I.  Brief Introduction to Wei River
Bird’s  eye View  on Wei River
Wei River, important, both in ancient and present time The largest tributary of the Yellow River~~ length :  818  kilometer ; catchment area :  135,000  km 2 ; Shaanxi Province takes  67,100   km 2  catchment area .
Wei River, one of the cradles of the Chinese Civilization The capitals of ancient dynasties were  situated along the Wei River from  2070 BC ; In relation to  “Silk Road”  of antiquity.
Wei River, one of the mainstays of the economic development of Shaanxi In Shaanxi Province, the Wei River basin covers: 61%  of total population; 56%  of total farmland; 72%  of total irrigation area;  68%  of total agricultural output; 80%  of Shaanxi Province’s GDP.
Challenges  to Wei River in the contemporary era Water shortage; Decrease of water inflows;  Vulnerable eco-environment; Water pollution; River channel siltation.

The Wei River Forum in 2009 Theme: Water Environment Management planning of key projects  and five-year plan;  Pollutants control for an ecological Wei River; More water division projects for more bearing capacity;  Integrated management for less river siltation/flood disasters and better disaster control capacity.

Success of the Wei River Fora What we achieved mainly:  Raise public awareness for caring the Wei River;  Promote the implementation of IWRM in the Wei River Basin; Influencing policy/decision-makers.

Success of the Wei River Fora What we influenced:  The local government approves the “Plan of the Wei River Basin Management”;  The implementation of “Yellow River Water Regulation Rules” has been promoted ; The local government better practices responsibilities on pollution control.

Two more Wei River Fora Focus on:  Strategies and measures for disaster control ;  Better promotion and development of more related regulations and systems in integrated management of Wei River Basin.
