1) Ayurveda views obesity as an excess of meda dhatu caused by improper diet, lack of exercise, and genetic factors.
2) The management of obesity in Ayurveda focuses on reducing kapha and medas through a pathya aahar (diet), vihara (lifestyle), and use of lekhaniya (scraping) herbs.
3) Key aspects of treatment include following a low-fat, low-sweet diet; regular exercise; use of herbs with scraping and fat-reducing qualities like those in the lekhaniya dashamani group; and addressing underlying imbalances through a comprehensive lifestyle and herbal regimen.
A Case Study on Ayurvedic Management of Cervical Spondylosis W.S.R to Manyast...YogeshIJTSRD
Cervical spondylosis is a very common condition seen now a day. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 adults will have some degree of cervical spondylosis. Degeneration of cervical vertebrae is mostly seen in elderly people but now a days due to over use of computer technology most of people develop cervical spondylosis. In the present case study, a diagnosed case of cervical spondylosis has been included for its ayurvedic management. Chief complains were pain and stiffness over the neck since 6 months and pain over the neck was radiating towards the right arm. Externally Manyabasti and Patra pottali sweda was given and during this procedure ayurvedic medicine also given. Different parameters have been assessed before and after the treatment schedule. There is a complete relief in the parameters like neck pain and stiffness whereas the parameters like pain in arm and vertigo has also shown significant improvement. The concept of pathya apathya w.s.r. to charak samhitabrijeshbhu
Ayurveda has holistic and scientific approach in health management. It emphasizes much more on diet and regimen along with medicines. The diet and regimen which is beneficial to the body and gives the happiness to the mind is known as Pathya and opposite to that is known as Apathya. Most of the health problems develop due to the faulty eating habits and regimen. Ayurveda deals with the pathya vyavastha (planning of diet- dietetics) in a very scientific way. The planning of diet mentioned in our classical literature is very rational and based on certain principles. Lot of importance is given to the diet with regard to its processing, quality, quantity and so on.
Due consideration is given to the atmosphere, psychological condition, status of health, digestion etc. of the person while dealing with this issue. The diet should also be planned according to the age, season, habitat and the preference of the person.

Ayurvedic management of arthritis by dr. pradeep duaduadrpradeep
Ayurveda, the ancient science of life has in store a huge armamentarium of herbs and therapeutic procedures which may benefit patients of arthritis if taken under supervision of qualified and expert personnel.
Ayurveda is the oldest medical literature in the world, originating from the Indus Valley civilization. But it is as old as creation.
Rich in literature with its own philosophy, path physiology, diagnosis, and treatment
More importance to prevention than treatment
Very Personalized medicine, health-centric and holistic approach
Ayurveda is in every house, and we used in every day as spices without our knowledge.
80% of world’s population used Traditional medicine directly and indirectly. Not developed as desired due to politics, lack of awareness, modernization and research. It is all about in Ayurveda

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

3. INTRODUCTION
Acharya Charak has mentioned ‘ Atisthool’ as one of the ‘Astonindita
purusha’ in 23rd chapter of sootrasthan in Astonindita adhaya of
‘Charak samhita’ Acharya charak has described sthoola as
maodaomaaMsaait vaRQd %vaaccalaaisfgaudstna: È
Ayaqaaopcaao%saahao narao|it sqaUla ]cyato ÈÈ ca.saU.23.9
The one in whom , due to excessive increase of Mansa and Meda
dhatu, the buttocks , abdomen and breast become pendulous and
strength is rendered disproportionate with the physical growth, such
person is called as ‘sthoola’
Sthoola are deficient in longevity , have impaired body movements ,
they perform less sexual activity, have less semen quantity. They are
weak. Emit foul smell. They have excessive sweating , hunger and
thirst.
5. CAUSES OF OBESITY IN AYURVEDA
Dietary causes -
Over eating
Frequent food intake before digestion
of a previous meal.
Kapha increasing food
Excessive consumption of sweet food,
heavy food, cold diet, unctuous food-
dairy products like cheese cream,
butter, ice cream, yogurt
Excessive use of oily food – fried food,
grilled food, fast food
Excessive use of meat
Usage of new grains
Usage of sugarcanes jaggery preparations
Excessive use of rice, wheat, black gram
Drinking water after food intake
Life style and Behavior
Sedentary life style, Lack of physical exercise,
excessive sleep, sleeping during day especially
soon after meal, lack of sexual life
Mental cause
Lack of thinking, anxiety or anger, cheerful mind
Genetic - ‘Beeja Swabhavat’
6. CAUSES OF OBESITY ACCORDING TO MODERN SCIENCE
Environmental factors –Life style, behavior, Diet, physical activity.
Cultural Factors – Type of food, way of cooking is different.
Socio -economic factors - poverty and a lower level of education.
Genetic factors play a key role, but their mechanism remains unknown.
Mental and Emotional influences on Eating patterns
Diseases like Hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome, polycystic ovarian
syndrome.
Drugs like steroids, anti-depressants.
7. Etiopathogenesis of Obesity according to Ayurveda
Consumption of excessive and constant intake of heavy, sweet, cooling and
unctuous food before previous meal is digested creates undigested ahar rasa
(Ama).
This undigested ahar rasa produces Agnimandya in medodhatvagni in
medovaha strotsasa.
Medodhatu does not get digested and there is vitiated aggravation of
medodhatu.
Due to obstruction of Vikrit meda, vayu changes its normal direction & enters
into kostha and stimulates Jathragni.
This stimulation of digestive power gets the patient to digest and absorbs
food quickly.
Hence patient consumes more food which leads to excessive enlargement of
meda dhatu.
Other successive dhatus like Asthi, Majja, Shukra do not get nourished
properly.
This improper nourishment of dhatus lead to low vitality and ultimately the
patient dies due to severe diseases.
8. Flowchart of samprapti of Obesity
Undigested ahar rasa (Ama)
Agnimandya
Medovriddhi
Ill nourishment of further dhatus
Low immunity, various life style disorders
Uncontrolled obesity leading to Death
10. AYURVEDA AAHAR IN OBESITY
TO BE CONSUMED – Food with qualities such as bitter, pungent, astringent
taste, dry, hot, sharp, having scraping property shall be used.
Whole grains – Barley, whole oats.
Vegetables – Long gourd, Spinach and mustard greens, egg plant, cabbage,
carrot, cauliflower
Pulses or dried beans – Lentils, Moong dal, tuvar dal, masoor dal, horse gram,
chick peas.
Fruits – Apples, Pears, Pineapple.
Old Honey
Spices – Fenugreek, turmeric, cumin, mustard, asafetida, curry leaves, ginger,
black pepper, clove , cinnamon.
11. DIET TO AVOID
Avoid sweet, sour, salty and oily food as it aggravates Kapha and Medas.
Sweet foods including not just sugar but also rice, wheat, pasta, breads and
milk products.
Cakes, cookies, pastries, chocolates.
Meat especially red meat, fried and grilled food.
Avoid left over / stale food.
Avoid packaged foods, pizza, burger, French fries, doughnuts etc.
12. AVOID INCOMPATIBLE COMBINATIONS OF FOOD ( VIRUDDHAHAR )
Milk with the following items –
Fish, meat, curd, sour fruits, bread containing yeast, yoghurt, eggs, sour
fruits, melons, hot drinks etc.
AVOID TAMASIK FOOD
Tamasik foods are those which dull the mind and bring about inertia,
laziness, disorientation and depression.
Excessive intake of fats, oils, sugars, heavy and left over food are tamasik in
nature.
Foods that have been processed, canned or frozen food, beef, fish, eggs,
cold buffalo milk are also tamasik in nature.
13. AYURVEDA LIFE STYLE IN (OBESITY)
T0 BE DONE –
Exercise.

ववभक्तघनगात्रत्वं व््ा्ार्िुपजा्ते ॥ ( चरक सूत्रस्थान )
Exercise leads to increase in stamina, appetite. It is
beneficial in reducing excessive accumulation of Medas
dhatu which is particularly useful in obesity.
Walking, Jogging, Swimming, running, or rowing.
Aerobic exercises.
Stationary Cycling/Bicycling.
Trekking, mountain climbing.
“Stop Incorrect Dieting and Start Moving”
14. ROLE OF YOGA IN OBESITY

15. Aushadha
Ayurvedic perspective in management of Obesity
‘Lekhan’ is a process which is useful in management of Obesity. According to
Acharya Charak ‘Lekhan’ means,
‘laoKnaM p%tlaIkrNa È ca.saU.4.ca.d
laoKnaM kfmaodsaao: È ca.saU.4
Lekhan means scraping of dhatus and malas after initial absorption of kleda
from them.
Especially kapha and meda dhatu are removed by lekhan process.
Sharangdhar samhita has also given a detailed definition of Lekhan karma.
QaatUnmalaanvaa dohsya ivaSaaoYyaaollaoKyaocca yat È
laoKnaM tVaqaa xaaOd`M naIr]YNaM vacaa yavaa: È Saa.saM.pUva- KMD A.4
It means Lekhana is a process through which abnormally accumulated dhatus
are removed.
16. ‘Lekhaniya dashemani’ is one of the groups of ten dravyas which
is useful in management of obesity.
In the 4th chapter of charak samhita in sootrasthan, Acharya
charak has mentioned ‘Lekhaniya dashemani’ gana.

Musta, Kustha, Haridra, Daruharidra, Vacha, Ativisha, Katurohini,
Chitrak, Chirabilva and Hemvati vacha are the ten dravyas of
Lekhaniya dashemani gana.
17. All the dravyas of lekhaniya dashemani generally have Tikta, katu
rasa, Ushna Veerya, Katu Vipaka and Laghu, ruksha guna.
Hence they have specific action on dusta meda and kapha.
All the dravyas scrap accumulated meda by their laghu and ruksha
gunas.
Their Ushna Veerya removes obstruction of meda.
It eliminates kleda from meda dhatu due to its katu , tikta rasa,
which leads to proper nourishment of successive dhatus and
improve immunity & the patient gets healthy life.
18. Action of Lekhaniya dashemani dravyas
Amapachan ( Due to Tikta, Katu rasa)
Agnivardhan ( As they have Ushna Veerya)
Scraping of dushta meda ( Due to laghu, ruksha gunas)
Removes obstruction in strotasas (by Ushna Veerya) leading to
proper nourishment of dhatus
Improves immunity and imparts
Healthy life
19. CONCLUSION -
कार्श्मर्ेव वरं स्थौल््ात् न दि स्थूलस्् भेषजर्् ।
Obesity is described as ‘Kruchrasadhya’ vyadhi in Ayurveda. It implies
that it is difficult to treat.
However, with appropriate overall management of diet, exercise and
medication, obesity can be reduced to a considerable level.
To summarize the topic, it can be said that the “Cumulative
effect of Aahar-Vihar-Aushadha executed effectively
shall lead to successful management of obesity”.
