In this speech, I make four points about poverty that you can read on the slides. These four simple points, when sufficiently explained, prompt an important and meaningful conversation about how we might address poverty around the world and in our own backyards.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Poverty is the lack of living condition
such as the shortage of food and
unavailable shelter.
Poverty also means not being able to
send children to events and birthday
parties and not having decent
clothing.
Poverty is not being able to pay for
medications to cure illness.
3. Dr Mahbubul Haq, one of the most
reowned economist is Asia, helped
people facing poverty in Pakistan to get
out of their discrimination from the rest.
Haq explains, “What is more relevant
than poverty of income is poverty of
opportunity, which means denial of
access to education, credit, and other
economic and political opportunities. It is
such denial of opportunities that prevents
the poor from crossing the threshold to a
decent living standard.”
4. The facts about poverty
At least 80% of humanity live on less than $10
per day
The income difference worldwide is widening
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die
each day due to poverty. And they “die
quietly in some of the poorest villages on
earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the
conscience of the world. Being meek and
weak in life makes these dying multitudes
even more invisible in death.
5. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st
century unable to read a book or sign
their names.
Lots of children are dying due to poverty
and other diseases because they cannot
afford to get medication and see doctors.
