`` Design Is For Living ``
Design is for living . The adage fashioned a widespread shift in design during the 1940s and
1950s. It revolutionized the form by creating an electrifying visual language that signaled a new
age and a fresh start two of the powerhouses were Charles and Ray Eames. The Eameses were a
husband and wife team whose unique synergy led to a whole new expression in furniture and
architecture. The couple advocated the principles of Modernism through the adaptation of
innova¬tion from wartime technology .Their design style can be branded as California
Modernism, a term that is often used interchangeably with Mid Century Modernism. This distinct
style embodied an approach to design that opposed the social conscience of the Bauhaus in order
to embrace looser, warmer design which was both more expressive of local character and in touch
with the realities of commerce and salesmanship. With the west coast coming of age, economy shift
from making goods to producing information and the global expansion of American culture; their
lives and work embodied some of America s defining movements. They contributed to architecture,
film, industrial and graphic design. They were known as pioneers of affordable mass production
and residential constructions. The evolution from furniture designers to cultural ambassadors
validated their bents and overlaps with country s interest and projected how design can enhance the
lives and practical needs of ordinary people and not just the elite. In 1940,

Causes Of Villain In Frankenstein
On the face of this gothic novel is a tale about a terrible creature that committed hideous acts against
the society. Most readers believe that the monster is the story s villain Contrary to this, the hidden
but true villain is Victor Frankenstein because the fateful events are the repercussions of his
reckless and irresponsible behavior. Victor Frankensteindid not directly kill his lovely family.
However, he is the only one to blame and only cause of the deathly catastrophe through the monster
s creation, his lack of responsibility for the monster, his isolation from the world resulting in the
creature s freedom to roam about at its pleasure neglected and unattended. Therefore Victor
Frankenstein was the root cause of the ruin of his family, his creation and eventually his very own
life.
At first, even before the monster s creation, Frankenstein s physical and mental health is already
in a poor state because of his infatuation with the experiment. Every night I was oppressed by a
slow fever, and I became nervous to a most painful degree...sometimes I grew alarmed at the
wreck I perceived that I had become (Shelly 42.) This points to Victor as the sole perpetrator in his
pain as he seeks knowledge. His physical and mental condition continue to deteriorate as the story

retreats with a howl of devilish revenge and despair. The monster feels that this selfish act is
another form of betrayal. He thus goes on to murder Frankenstein s wife Elizabeth and close ally

BeyoncГ©, one of the most famous entertainer, singer, actresses of our time released her sixth

Queen Bey s album, Lemonade , is second to none. The edgy music choice, the dauntless lyrics,

The Progressive Era And Political Reform
The Progressive era was a period around 1890 1920, in which the rise of social activism became
apparent as well as political reform. Americans during this time began to move away from rural
and began to colonize cities. Progressive activists at the time sought to eliminate government
corruption, increase regulation in business practices, and address and resolve health issues in
the work force. Journalists known as muckrakers were catalysts of change by informing the
public about prominent issues at the time including, child labor, corruption in government, and
unlawful practices acted out by business men. One of the key contributors to the rise of the
progressive era was immigration. From 1800 to 1900, the US received a large influx of in the
number of immigrants, fueled by economic freedom and emancipation from there socially
restrictive homeland. It is estimated that a total of more than 15 million immigrants arrived in
the US during this time. A large number of these immigrants settled in densely populated cities.
In 1910, three fourths of New York s City s population was either immigrants or first generation
Americans . The second reason was the rise of the middle class. A majority of progressivists
came from the middle class. One of the motives that drove progressivists was to give the public
direct control over the government; this was accomplished by direct primaries that would elect
candidates for public office. The third primary factor which led to the rise of

Hole In The Rock Trek

At a time when the mormons arrived in the valley of Great Salt Lake and expanded settlements,
the Hole In The Rock expedition took place. The Explorers explored several places along the
way and encountered different environments such as The Four Corners. These encounters and
exploration lead to the creation of the Hole In The Rock in 1880. This is significant because it
is an example to all Latter Day Saints of the power available to us when that are on the Lord s
errand. Religious persecution was a big part of this event. Because of religious persecution the

Comparing The Classical Theory And Psychological...
Introduction 126
The classical theory and psychological positivism theory can still be used to conceptualise crime in
the 21st century, regardless of the shift in criminological thinking. Both theories offer a unique
perspective as to why individuals engage in criminal behaviour, with one suggesting that an
individual acts by their own free will to engage in behaviour while the other argues that criminal
behaviour is due to internal factors influencing the behaviour. This critique will examine the
characteristics and history of each theory before applying the understanding of both theories to the
real life crime case of Katherine Knight. The application of each theory will examine potential
reasons as to why Katherine Knight engaged in criminal behaviour, while comparing and
contrasting the strengths and weaknesses of both theories. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The classical theory incorporates a more legal definition of crime due to the circumstances in
which it emerged. Crime is conceptualised as a result of a person acting upon their own free will
to engage in the criminal behaviour (SOURCE). However, psychological positivism rejects the
notion and instead argues a person who commits crime is engaging in the behaviour due to internal
factors that have developed during childhood and adolescences (SOURCE). The difference in
understanding can be due to the methods used to approach crime. Psychological positivism utilises
a scientific method to theorise about the deviant behaviour in individuals. However, this is often
criticised as there is no specific method to measure the internal influences (SOURCE). In contrast,
the classical theory ignores the factors that cause individuals to engage in crime, and instead sums
the behaviour to be the rational choice of an individual to engage in behaviour that offers the most
pleasure for minimal pain

How Did Galilei Contribute To Science
Galileo Galilei made contributions to the fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics,
and philosophy. He was an extraordinarily intelligent man and had a big part during the
Enlightenment. He made his first discovery in 1581 while he was a student at the University of
Pisa, where he originally went into medicine but switched his focus to mathematics. He described
the rules that governed the motion of a pendulum. He was then the chair of mathematics at the
Universities of Pisa and Padua from 1589 to 1610.
In 1604 Galileo published The Operations of the Geometrical and Military Compass, revealing his
skill with experiments and practical technological applications. He invented a hydrostatic balance

He discovered four new stars orbiting Jupiter, the planet s four moons to be exact, he called the
stars the Medician stars. With these new discoveries he had gained even more evidence to support
the Copernican theory. He published a treatise on his discovery which soon made him a very well
known man in Italy. Many people including scientists and theologians said his theory differed from
the Aristotelian view of the Universe, and his depiction of the rugged surface of our own moon
greatly disagreed with the idea of heavenly perfection.
In 1632 Galileo published his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, he presented
arguments for both sides of the heliocentrism debate. He had no luck fooling anyone with his
attempt at balance, he was called before the Roman Inquisition in 1633, he tried to deny
advocating heliocentrism, and later said he did it unintentionally. He was convicted of vehement
suspicion of heresy, and was threatened with torture to express sorrow and curse his error. He
was nearly 70 years old at the time of his trial, and he spent the last years of his life under house
arrest. He died in 1642, on the 8th of January, after suffering a fever and heart

Speech On Secondhand Smoke
Our Society and Secondhand Smoke
Secondhand smoke is serious health hazard to everyone; in order to lessen, if not totally
eliminate, children s exposure to cigarette smoke and to encourage the cigarette smokers to be
more responsible for the sake of others, amending the tobacco regulation act is a must.
Secondhand smoke is a mixture of the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar
combined with the smoke breathed out by a smoker. Secondhand smoke is accountable for 42,000
deaths annually to nonsmokers in the United States, including nearly 900 infants, according to a
new UCSF (University of California San Francisco) study. Altogether, annual deaths from

How Does Baraka Destroy Nature
Mankind can destroy nature, but when nature strikes, it can be more powerful than any
modifications that humanity makes on it. Baraka depicts the overwhelming strength of nature
through action shots of Kuwaiti oil fires and their devastation in the post war state. In the
Persian Gulf War of 1991 between Kuwait and Iraq, conflict over oil and petroleum led to
catastrophic environmental degradation and consequences. Burning for about 7 months, fires
engulfed and towered over the Kuwait landscape as Iraqi forces set over 650 oil wells ablaze.
Washed over by poisonous dark smoke, soot, and ash, land combined with oil formed hardened
layers of tarcrete, and rain as black as night fell upon the sand. Animals and livestock died as their
lungs blackened from the toxic atmosphere, and the water in lakes was replaced with oil. Although
humannature ultimately created this disaster, the extent of their power does not expand to the point
where they can manipulate something like fire into a colossal environmental calamity. While fire
may frequently be associated with destruction and evil, it is an archetypal symbol that... Show more

The aftermath of the oil fires started by the Iraqis shows how much of a distinction there is between
humanity and nature. As man takes weeks, months, or years to destroy nature in order to establish
human necessities, like an unsuspecting wave, nature is able to wreak destruction on man in only a
few seconds.
Humanity s hunger for power goes beyond attempting to take it away from nature, but also trying to
take it away from each other; therefore, when man destroys man, the resulting factor of death

My Mother who Came from China, She Never Saw the Snow
Every person in the world has struggles, but some have more than others. Some people work for
multiple hours for very little pay. Immigrant factory workers rarely get the chance to enjoy the
better qualities in life. In the poem, My Mother, Who Came from China Where She Never Saw
Snow , Laureen Mar tells about an Immigrant mother from china works in a factoryfor very little
pay. She had worked for twenty five years and never gotten a raise. In the poem Laureen Mar uses
imagery, irony, and punctuation to demonstrate the harshness that immigrant factory workers are
put through.
The description of the factory and workers helps demonstrate what kind of working conditions
there were. Laureen s description details the factory to show the dark and gloomy environment
they work in every day. The narrator describes the room as a standard factory, In the huge,
rectangular room, the ceiling / A machinery of pipes and fluorescent lights (lines 1 2).
Not only is the environment depressing, but the workers also have poor working conditions.
Consequently the workers have adapted to the environment, but also adapted to the relentless
work. The female workers day in and day out work constantly, conditioned to do the same thing
over and over. Laureen describes, Ten rows of women hunch over machines, / their knees pressing
against pedals / and pushing the shiny fabric thick as tongues / through metal and thread (3 5).

Venus Bust Analysis
For my project, I have recreated a bust of Venus. A bust is a sculpture of a person s head,
shoulders, and chest. This allows you to include very intricate details and helps you achieve a goal
in realism. There were many sculptures of Venus in ancient Rome, including the Venus Genetrix,
meaning Mother Venus in Latin. I chose to create a bust so I could, too, focus on the intricate
details, though my version is very small, it might have been less accurate had I done the Venus
Genetrix. Venus busts like this one have been used for many garden decorations and household
decorations in general.
The sculpture I chose to recreate is a bust of Venus. Venus is the goddessof love, prosperity, fertility,
victory, and beauty. Her greek form is Aphrodite.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was actually hard in this way not to find Greek artwork, but since Venus is a Roman goddess,
this was a good choice for me. The Romans didn t believe that a recreation of a work of art was
any less valuable than the first piece of art. We disagree with this today, but they added slight
modifications to their recreations. Roman art liked to recreate Greek art with those slight
modifications, like recreating bronzes (some of which are now lost) in marble. Some variations
could be something other than medium, though. Sometimes the purpose was to add a bit of
humor! This added a lot of Roman to Greek art, which was originally somber and serious. The
Romans used a variety of media in their artwork. Some include marble, painting, mosaic, gems,
silver and bronze work, terracottas, and more! The original bust that I chose to recreate is made of
reconstituted resin, but I chose air dry clay to finish faster and to have a close model to the original
bust.
The Roman Republic was also a great year for Roman Art. Lots of art was produced then because of
the many things happening in the republic and in the military. While this idea is not portrayed in
the bust, the equestrian statue honoring a military hero or civic leader was an idea created by the
Romans. Lots of things happened in this period of time, the start and fall of the Roman republic,
and the beginning of the peaceful period of time we know as the Pax

Doctor Ivanich s Flawed In The District Doctor
Physicians are Flawed Heroes: Vulnerable to Human Imperfections The Father of Modern
Medicine, William Osler, once stated The good physician treats the disease; the great physician
treats the patient who has the disease. Could a famous physician be vulnerable as well to a doctor
patient relation? Nobody is impeccable and every person has their unique tragic flaws. It is widely
known that computers calculate mathematical operations much faster than humans because they
only have one job, justly, if physicians were not distracted and focused on one mission only: to
rehabilitate their patient, the job would be completed much quicker and much more efficiently. The

A physician must always do their best at improving the patient s welfare, which can be achieved
efficiently, if they hold all their feelings aside until the patient is fully rehabilitated. The relationship
found in the short story, between Aleksandra Andreyevna and Trifon Ivanich is unethical.
Now...yes, now I can tell you that I thank you with my whole heart...that you are kind and good that
I love you! (Turgenev 133). The affection of the doctor towards the patient might have influenced
the final outcome of her welfare, as it is stated in the story that Aleksandra only took medicine from
the doctor himself. Possibly the doctor gave her too little or too much medicine, the readers will
never know, but the conclusion is the same: the medication did not work. If the doctor was not in
love, perhaps he would have noticed that the prescriptions did not help and maybe he could have
still saved the young woman. Therefore, doctors are defenceless against human sentiments, in Ivan
Turgenev s story, the sentiment is love. This a huge blemish for doctors and physicians, because a
patient s life is endangered whenever a patient s treatment is interspersed with human

Bullet Proof Armor History
History
The first bullet proof armor was invented in 1897 by Korea and the Japan, it was made
of 30 layers of silk, which in that day could stop a black powder bullet it was nicknamed soft
armor. But then when firearms became more powerful it became useless. So a priest from
Chicago made it better by weaving 1.6mm steel plate between four layers of silk, he proved it
was bullet proof by having a man shoot at his chest from 10 paces (25 feet) away with a 44.
Caliber handgun, when it hit him he said he only felt a tap. So the inventor tried to make a life

(Caitlin, 2016)
The vest stops the force of the bullet from hitting you and going into you, it will disperse
the bullets energy across the entire Kevlar panel. If this didn t happen the bullet would hit you
and cause serious damage to the area you were shot in. So that is the reason they make the
entire vest in one piece, so it can take that force of energy from the bullet and make It spread
throughout the vest. (company, 2016)
How effective is it?
Kevlar is what soldiers use today, they can stop some handgun bullets. Such as a 9mm
which has a smaller amount of kinetic energy and a lower velocity, but with a higher caliber
handgun such as a .44 magnum, it has more weight to the bullet which means a larger amount
of kinetic energy and a higher velocity, so you would need up to 30 layers of Kevlar. (Allred,
2015)
How would I improve it?
The improvements I would make would be to make a material that was made of a
strong medal that stops bullets, then I would mix it with a flexible compound to make the

An Organization Known As The Comanche Club
IN 1928, when I was nine, I belonged, with maximum esprit de corps, to an organization known
as the Comanche Club. Every schoolday afternoon at three o clock, twenty five of us Comanches
were picked up by our Chief outside the boys exit of P. S. 165, on 109th Street near Amsterdam
Avenue. We then pushed and punched our way into the Chief s reconverted commercial bus, and
he drove us (according to his financial arrangement with our parents) over to Central Park. The rest
of the afternoon, weather permitting, we played football or soccer or baseball, depending (very
loosely) on the season. Rainy afternoons, the Chief invariably took us either to the Museum of
Natural History or to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Chief always found us.)
In his hours of liberation from the Comanches, the Chief was John Gedsudski, of Staten Island. He
was an extremely shy, gentle young man of twenty two or three, a law student at N.Y.U., and
altogether a very memorable person. I won t attempt to assemble his many achievements and
virtues here. Just in passing, he was an Eagle Scout, an almost All America tackle of 1926, and it
was known that he had been most cordially invited to try out for the New York Giants baseball
team. He was an impartial and unexcitable umpire at all our bedlam sporting events, a master fire
builder and extinguisher, and an expert, uncontemptuous first aid man. Every one of us, from the
smallest hoodlum to the biggest, loved and respected him.
The Chief s physical appearance in 1928 is still clear in my mind. If wishes were inches, all of
us Comanches would have had him a giant in no time. The way things go, though, he was a
stocky five three or four no more than that. His hair was blue black, his hair line extremely low,
his nose was large and fleshy, and his torso was just about as long as his legs were. In his leather
windbreaker, his shoulders were powerful, but narrow and sloping. At the time, however, it seemed
to me that in the Chief all the most photogenic features of Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, and Tom Mix

Use of Force
Use of Force One night, a small town patrol officer stops a car driven by two teenagers. The
officer believes that one of them might be responsible for a string of recent burglaries. The teens
are questioned, and the officer becomes angry at their responses. Over the objections of the
teenagers, both teens are pulled out of the car and shoved around a little. They are both told that
they are under arrest and the officer begins to place handcuffs on them. Both fight back and both
are beaten badly (Bruno, 2010). The question is what legal recourse is available to the families of

Now that I have discussed the use of force and whether it is excessive or not I will begin to
answer the original question posed. Does the family of the teens have any legal recourse available
to them, and if so what is available to them? The answer to this is yes the families definitely have
legal recourse available to them for a number of reasons. The first mistake the officers made was
pulling over the teens because they thought they might have been involved in a recent string of
burglaries. That right there is a violation of the teens Fourth Amendment to have probable cause to
stop them in the first place. Police officers have to have probable cause or more than a hunch to
pull someone over. The scenario said nothing about the car was pulled over because maybe a
witness saw the car leaving the scene of the crime, or maybe the officer had a description of the
suspect and they matched it, he just thought they might be involved. Secondly, they did question
the teens and because of their responses the officer becomes angry and pulls the teens out of the
car. The officer had no right to pull the teens out of the car because of what they said.

The Benefits Of Chewing Gum In School
Hanna M.
Chewing Gum in School
Chewing gum in school is a heated issue because many people think it is rude and messy. Others
argue it can help students focus, improve memory when taking tests, and relax while doing
schoolwork or a test. But the negative argument is misguided because the mess wouldn t happen if
students were allowed to have gum, and therefore throw it away without feeling guilty. Still, the
actual question that should be debated is what the benefits of chewing gum in school are.
As stated earlier, chewing gum can help students focus. Chewing gum is an easy tool students can
use for a potential academic edge, which is what Craig Johnston, Ph.D., the lead researcher and an
instructor in nutrition at the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, says. This
evidence point to the fact that students who chew gum involved fewer breaks, paid more attention
and stayed quiet during more or the class than students who didn t. In another study, Kim Morgan,
the author of the study, states that It s been well established by previous research that chewing gum
can benefit some areas of cognition. In our study we focussed on an audio task that involved short
term memory recall to see if chewing gum would improve concentration; especially in the latter
stages of the task. (Kate Morgan, 2013) The results of the study showed the participants who
chewed gum had quicker reactions and more accurate results. Morgan explained at the end

How The Apollonian Contrasts With The Dionysian
Nietzsche has a different outlook on the world. In World of Ideas, by Lee A. Jacobus, it says;
Nietzsche s task was to explain the polarities, their form of expression, and their effect. (pg. 643)
What is the they you ask? Well, Jacobus says; The Apollonian contrasts with the Dionysian, the
Greek with the barbarian, the dream with the illusion. (pg. 643) There are many more examples, but
I will spare you the long list. An Apollonian is a relation to the rational, ordered, and self disciplined
aspects of human nature. A Dionysian is a relation to the sensual, spontaneous, and emotional
aspects of human nature. This evaluation will compare how the two interpret today s music,
cinematics, and art. First, Apollonians and Dionysians hear music in different ways. Apollonians
are classical in the department. Not exactly the classical genre of music, just older music. See, they

An Apollonian would rather watch a play; a live theatre performance. They find it much more
awe inspiring if they see the performance all in one take. They want to see the actors make the
play a perfection, waiting to see if a mistake is made and if the actors can recover. A
Dionysian,on the other hand, likes movies more. They don t care how many outtakes it had, they
want more. The symbolism, the story, the computer generated images, how a script can be
brought to life. They don t care how, they care how soon. Third, and final, there is a difference in
how Apollonians and Dionysians perceive art. Now, art is hard to understand, and can take many
shapes and forms. Apollonians like the simpler art, the ones that are easy to understand and look at.
If you were to give them a single picture that looked concave and convex at the same time, they
wouldn t appreciate that to much. That is more of a Dionysian outlook. They want the pictures that

Exposing the Real Jasmine Essay examples
The prominent characteristic of postcolonial writing is the incorporation of writing back or
rewriting history into the narrative from the point of view of the colonized. Postcolonial narratives
speak out and attempt to expose the injustices of dominant culture often within their own cultural
system. Within this framework, many female authors give agency to the once silenced female voice
of the colonized. By employing their own narratives, many postcolonial female authors demystify
the prescribed ideologies thrust upon them by a patriarchal culturewhile at the same time expressing
their own sense of loss of cultural identity. Therefore, postcolonial literatureapplies a

In Hindu culture, the sex of a baby is more significant than in western cultures. In eastern
countries, boys are revered and cherished while girls are considered curses since being born a
girl brought to the father the burden of paying a dowry. This type of gender hierarchy is
exemplified in Mukherjee s novel by Jasmine s statement, I had a ruby red choker of a bruise
around my neck and a sapphire fingerprints on my collarbone after my birth. When I revealed this
to Taylor s wife, [...] she missed the point and shrieked at my foremothers [...]. My mother was a
sniper. She wanted to spare me the pain of a dowryless bride (Mukherjee 40). Mukherjee utilizes
Jasmine s nonchalant description of her near death experience coupled with her rationalization to
show that the brutal treatment of baby girls is a common occurrence in her culture. Conversely,
the reaction of Taylor s wife is a metaphor for the western perception that the conduct of Jasmine s
mother is a form of barbarism. By using Jasmine s birth, Mukherjee exposes the realties of a male
patriarchal society in which girls bring considered dilemmas to families.
Many postcolonial writers include how the natives land was overtaken by force and as a result, the
natives had to change their identity to conform to the colonial power. While Jasmine relates her
story about living in the native village Hasnapur, she tells the reader that she is married at the age
of fourteen

Impact Of The Romani Communities And Mainstream Slovak...
The continued disparity between the Romani communities and mainstream Slovak society has been
further highlighted recently by their children now being forced to attend ethnically segregated
mainstream schools and classes. The continued investment in so called container schools can
drastically hinder the Romani children s ability to advance to a higher education. It can also become
a hurdle preventing this community to gain sufficient employment to survive and therefore be a
full contributor to the country they call home. By looking at the Republic of Slovakiaunder the
following headings; political, military, economic, social, infrastructure, information, physical

The history of the Slovak nation began in the eleventh century when it was ruled by Hungary. The
Slovaks ancestors were identified as inhabitants of Upper Hungary (more simply known as The

themselves with the ninth century Slavic kingdom of Great Moravia. In 1918, at the end of World

Fashion Trends And The Fashion Industry
According to Scratchhard.com, the fashion industry generates an average of $20 billion each year.
Fashion designers are the heart of the fashion world. The fashion industry has grown to popularity
by dominating the worldwide economy, media, workplace, and everyday life. Clothing trends have
changed over the last century due to historical events and the evolution of technology. With the gift
of creativity and skill of constructing clothing, fashiondesigners complete a degree in designing,
research past trends, predict future trends, sketch ideas, and oversee production of their designs.
Fashion designers translate their ideas into clothing to sell. The first step of designing is
researching current fashion trends and predicting future trends. Trends determine the success of
the fashion industry. Designers normally choose a speciality to design, such as swimwear, bridal
wear, children s clothing, footwear, and men s wear. Sketching the original design is the next
important step of the design process. Computer Aided Designs are the modern method of
sketching. Next, fabric and embellishments are chosen to correspond with the designer s vision.
Creating custom printed fabric and custom dyeing fabric is common for designers. Most designers
work for large companies which provide the designer with a sewing team. Large apparel companies
usually consist of a team of designers headed by a creative manager. Communicating ideas to the

To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell
Andrew Marvell s poem, To His Coy Mistress is an equally beautiful and provocative piece of
writing. Written in iambic form as a three part proposition addressed to the coy mistress, the
poem is permeated with literary devices such as tone, alliteration, imagery, hyperbole, as well as
similes and metaphors. Marvell s speaker acknowledges the idea that mortality is of little to no
value after death. Through the speaker, Marvell is suggesting that one can avoid the regrets of
not participating in the adventurous aspects of life by seizing the day, thus supporting the Carpe
Diem philosophy. The three part proposition can be identified through the change of the poem s
tone as well as the change of pace. The first argument has a sly and devious tone. Had we but
world enough, and time, This coyness, lady, were no crime. (lines 1 2). The use of the
punctuations, the commas and the period, hinders the pace of the poem. In doing so, it shows the
insignificance of time at that moment. The insignificance of time at the moment is further
emphasized when the speaker tells his mistress that they would sit down, and think which way,
To walk, and pass [their] long love s day (lines 3 4). The use of alliteration creates a carefree
tone, as if the speaker was daydreaming and sighing as he was trying to woo his mistress. Marvell
uses delicate and sublime imagery to flatter the mistress with a seemingly disingenuous
exaggeration of her physical beauty. Because of the unrealistic use

Reverse Discrimination In College Education
There is no question that America still continues to struggle with the issue of racism, but is the
focus shifting towards Caucasians? Reverse discrimination is the favoring of certain individuals
that have belonged to groups that have been discriminated against in the past. This issue has
become more apparent in the U.S. over the past few years, primarily in the school system. This is
an issue because it makes lives harder for one race, the caucasians, by raising standards and
reducing their opportunity. Caucasians in the 21st century have reduced opportunity, and this issue
is the most apparent in the college education system. Colleges are making requirements and

This term has been brought up a few times already, but the true definition is admission policies
that provide equal access to education for groups that have been discriminated against in the past.
There have been a number ways that colleges approach this issue. The first is the quota system, in
which lower standards are set for minorities in order to improve the likelihood of he or she getting
into a particular school. The quota system also involves colleges reserving spots for minorities to
be admitted despite higher qualifications of other races such as Caucasians. There are valid points
made that render affirmative action as necessary and a continued need for this country. The focus of
this statement is centered upon minorities belonging to lesser schools that don t offer enough GPA
boosting classes. This causes problems in the admission process because the minority that applied
may not be as privileged as the Caucasian that applied. Affirmative action opens doors to talented
people who do not belong to a privileged class : (Dr. Smith, Borowski, 5). In summation, supporters
believe that affirmative action aids minorities in giving them opportunities that would have never
been accessible to them. Although many people think that affirmative action is beneficial, it is
actually creating another issue in itself. Affirmative action should not be a thing because it limits
opportunity for Caucasians,

spending most of their time in front of a television. Cartoons are a resource of transmission of

we must. A research carried out in 1998 on the children s television universe in Euskadi (Spain),
said that the average television consumption in children aged from 4 to 12 years reached 162

importance of inner beauty and self love, The critical function of this film is to represent some of
the values that society seems to forget such as indiscrimination, since the film shows a clear
discrimination against the Beast with actions such as trying to end his life just because he does
not have the same physical characteristics as the rest of the people. This discrimination is ended
by Belle (the protagonist), since she is the one who begins to approach to the Beast and tries to get

TQM values are more compatible with higher education than many existing management systems.
In India, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) is entrusted with the responsibility of
regulating, controlling ensuring the quality of management education in the country. The formation
of National Board of Accreditation (NBA) the of workshops that it had organized have contributed
substantially to widespread awareness concern for the quality of management education, but can the
AICTE in all honesty, claim that their approvals would result in quality management education of
global standard.
According to Bill Gates, The chairman of Microsoft Corporation, U.S.A., You need to have
specialized knowledge a skill while maintaining a broad perspective...No one should assume that the
expertise he has today will suffice tomorrow, so a willingness to lean is critical . This statement is
also resulting in a need of quality improvement with the change. So a strong relationship exists
between the principles of Total Quality Management the best practices of management education.

Charles Bukowski Essay
Henry Charles Bukowski writing was influenced by the social, cultural, and economic ambience
of Los Angeles. He left home after his father read some of his stories and went berserk,
destroying his output and throwing his possessions out onto the lawn, a lawn that the young
Bukowski had to mow weekly and would be beaten for if the grass wasn t perfectly cut.
Bukowski was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany. He died on March 9, 1994 in San Pedro,
California. He was a German American poet, novelist, and story writer. Bukowski wrote thousands
of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over sixty books. He had
a bad history with hospitals; he had to undergo three treatments for removal of separate skin cancers,

This allows the reader to slow down and not to speed up like people usually do in poems that
rhyme. When you read his poem it almost makes you want to slow down and read it in a calm
voice, to make you think about each and every word he wrote. The metaphors he uses are
significant because they convey a certain theme and make it clear as to what he is talking about.
The metaphor makes the mood more understandable, because people debate that you should give
second chances but he is saying he rather leave the past untouched. Hence the purpose for this
line, I refuse to let any of my old movies play over and over again for years. The metaphor makes
his tone sound assertive and sure of all the decisions he has made. For example this line let s
people know that he is not like others because of the metaphor and his choice for punctuation
marks I know some people who can watch the same movie more than once. Not me. I selected
this poet out of the thousands even millions of poets there are because I felt like he was the most
realist. Bukowski wrote on about what was going on in the world which he lived in like no other.
He wrote about portrayal of life in general and Los Angeles in particular, his usually self referential,
often angry poetry and prose typically depicts alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals, prostitutes, and
other outcasts. I love the fact that most of the poems I read, he didn t try to rhyme, and he just tried
to tell things as they were.

Race, Ethnicity, And Gender
Race, ethnicity, and gender has been a significant topic discussed throughout many years.
However, it can has its negative cognectation because people feel superior to other people due to
their race, ethnicity, social class and gender. There are many philosophical theories that relate to
these discussion such as white gaze, one drop rule, and five faces of oppression. Moreover, these
theories also applies to my ethnicity which is Dominican. Even though raceis not a real concept, due
to the fact that is a men made belief to categorize people based on their skin color, culture, and
religion, it isolates people into experiencing new things. Thorough history, we have seen how
blacks have been treated due to their skin color. Thus, when it sex, and gender, women are
treated differently due to the idea that women have to be protected and depend on a men to
provide, shelter, and provide money. Takes away the independence of a women, and not until
recently, women are gaining their power and wellness. In my opinion I believe white gaze is a
common practice in America and it affects many people who are not part of the white race. White
race is looking at the world thought the eyes of white person. One way this affects a nonwhite
person is that they face racism, or stereotypes. I chose this idea because I experienced white gaze
here at Canisius College. Once, I was looking for a professor, However she was not there but I left
a message with another professor who was Caucasian.

Meaning Of Friendship By Emerson
Begin... Emerson starts out his friendship essay with a description of how friendships begin.
Emerson says it has nothing to do with putting a little effort. Friendships deal with attraction or
affinity. He asserts what the real meaning in a friendship. Emerson stated once one has a real
meaning in a relationship, it is made worth while. Emersons sees friendships as spontaneous and
unforced. However, in the essay Emersons says that there are two elements that go into the
composition of friendship. The first element is sincerity and the second is tenderness. We can
scarce believe that so much character can subsist in another as to draw us by love , Emerson states.
In that quote he refers to the anxiety of being tender that we feel when we... Show more content on

He says that friendship is an encounter of two, in a thought, in a feeling, . This however, is
simply an image of friendship and perhaps just a simple admiration at a distance. Emerson
continues to say that A new person is to me a great event and hinders me from sleep, . Here, he
shows appreciation of the friend who brings him the best moments in life. However, the essay also
shows Emerson s skepticism about his friend. He says that though he feels proud when his friend
accomplishes something, he overestimates the conscience of his friend. This statement means that
we somewhat idolize our friends and they in turn also idolize us which makes friends unable to
read each other s reality and promise accurately.
Emerson goes ahead to speak of the surprises and joy that comes from friendship. He, however,
surprises us by saying that our friend is more limited than we actually though and that though we
idolize and judge them, there is an infinite remoteness between persons that makes the friendship
limited. Emerson, however, says that friends are for us to grow with and to use to make a stable
and unchanging relationship. Emerson s logic is that as people grow, the souls of friends also
grow making this a sound and valid

Summary Of KeatsOde To A Nightingale
Keats Ode to a Nightingale, can be classified as one of those most well known Odes to ever be
written. Although the poem is a tough lyrical poem to understand, it is as if the poet feels the
pain and bleakness from the day to day repetitiveness of life; therefore, seeks to disappear into
the make believe world of the Nightingale to find relief which eventually leads him to
acknowledgment. While listening to the Nightingale sing, the poet describes Greek and Roman
figures to enhance the feelings he is portraying. The poet described an inconsistent life of
contradictory using the concept of life and death. As well as, representing the struggle of reality
and fantasy achieved through a transformed state of mind. One can see the poet s feelings are
described by words that show the mood of the situation while his thoughts change throughout the
poem. The day to day life of the poet is filled with pain and disappointment. Although the poem
starts out with, My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains (Line 1), momentarily, the poet is
happy because of the singing Nightingale which he describes as, some melodious plot (Line 8);
and it Singest of summer in full throated ease (Line 10). The poet uses musical language to give
the audience the portrayal of how the bird is singing. Quickly, the narrator is filled with agony
because he remembers that life is unpleasant and could be explained in the third stanza, Where
Beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, Or new Love pine at

Rabbit Run Harry s Rabbit
The main protagonist in John Updike s Rabbit, Run, Harry Rabbit Angstrom, struggles at
grappling with the responsibilities expected of him as an adult and losing his youth to a world
who he believes greatly devalues it. Rabbit s reckless sense of youth is what makes it so easy for
him to float in and out of a sort of responsible consciousness; when you are young, little holds you
down except your own self control. Rabbitlacks this sort of grounded ness, he spends much of his
time floating above reality. Rabbit spends a majority of the novel bent on retaining his youth, on
transcending his adult responsibilities and moving throughout the world at a pace that is only set
by himself. His life revolves around no influences but his own, everything and everyone else is
trivial or other . This concept of othering relates almost intrinsically to the concept of youth in
regards to Rabbit; he alienates everyone he comes in contact with, ultimately creating tensions
surrounding his own ability to have empathy for the other , a struggle which is constantly at... Show

Comments about Harry being full of life or still youthful take on heavy weight in the story. They
contradict what Harry thinks of himself, although those around him seem to want to constantly
remind him of his youth. During his last conversation with Mrs. Smith before quitting his job, she
tells him: That s what you have, Harry: life. It s a strange gift and I don t know how we re
supposed to use it but I know it s the only gift we get and it s a good one, (p. 236). It is as if Harry
s fullness of life is what draws people to him, despite his actions which hardly ever seem pure
hearted. When Harry leaves, it is implied that Mrs. Smith will now die, as if Harry carries the
power of life within himself and when he goes away, it is stripped from those he leaves

Americans during this time began to move away from rural and began to colonize cities. Progressive activists at the time sought to eliminate government corruption, increase regulation in business practices, and address and resolve health issues in the work force. Journalists known as muckrakers were catalysts of change by informing the public about prominent issues at the time including, child labor, corruption in government, and unlawful practices acted out by business men. • 7. Comparing The Classical Theory And Psychological... Introduction 126 The classical theory and psychological positivism theory can still be used to conceptualise crime in the 21st century, regardless of the shift in criminological thinking. Both theories offer a unique perspective as to why individuals engage in criminal behaviour, with one suggesting that an individual acts by their own free will to engage in behaviour while the other argues that criminal behaviour is due to internal factors influencing the behaviour. This critique will examine the characteristics and history of each theory before applying the understanding of both theories to the real life crime case of Katherine Knight. Crime is conceptualised as a result of a person acting upon their own free will to engage in the criminal behaviour (SOURCE). However, psychological positivism rejects the notion and instead argues a person who commits crime is engaging in the behaviour due to internal factors that have developed during childhood and adolescences (SOURCE). The difference in understanding can be due to the methods used to approach crime. Psychological positivism utilises a scientific method to theorise about the deviant behaviour in individuals. However, this is often criticised as there is no specific method to measure the internal influences (SOURCE). In contrast, the classical theory ignores the factors that cause individuals to engage in crime, and instead sums the behaviour to be the rational choice of an individual to engage in behaviour that offers the most pleasure for minimal pain ... Baraka depicts the overwhelming strength of nature through action shots of Kuwaiti oil fires and their devastation in the post war state. In the Persian Gulf War of 1991 between Kuwait and Iraq, conflict over oil and petroleum led to catastrophic environmental degradation and consequences. Burning for about 7 months, fires engulfed and towered over the Kuwait landscape as Iraqi forces set over 650 oil wells ablaze. Washed over by poisonous dark smoke, soot, and ash, land combined with oil formed hardened layers of tarcrete, and rain as black as night fell upon the sand. Animals and livestock died as their lungs blackened from the toxic atmosphere, and the water in lakes was replaced with oil. • 15. Venus Bust Analysis For my project, I have recreated a bust of Venus. A bust is a sculpture of a person s head, shoulders, and chest. This allows you to include very intricate details and helps you achieve a goal in realism. There were many sculptures of Venus in ancient Rome, including the Venus Genetrix, meaning Mother Venus in Latin. I chose to create a bust so I could, too, focus on the intricate details, though my version is very small, it might have been less accurate had I done the Venus Genetrix. Venus busts like this one have been used for many garden decorations and household decorations in general. The sculpture I chose to recreate is a bust of Venus. Venus is the goddessof love, prosperity, fertility, victory, and beauty. Her greek form is Aphrodite.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was actually hard in this way not to find Greek artwork, but since Venus is a Roman goddess, this was a good choice for me. The Romans didn t believe that a recreation of a work of art was any less valuable than the first piece of art. We disagree with this today, but they added slight modifications to their recreations. Roman art liked to recreate Greek art with those slight modifications, like recreating bronzes (some of which are now lost) in marble. Some variations could be something other than medium, though. Sometimes the purpose was to add a bit of humor! This added a lot of Roman to Greek art, which was originally somber and serious. The Romans used a variety of media in their artwork. Some include marble, painting, mosaic, gems, silver and bronze work, terracottas, and more! The original bust that I chose to recreate is made of reconstituted resin, but I chose air dry clay to finish faster and to have a close model to the original bust. The Roman Republic was also a great year for Roman Art. Lots of art was produced then because of the many things happening in the republic and in the military. Just in passing, he was an Eagle Scout, an almost All America tackle of 1926, and it was known that he had been most cordially invited to try out for the New York Giants baseball team. He was an impartial and unexcitable umpire at all our bedlam sporting events, a master fire builder and extinguisher, and an expert, uncontemptuous first aid man. Every one of us, from the smallest hoodlum to the biggest, loved and respected him. The Chief s physical appearance in 1928 is still clear in my mind. Does the family of the teens have any legal recourse available to them, and if so what is available to them? The answer to this is yes the families definitely have legal recourse available to them for a number of reasons. The first mistake the officers made was pulling over the teens because they thought they might have been involved in a recent string of burglaries. That right there is a violation of the teens Fourth Amendment to have probable cause to stop them in the first place. Police officers have to have probable cause or more than a hunch to pull someone over. The scenario said nothing about the car was pulled over because maybe a witness saw the car leaving the scene of the crime, or maybe the officer had a description of the suspect and they matched it, he just thought they might be involved. • 27. The Benefits Of Chewing Gum In School Hanna M. Chewing Gum in School Chewing gum in school is a heated issue because many people think it is rude and messy. Others argue it can help students focus, improve memory when taking tests, and relax while doing schoolwork or a test. But the negative argument is misguided because the mess wouldn t happen if students were allowed to have gum, and therefore throw it away without feeling guilty. Still, the actual question that should be debated is what the benefits of chewing gum in school are. As stated earlier, chewing gum can help students focus. Chewing gum is an easy tool students can use for a potential academic edge, which is what Craig Johnston, Ph.D., the lead researcher and an instructor in nutrition at the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, says. This evidence point to the fact that students who chew gum involved fewer breaks, paid more attention and stayed quiet during more or the class than students who didn t. In another study, Kim Morgan, the author of the study, states that It s been well established by previous research that chewing gum can benefit some areas of cognition. In our study we focussed on an audio task that involved short term memory recall to see if chewing gum would improve concentration; especially in the latter stages of the task. Well, Jacobus says; The Apollonian contrasts with the Dionysian, the Greek with the barbarian, the dream with the illusion. (pg. 643) There are many more examples, but I will spare you the long list. An Apollonian is a relation to the rational, ordered, and self disciplined aspects of human nature. A Dionysian is a relation to the sensual, spontaneous, and emotional aspects of human nature. In Hindu culture, the sex of a baby is more significant than in western cultures. In eastern countries, boys are revered and cherished while girls are considered curses since being born a girl brought to the father the burden of paying a dowry. This type of gender hierarchy is exemplified in Mukherjee s novel by Jasmine s statement, I had a ruby red choker of a bruise around my neck and a sapphire fingerprints on my collarbone after my birth. When I revealed this to Taylor s wife, [...] she missed the point and shrieked at my foremothers [...]. My mother was a sniper. She wanted to spare me the pain of a dowryless bride (Mukherjee 40). Mukherjee utilizes Jasmine s nonchalant description of her near death experience coupled with her rationalization to show that the brutal treatment of baby girls is a common occurrence in her culture. Conversely, the reaction of Taylor s wife is a metaphor for the western perception that the conduct of Jasmine s mother is a form of barbarism. By using Jasmine s birth, Mukherjee exposes the realties of a male patriarchal society in which girls bring considered dilemmas to families. • 37. To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell Andrew Marvell s poem, To His Coy Mistress is an equally beautiful and provocative piece of writing. Written in iambic form as a three part proposition addressed to the coy mistress, the poem is permeated with literary devices such as tone, alliteration, imagery, hyperbole, as well as similes and metaphors. Marvell s speaker acknowledges the idea that mortality is of little to no value after death. Through the speaker, Marvell is suggesting that one can avoid the regrets of not participating in the adventurous aspects of life by seizing the day, thus supporting the Carpe Diem philosophy. The three part proposition can be identified through the change of the poem s tone as well as the change of pace. The first argument has a sly and devious tone. Had we but world enough, and time, This coyness, lady, were no crime. (lines 1 2). The use of the punctuations, the commas and the period, hinders the pace of the poem. In doing so, it shows the insignificance of time at that moment. The insignificance of time at the moment is further emphasized when the speaker tells his mistress that they would sit down, and think which way, To walk, and pass [their] long love s day (lines 3 4). The use of alliteration creates a carefree tone, as if the speaker was daydreaming and sighing as he was trying to woo his mistress. Reverse discrimination is the favoring of certain individuals that have belonged to groups that have been discriminated against in the past. The quota system also involves colleges reserving spots for minorities to be admitted despite higher qualifications of other races such as Caucasians. There are valid points made that render affirmative action as necessary and a continued need for this country. The focus of this statement is centered upon minorities belonging to lesser schools that don t offer enough GPA boosting classes. This causes problems in the admission process because the minority that applied may not be as privileged as the Caucasian that applied. Affirmative action opens doors to talented people who do not belong to a privileged class : (Dr. Smith, Borowski, 5). This allows the reader to slow down and not to speed up like people usually do in poems that rhyme. When you read his poem it almost makes you want to slow down and read it in a calm voice, to make you think about each and every word he wrote. The metaphors he uses are significant because they convey a certain theme and make it clear as to what he is talking about. The metaphor makes the mood more understandable, because people debate that you should give second chances but he is saying he rather leave the past untouched. Hence the purpose for this line, I refuse to let any of my old movies play over and over again for years. The metaphor makes his tone sound assertive and sure of all the decisions he has made. For example this line let s people know that he is not like others because of the metaphor and his choice for punctuation marks I know some people who can watch the same movie more than once. Not me. I selected this poet out of the thousands even millions of poets there are because I felt like he was the most realist. Bukowski wrote on about what was going on in the world which he lived in like no other. He wrote about portrayal of life in general and Los Angeles in particular, his usually self referential, often angry poetry and prose typically depicts alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals, prostitutes, and other outcasts. I love the fact that most of the poems I read, he didn t try to rhyme, and he just tried to tell things as they were. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Race, Ethnicity, And Gender Race, ethnicity, and gender has been a significant topic discussed throughout many years. However, it can has its negative cognectation because people feel superior to other people due to their race, ethnicity, social class and gender. There are many philosophical theories that relate to these discussion such as white gaze, one drop rule, and five faces of oppression. Moreover, these theories also applies to my ethnicity which is Dominican. Even though raceis not a real concept, due to the fact that is a men made belief to categorize people based on their skin color, culture, and religion, it isolates people into experiencing new things. Thorough history, we have seen how blacks have been treated due to their skin color. Thus, when it sex, and gender, women are treated differently due to the idea that women have to be protected and depend on a men to provide, shelter, and provide money. Takes away the independence of a women, and not until recently, women are gaining their power and wellness. In my opinion I believe white gaze is a common practice in America and it affects many people who are not part of the white race. White race is looking at the world thought the eyes of white person. One way this affects a nonwhite person is that they face racism, or stereotypes. I chose this idea because I experienced white gaze here at Canisius College. Once, I was looking for a professor, However she was not there but I left a message with another professor who was Caucasian. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This however, is simply an image of friendship and perhaps just a simple admiration at a distance. Emerson continues to say that A new person is to me a great event and hinders me from sleep, . Here, he shows appreciation of the friend who brings him the best moments in life. However, the essay also shows Emerson s skepticism about his friend. He says that though he feels proud when his friend accomplishes something, he overestimates the conscience of his friend. This statement means that we somewhat idolize our friends and they in turn also idolize us which makes friends unable to read each other s reality and promise accurately. Emerson goes ahead to speak of the surprises and joy that comes from friendship. He, however, surprises us by saying that our friend is more limited than we actually though and that though we idolize and judge them, there is an infinite remoteness between persons that makes the friendship limited. Emerson, however, says that friends are for us to grow with and to use to make a stable and unchanging relationship. Emerson s logic is that as people grow, the souls of friends also grow making this a sound and valid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
