Ayurveda had an understanding of diabetes (Madhumeha) even 3500 years ago. Madhumeha was considered one of the 20 types of premehas or excessive urination disorders. Certain foods, lifestyle factors, injuries, and genetic predisposition were seen as causes. Symptoms before full Madhumeha developed included heaviness, liking cool weather, hair loss, and plaque on teeth. Treatment involved cleansing, herbal remedies, minerals/metals, and lifestyle changes like physical activity, diet, sleep, and stress management. Complications could be severe if left untreated, affecting many organs. Prevention through healthy living was seen as most important.
Ayurved is the ancient Indian system of keeping good health. Paradigm of ayurved is distinctly different from that of allopathy. While allopathy focuses on curing diseases at a profit, the central theme of ayurved is good health for all. Allopathy follows an analytical-mechanistic approach. Ayurved is a holistic system that takes every aspect of human living as well as the environment into account. Allopathy is based on the mindset of killing the enemy (in this case - micro-organisms like bacteria etc.). Ayurved emphasises harmony and balance. This Presentation dicusses the paradigm of ayurved and also gives a quick overview of ritucharya - the sytem of living one's life in harmony with the changing seasons.

Ayurveda, the ancient science of life has in store a huge armamentarium of herbs and therapeutic procedures which may benefit patients of arthritis if taken under supervision of qualified and expert personnel.
The concept of pathya apathya w.s.r. to charak samhitabrijeshbhu
Ayurveda has holistic and scientific approach in health management. It emphasizes much more on diet and regimen along with medicines. The diet and regimen which is beneficial to the body and gives the happiness to the mind is known as Pathya and opposite to that is known as Apathya. Most of the health problems develop due to the faulty eating habits and regimen. Ayurveda deals with the pathya vyavastha (planning of diet- dietetics) in a very scientific way. The planning of diet mentioned in our classical literature is very rational and based on certain principles. Lot of importance is given to the diet with regard to its processing, quality, quantity and so on.
Due consideration is given to the atmosphere, psychological condition, status of health, digestion etc. of the person while dealing with this issue. The diet should also be planned according to the age, season, habitat and the preference of the person.

Feeding plate for a newborn with Cleft Palate.pptxSatvikaPrasad
A feeding plate is a prosthetic device used for newborns with a cleft palate to assist in feeding and improve nutrition intake. From a prosthodontic perspective, this plate acts as a barrier between the oral and nasal cavities, facilitating effective sucking and swallowing by providing a more normal anatomical structure. It helps to prevent milk from entering the nasal passage, thereby reducing the risk of aspiration and enhancing the infant's ability to feed efficiently. The feeding plate also aids in the development of the oral muscles and can contribute to better growth and weight gain. Its custom fabrication and proper fitting by a prosthodontist are crucial for ensuring comfort and functionality, as well as for minimizing potential complications. Early intervention with a feeding plate can significantly improve the quality of life for both the infant and the parents.

3. Ancient Indian life sciences Ayurveda is
unique in understanding Madhumeha it is
one among 20 premehas
Loosing excess water from body is ‘Meham’
also known as Prabhoota Mootrata (Excess
urination) feel very week & tired. Ayurveda
says 20 premehas - 10 of vitiated kapha, 6
of vitiated pitta, 4 of vitiated vata. Kapha
originated respond to treatment well. Pitta
originated difficult to treat. Vata
originated mostly impossible to treat.
Madhumeha is last among 20 premehas.
4. When other 19 are neglected Madhumeha is
the result. Susruta mentioned Madhumeha
separately. Madhu means Honey, Meha
means going out of body. Urine contains
more madhura rasa. Hence it is known as
Madhumeha. Reality Madhumeha is
recognised as impossible disease in those
days. Spreads slowly as under current. Those
days Madhumeha is induced in people
through specific food to make them
physically useless especially war prisoners,
thieves as per Kautilya’s arthasastra.
5. This has been clearly mentioned in “Para
bala vighaata adhikaaram” by Kautilya
when they want to cripple a person they use
this technique.
Major causes for Madhumeha:
Food: Ayurveda has given prime
importance to food. Asya sukha (eating all
items in view) virudha ahaaram. Mandaka
Dadhi (Milk not properly turned to curd)
drinking water before food converted to
vitiated kapha leading to Madhumeha.
Alcohol induces Madhumeha – Basavaraj
6. Ayurveda achaarya 14th
Century. Even
Vidaahi Vidhagdha ahaaram means deep
fried food (cooked on micro oven) on fire
induces Madhumeha. Today many consume
deep fried, reheated and cooked foods
which are poisonous. Fast/ Junk/ Bakery/
Tinned/ Refined/ Ready foods are culprits
Vihaara: Swapna sukha means excess day
sleep, Madya seevanam means taking
alcohol, chinta (worry, sorrow) Khrodha
(Angry) sexual inter course after heavy
food induces madhumeha.
7. Abhighata: Injuries to pancreas, head,
stomach, abdomen due to accidents, fights,
war cause Madhumeha. Excess angry,
agony, jealous, over ambitious are mental
reasons for madhumeha. Known as
parooksha abhigaataas. They are 80%
responsible for Madhumeha in modern
society
Sahajam: Genetic causes (vamsaparam
parayam) this is fat related disease (Medo
dhatu vikaaraa) as per Susruta, Charaka,
Beludu iconic Ayurveda acharyaas
8. Poorva roopaalu (Observations): some
specific symptoms are seen before
Madhumeha if one observe keenly.
Recognize take remedial steps
1.Ghangata: Heaviness all over body
2. Seeta priyatvam: Like cool weather,
chilled items
3. Kesaghata: Loosing excess hair.
4. Dantaanam Malaadhyata: Excess
plaque on teeth
9. Susruta said……….
•Gamanat sthanam –like to stop while walking
•Sthant Asanam – when stops feel to sit
•Asanat sayanam – when sit feel to lie down
•Sayanat Swapnam – sleep on lying down
When you observe these symptoms clearly
think of madhumeha. Vagbhata said
“Aswassthyam sarva gatreshu” means
madhumeha cause illness of all body organs
we are clearly seeing health problems from
head to toe these days but they said in
those days itself by keen observations.
10. How it is expressed (Observe keenly)
Sahajam: Genetic originating people are
thin, with debilitated body (Rooksha), poor
appetite (alpaati)
Apatya nimittajam, Doshajam: Due to
apatya (not following dietary restrictions)
vitiated kapha induces Madhumeha. They
eat more, obese, excess appetite, body is
greasy (Snighdam) they like to lie down
Sthoolam: Obese are more prone
Krusam: Dhatu kshaya cause madhumeha
11. Therapy–3Types: viz. Sodhanam, Samanam
& Rasaayanam
Sodhanam: for obese not for thin mainly
virechana karma is done
Samanam: Again 3 types
1.Herbal Remedies: Amalaki, Guduchi,
Kamanchi, Amra pushpa, Nimba,
Guggulu, pashanabhedi are effective.
Satavari rasa with cow milk helps a lot.
Pippallu, Manjista good for madhumeha
12. 2. Rasa oushadas: Silajit, Abhraka, Rajita,
Swarna maakshika bhasmas are vital.
Taamra yogam kept in the mouth over
night reduce blood sugar levels by
morning (Vaktre sandhaarayet nisi
premeha haram) said Vaagbhata
3. Moolika, Rasaoushadaas: Combination of
both work well under expert supervision
like Dhanvatari ghrutam, Sarveswara
rasam for incurable madhumeha
(Madhumehat sudurjayam hanti) says
Baishajeeya Ratnaavali.
13. Harisankara rasam reduces 20 varieties of
premehaas (Pramehaan vimsati hanti…..
Satyam, satyam na samsayaha) pancha
looha rasaayanam is acclaimed as cure for
all types of premehaas & diseases arising
out of it. Umasambhava rasam used for all
ages for premehaas. Dosage depends on
age.
Rasaayanaas: controls premehaas work as
energizers- Sapta vimsati guggulu,
Kaishore guggulu, Bahusoola gudam, Loha
bhasmam, babbulaarista,
14. Kantavallabha rasam. Loha bhasmam is
best among them. Depending on need they
are paakshika, maasika, dwi/ tri maasika
period of therapy will be decided.
Pathyam (Dietary control)
Aahaara- old rice (pounded) this works like
medicine. Wheat, onions, takram means
thick butter milk- (1 portion water, 3
portions curd) chanaka (chana) Tikta
saakam (bitter vegetables) are best drink
little water in between while eating.
Vihaara: Life style is important.
15. Padatra rahito munivaratanaha
(walking without chappals like muni -
Accupressure) Yojanaanam satam yatat
(walking) khametwa salilaasayava
(digging wells) physical activity.
Graamaika raastram bhaikshwaati
(door to door beggary) indicates burning
the calories putting in has to stay only for
1 night in 1 village shows the importance
of active life. Mitaahaaram, sramaika
jeevanam is the fundamental.
16. Maadhuryaschya tano ataha said Susruta,
Vaagbhata confirmed this means body
becomes maadhuryaa means blood glucose
levels increase.
Apathyam (Avoid):
Avoid Eating: Avoid sweets (remember
sweets don’t cause diabetes after eating
them if calories are not burnt one will get
diabetes)
Avoid extremes of climate
Avoid sexual inter course after heavy dine
17. Complications of Diabetes: if not treated
properly encounter many complications.
Excess thirst, fever, putimamsa (gangrene)
pidakalu (boils) hrutsoola (heart attacks)
eye problems, numbness, poor blood
circulation, loss of sensation, skin infections,
loss of libido please understand it is not easy
to handle just with medicines. Lifestyle
covering food, exercise, sleep, attitude,
relations + right therapy help you to lead
near normal life. Prevention is always
better then cure.
