The leaf is made up of several layers that carry out important functions. The cuticle acts as a waxy protective coating to prevent water loss. Below this is the upper epidermis, which provides physical protection to the leaf. Chloroplasts containing chlorophyll give leaves their green color and perform photosynthesis. Stomata open and close to regulate the intake of carbon dioxide and release of oxygen during photosynthesis. Leaves come in many shapes and sizes between different plant species.
