Ternopil was established in 1540 by Grand Crown Hetman Jan Amor Tarnowski. It received Magdeburg rights and was part of Poland from 1540-1772 and 1920-1939. Ternopil was also part of Austrian-Hungary from 1772-1918 and served as the capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic from 1918-1919 before becoming part of the USSR and later independent Ukraine.
