier communities, instead of roadway solutions? Come along and find out!

What does it mean to build a sustainable corridor? How do you honor the overall goal of conserving resources, but also engage stakeholders to develop the right type of project for their community? Take a wider look at the national perspective on building sustainable corridors. What is being done across the country to conserve resources and involve communities in these efforts? Then hear stories about a successful sustainable corridor in Portland; Albuquerque's BRT project; and an urban green plan to transform existing park-and-ride lots along Los Angeles' growing transit network into more sustainable places.

Title: Maximizing Biking and Walking Access to Transit
Track: Connect
Format: 90 minute panel
Abstract: Hear from agencies including King County Metro, Sound Transit, and TriMet about ways they have prioritized better walk and bike connections to transit. These investments can maximize transit ridership, especially important in an era of constrained transit funding, growing multi-modal transport demand, and transitioning land use patterns.

Webinar Replay - Sharing the Big Picture on Transit in Metro AtlantaBrian Carr
There are many transit operators in the metro Atlanta region, with service into and out of more places than you may realize. In addition, there are resources for last-mile connectivity, discounted fares, pre-tax benefits and support that make transit options more practical for more workplaces ... even those outside the city center. This webinar features representatives from many of the different regional and county providers, discussing how their their service area contributes to the total network and new developments they are working on. Plus, details on the "Dump the Pump" event taking place June 17-21 in the Atlanta region, as well as how the Commuter Choice program can leverage payroll tax savings.
Mobility that Enhances the Human: Pam O'Connor - Council Member Santa Monica ...Smart City
Santa Monica is the heart of Silicon Beach, economic development spawned by the City’s investment in its CityNet Broadband Infrastructure. How is the City using the tools of such technology innovators to enhance the ability of people to navigate Santa Monica safely in an era of fast paced emerging and disruptive transportation services. How to address challenges of today such as managing traffic flow and parking and “traditional” first-last mile solutions such as bike-share along with emerging options such as dockless electric scooters. What can the City do to prepare for tomorrow’s autonomous vehicles, to incentivize electrification and sharing, and create “Go Zones” as well as preparing for the yet to be known. And all of this under the overarching requirement of ensuring the safety of people.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
