A brief history of the internet. From the beginnings of ARPA to ARPANET, to the wake of Routers to Servers, to the WWW of Tim Berners-Lee to the ISP's. Until the current age of access to information never before imagined.
The Internet grew out of US efforts to build the ARPANET, a network of peer computers built during the cold war. The two major players were military and academia. The network was simple and required no efforts for security or social responsibility. The early Internet community was mainly highly educated and respectable scientist. In the early 1990s the World Wide Web, a hypertext system is introduced, and soon browsers start to appear, leading the commercialization of Net. New businesses emerge and a technology boom known as the dot-com era.
The network, now over 40, is being stretched. Problems such as spam, viruses, antisocial behaviour, and demands for more content are prompting reinvention of the Net and threatening its neutrality. Add to this government efforts to regulate and limit the network.
In this lecture we look at the Internet and the impact of the network. We will also look at the future of the Internet.

1) INNOVATE – NO MATTER WHAT
2) MULTIPLE (BALANCED) FOUNDERS
3) BE A GREAT FOUNDER – PARTLY “NUTS”
4) BUILD GREAT TEAM(S)
5) SEEK OUT SYNERGISTIC INVESTORS – 6 DEGREES
6) INTEGRATE SWEAT EQUITY
7) BUILD THAT TRUST RELATIONSHIP – ITS CRITICAL

DATA driven behavioral DESIGN
FOR YOU
/// standing on the shoulders of giants \\\
VIMI leverages the Nobel prize winning research of psychologists & behavioral economists Daniel Kahneman, Richard Thaler, Robert Cialdini, & Nir Eyal to deliver wins for our friends.
Have you ever missed your freeway exit because you were talking on your phone? That's because concentration has a price, and we humans are actually incapable of multitasking, despite our belief that we can.
We all know that samples, free tasters and campaign donations are cases where our urge to reciprocate is being leveraged for someone’s benefit, but how can we optimize our ROI on commercial giving?
EVOLUTION FAVORS THE LAZY
Science correlates lower metabolic rates & slower lives to better chances of species survival.
WE’RE BUILT TO BE LAZY - For most of our existence, conserving energy for when it was absolutely needed was a survival necessity. The tools we use to avoid thinking are called “Heuristics”, or “Cognitive Biases”.
Understanding these “shortcuts”, that help us make decisions without having to think, is key to the practice of behavioral design because, they’re hard-wired in our brain, AND AFFECT ALL OF US...

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

“...A globally connected computer

data from anywhere…”
This is 1st description of computers not only as
calculating machines, but also as:
“...joyful tools, serving to inspire

“…
In the Beginning, ARPA created the ARPANET.
And the ARPANET was without form and void.
And darkness was upon the deep.
And the spirit of ARPA moved upon the face of the
network and ARPA said, 'Let there be a protocol,' and
there was a protocol. And ARPA saw that it was
good.
And ARPA said, 'Let there be more protocols,' and it
was so. And ARPA saw that it was good.
And ARPA said, 'Let there be more networks,' and it
was so…"
36. “…ARPANET came out of our
frustration that there were
only a few powerful research
computers in the country,
and many researchers, who
needed access to them, were
separated from them
geographically…”
[Dr. Charles M. Herzfeld

39. The first 4 ARPANET computers used different
operating systems, forcing designers to come up
with a common set of rules they all could follow.
This was the Network Control Protocol (NCP).
In 1983, ARPANET switched to the
TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL &
INTERNET PROTOCOL SUITE
TCP/IP
…It’s used to this day
62. The Domain Name System maps out
the relation between the numerical
addresses of host computers, and the
names associated with them.
Prior to its inception these were
maintained locally on each machine,
however the growth of the Internet
soon made this impossible.
64. DNS distributes the responsibility for assigning and mapping
domain names by designating Name Servers for each
domain. They’re assigned responsibility for their domains,
and can assign responsibility for their sub-domains.
Distribution makes DNS fault tolerant and avoids the need
for any single central register to be continually consulted
and updated
