Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is used to create loop-free networks by identifying redundant links and shutting them down. It counts the number of links and only activates one, regardless of how many exist. STP is commonly used in switches and bridges to prevent undesirable loops in Ethernet networks. While it supports link redundancy and prevents loops, it can lead to inefficient use of network resources by blocking links unnecessarily and may not be able to handle increased demands of modern data centers.
