What Coaching IS NOT
Coaching is not Mentoring
• Mentoring - passing on of
knowledge, experiences, and
skills
• Usually by someone who is
older and wiser.
• Has normally achieved the goal
themselves
• A Coach may not have any
experience in the given
coaching area.
Coaching is not Consulting
• A Consultant uses his/her own skills to improve a
given situation.
• Whereas, a Coach brings out the Client's expertise to
do so.
Coaching is not Therapy or Counseling
• Therapy/ Counseling - focus on feelings related to past
events
• Coaching is oriented towards goal setting and
encouraging the Client to actively move forward.
• Tony Grant from Sydney University said, "Therapy is
like helping someone with a broken leg to walk again.
Coaching is helping them to run the four minute mile."
Coaching is not Fixing
• No Coach can ‘fix’ a problem for a Client. For that
matter no Coach can ‘change’ a Client. Only a Client
can do that.
• It is not the job of the Coach to direct the Client to any
given way forward.
• The Coach lives by the motto that every Client
presents himself or herself to the Coach whole and
complete, able to generate his or her own perfect
answers.
Coaching is not Training/ Teaching
• Training is directive, driven by the Trainer who will tell,
instruct and generally control most of both the
process and the content.
• In coaching it is the Client who does most of the
talking and with the facilitation of the Coach increases
his/her level of self-awareness and clarity around the
goal and the way forward.
So what IS Coaching
really?
Simply put
• It’s a powerful conversation between a Coach and a
Client where the Coach uses tools like questioning,
listening, intuition, observation and feedback.
• The use of these by a Coach helps a Client uncover for
himself/ herself the fastest and the best way to move
forward and deal with their challenges.
• The power of coaching can be best experienced
through an actual session. Words cannot describe
adequately how it works.
