5. Types of email protocols
• There are 3 main types of email protocols
• 1. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
• 2. POP (Post Office Protocol)
• 3. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol).
6. Incoming Mail Server
• 1. POP (Post Office Protocol)
• 2. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol).
8. Outgoing Mail Server
• 3. Outgoing Mail server
• SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol )
• SMPT is a primarily sends messages to a server for forwarding.
10. POP3 two ports
• port 110: default, non-encrypted port.(no-safety)
• port 995: should be used when the user needs to connect using POP3
securely.(SSL/TLS).
11. • What is SSL (secure sockets layer)
• SSL Stands for secure sockets layer. Protocol for web browsers and
servers that allows for the authentication, encryption and decryption of
data sent over the Internet.
• What is TLS (Transport Layer Security)
• Transport Layer Security (TLS) encrypts data sent over the Internet
to ensure that eavesdroppers and hackers are unable to see what you
transmit which is particularly useful for private and sensitive
information such as passwords, credit card numbers, and personal
correspondence.
•
12. • (SSL/TLS)
• What is difference between SSL and TLS?
• SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is less secured as compared to
TLS(Transport Layer Security). TLS (Transport Layer Security)
provides high security. SSL is less reliable and slower. TLS is highly
reliable and upgraded.
13. Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)
• Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a protocol for accessing
email or bulletin board messages from a (possibly shared) mail server
or service.
• An IMAP server typically listens on port number 143. IMAP over
SSL/TLS (IMAPS) is assigned the port number 993.
15. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
• SMTP is used to send and receive email. It is sometimes paired with
IMAP or POP3 (for example, by a user-level application), which
handles the retrieval of messages, while SMTP primarily sends
messages to a server for forwarding.
• Port 25 is the original standard email SMTP port and the oldest, since
it first debuted in 1982. Today, the Internet Assigned Numbers
Authority (IANA), the group responsible for maintaining the internet
addressing scheme, still recognizes port 25 as the standard, default
SMTP port.
17. Outlook Storage types formats
• 1- (. pst files)
• 2- (. ost files)
• 1- (. pst files)
• A Personal Folders file (. PST) is an Outlook data file used to store local
copies of messages, calendar events, and other items from your
Exchange mailbox. Its appearance closely resembles Outlook 2003, and it
can contain all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and
Contacts.
• 2- (. ost files)
• Outlook Data Files (. ost) are used when you have an Exchange account
and want to work offline or use or use the default Cached Exchange
Mode. This type of data file is also used for accounts that you set up with
the Outlook Connector for Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail).
