Dear potential coachee,
My name is Carol Iten and I am a coach in training / enrolled in the Associate
Coaching Course with the Centre for Coaching (Graduate School of Business,
University of Capetown), to obtain the knowledge and skills to become a coach.
The most important part of the course is putting my learning into practice with
real people and I am looking for 4 individuals who will be coached for 5-8
sessions over the next 6 months at no cost.
What is coaching?
It is not a coincidence that the word “Coach” is synonomous with and derived
from the word “carriage”, because quite simply put, coaching is the process
used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be.
It’s a skillful methodology for developing self and others so that people are more
effective and fulfilled. It involves the development of increasing competence in
the person being coached. It’s a confidential, non-judging relationship based on
mutual respect, where the coach is aiming to help the coachee see the situation
in a new way which unlocks new possibilities for them.
How does it differ from....
• Managing – is power based, and involves directing people on what to do
• Mentoring – involves an expert or wiser elder advising on what to do
• Counselling – Focuses on helping the individual to explore, understand,
and sometimes solve their own issues based on their past experiences
• Consulting – is led by experts in their field, is solutions-based, focuses on
specific work issues or problems.
• Training - is about teaching or instructing a particular skill or knowledge
and is normally given in a formal environment.
Coaching is about increasing an individual's knowledge and thought processes
with a particular task, process or issue. It creates a supportive environment
that develops critical thinking skills, ideas, and behaviors about a subject or
situation. Although it is closely tied to training, it is more personal and intimate
in nature. It focuses on leading and empowering the coachee to become self-
correcting and self-generating over time, and hence is generally achieved with
between 5-8 sessions, with activities which the coachee does between sessions
to build competence.
2. Examples of scenarios when coaching helps us in our personal life:
• Developing new habits that better serve us or breaking entrenched ones
that no longer serve us.
• Tackling Issues that we are ‘stuck’ on
• Increasing motivation to take on new challenges or complete existing
ones.
• Learning to better managing complex personal relationships and/or
conflicts (e.g: when couples’ interests begin to diverge, handling toddler’s
or teenagers, etc)
Examples of scenarios when coaching helps us in our professional life:
• Exploring new career opportunities and/or shifting focus in one’s life or
career
• Developing new skills (e.g when promoted to a new position)
• Identifying and solving business issues (e.g. a re-structure, to lower costs,
to implement a new process/system etc).
• Learning to better manage managing relationships with colleagues,
subordinates and/or superiors (e.g: striking the right balance between
friendship and leadership with subordinates, keeping bounderies, etc.)
Commitment required:
• An initial face-to-face session to build the relationship for understanding,
to explore the issue the coachee wants to be coached on.
• Between 5 and 7 one hour sessions in person or over Skype to explore
possibilities for change and develop an action plan.
