Introduction
English ability is gradually becoming more compulsory for various jobs as an
international lingua franca because of globalisation (Silver, Hu and Iron, 2002:81).
In this globalising world, the English Education in Japan (EEJ) has been censured
since the turn of the century (Kikuchi and Charles, 2009:173). The biggest failure is
communicative language skill. For example, people who graduated from high school
cannot easily have daily talks in English though they have learned it for a minimum
of 6 years before (Hosoki, 2011:199). In addition, the TOEFL score in Japan is the
fourth lowest out of thirty one Asian counties (Appendix1), and the speaking score in
Japan is the lowest of them (Education Teaching Service, 2017). These failures are
described as the result of poor English education.
Although much research about failures in EEJ has been done, there is little
research to compare with other countries. In this research, EEJ will be compared
with Singapore and South Korea Singapore, which rank higher in the world s
largest ranking of countries by English skills (Ef.co.uk, 2017). The aim of this
research is to address factors that contribute towards poor English in Japan and to
discover solutions by analysing education systems in Singapore and South Korea.
Firstly, EEJ will be analysed in terms of its failures. Secondly, the strength of the
education in Singapore and South Korea is to be analysed. Lastly, this research will
provide some solutions as to how Japan can implement these findings in the English

The opera Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera was conducted by Pablo Heras
Casado. The three principal singers were Piotr Beczala as the Duke, Zeljko Lucic
as Rigoletto and Olga Peretyatko as Gilda. This being my first opera, I was
surprised by how large and grandiose the house was, which is in sharp contrast to my
typical experience when I see musicals.The production decided to place a modern
twist on the setting of the opera, rather than the original setting of 16th century Italy,
the story is placed in Las Vegas in the 20th century. The set is constructed to reflect
that in the first act with a casino scene complete with neon lights, card tables and
roulette. In my opinion, this all seemed to distract the viewer from the story and
the change in setting didn t enhance the production itself. Rather it made me think
about how out of place this all was instead of focusing on the opera itself. The first
act was fairly difficult for me to suspend disbelief and get into the plot of the opera.
This had much to do with me being initially turned off by the casino as the setting
for this opera. Although in later acts I was able to move past the modern set that was
only because this set became less pronounced in the second and third acts.

The stage of infancy lasts from birth until approximately two years of age
(Sigelman Rider, 2010). The physical development from infant to child occurs in a
cephalocaudal direction: the head and upper body develop prior to the lower body
(Sigelman Rider, 2010). Because of the rapid development at this stage children need
to get good solid nutrition and need to be watched closely as they are often unable to
coordinate their body or understand the dangers of certain situations (e.g., such as
when my one year old cousin put his finger in an electrical outlet). During this period
a great deal of developing and learning occurs. Learning is facilitated through
environmental cues, such as the behavior and actions of parents. Very basic skills
become mastered throughout this period such as nursing, crying, motor coordination,

need to rethink our attitudes of aging... our negative images of old age are constantly
reinforced through film, television, and newspapers, where representation often
resembles caricature (Gibson, 87). By only accepting and representing one small
portion of society, the media is setting up consequences for the rest of society who do
