Week of: Monday, August 23, 2010
Welcome to Week 2 at Sci Tech Academy! Leslie and I would like to thank you for a good start to what will surely be an amazing school year for our students. Thanks for your continued hard work and dedication to the opening of our new school. I’m sure that all of you will agree that last week was filled with both excitement and at times frustration. Starting a new charter school is VERY different from taking over an existing school-especially when the school is one of the lowest performing schools in our city. As we march toward week 2, know that we will win! In five days I have seen such amazing progress in your classrooms. Our kiddos are soaking up everything you’re exposing them to. Of course there will be a few hold-outs, but they too will soon begin to buy into the culture we are working on establishing. Leslie, Maya, and I will continue to work out the kinks until we’ve got smooth and timely transitions from public spaces, everyone adhering to the daily academic schedule, and teachers working together for the good of students.
This week we are still hard at work on culture! Be sure your students know the procedures and you are still very much in sweat the small stuff mode. Remember: Everyone in touch and hold, all shirts are tucked in after restroom use, and transitions are taking less time this week. You will see CMO staff, school leaders and deans from 3-5 and 6-8 in your classrooms next week with the ReNEW Culture Rubric.
Take-In
The orange cones are working! Remember: we need you outside no later than 7:40AM. Use this time to take roll on the soft copies provided by Lindsay. Co-teachers will remain behind as they will be setting up breakfast. Special shout out to Brittney and Alex for seeing the bigger picture: smooth and timely transitions! The job of breakfast set-up isn’t the most exciting but it is VERY important! Thanks for being super positive about it and ensuring that when kids come in—all is ready to go! Brittney has it down to a science: sets up breakfast for her two co-teachers and Riley. She then collects the LW folders for her two teachers and begins to check all LW folders. This is huge because kids walk into a classroom that has breakfast already set up on each individual desk and the teachers are able to focus on preparing for MM, Calendar Math, or Show and Tell. Remember: There is no I in TEAM!
Expectations: Take at least 85% of your roll outside, ensure lines are straight and students are sitting in criss-cross applesauce, do not allow students to roam around the K-2 area. I will monitor the gate behind us and Leslie will monitor the buses. We will try to keep an eye out in both our respective areas and the area where kids are seated. Remember: as you are individually greeting and welcoming your students-keep that third “teacher eye” out for the rest of your line.
Breakfast:
Please remember to bring your carts to the cafeteria before leaving for the day. We want to ensure that we are not wasting precious AM time on the transporting of carts. This week we will continue to monitor the time spent on breakfast. I had an opportunity to visit and observe a few classrooms during breakfast on Friday and found them to be done by 8:16, 8:18, and 8:20! The secret to their success is breakfast being set-up by the time the kids walked in. So, students walk in, drop off their backpacks, and begin eating. Of course the devil is always in the details: late bus arrivals, tardy students, and navigating the school yard with 300+ students from 3-8th grades. Despite all of the issues outside of our control—we can get it done. Friday was proof that we can be ready to go by 8:20 when we focus on the things we can control. This week we will continue to monitor breakfast. We will be inspecting the following: set-up, time spent, transitions/procedures, and classroom climate during breakfast.
Expectations: ALL carts brought to the cafeteria at the end of the day. Please ensure that you are moving toward a silent breakfast by mid-week, students know when to throw away uneaten food/trash (is it organized or random), and most or all kids being done by 8:20.
Rosters
This week we are anticipating more new students as we are still enrolling K-2 students. I am assigning new students based on the current number of students on your rosters. This weekend Lindsay deleted our no shows as some of these have decided to attend other schools. Thanks for being flexible with newly enrolled students as they transition into your classroom culture.
Expectations: Please continue to add new students to the end of your roster and have your rosters ready for pick-up by 9:15 AM
Recess and Lunch
Well, it’s much better! Thank you for your flexibility (yet again) with the major change to the original schedule where lunch was first and then recess. I think we’ve realized that it makes more sense to have recess first and then a quiet lunch. Initially, the cafeteria staff requested more time to prepare for K-2-- so that was the reason for the in-the-minute change. Believe me, it is still not where we want it to be, but having more people has helped out tremendously. We want you to enjoy your 40 minutes of peace! Our goal is to have the right mix of folks in the right areas for next week. Special thanks to the Kinder TA’s for assisting with recess and lunch duties and extra special thanks to Lindsay and Lisbeth for their presence and assistance during recess and lunch.
Expectations: Please strictly adhere to the times for both recess and lunch as we are sharing the cafeteria with 3-5 and 6-8. FYI-Kindergarten lunch merges into 3-5 lunch. That’s just the way it is-and it’s working well. 2nd grade lunch could potentially merge with 6-8 grade lunch if we are not out by the designated time. I have attached a copy of the recess/lunch schedule to ensure we are all on the same page.
Possible kink: On Friday cafeteria staff requested that we use 1 side of the cafeteria. This may alter the seating. Will keep you posted.
Dismissal
This week begins 4:30 dismissal. We (K-2 Team) will be assisting with dismissal for the remainder of the week to ensure that all of our students are placed on the correct bus. I am asking all of you to report to your classrooms by 3:50 pm to assist the ED teachers with dismissal. This will be a bit trickier because of the walkers and parent pick-ups in Kindergarten. Last week the TA’s were responsible for Kinder walkers and parent-pickups. This week they will be working ED.
Expectations: Please create a roster of your students and how they get home. Please email to me no later than Monday at 12:45. I can make copies for the ED teachers. You will also need to report to your classrooms by 3:50 to assist ED teacher with afterschool dismissal.
Example:
Teacher:Kelli CharlesGrade: 1st Grade
Alicia AndersonBus – Route 3Markeshia BrownWalkerKinitra CouzinBus –Route 6Roland DonaldsonParent Pick-upJamie FrancisBus – Route 9
Explosive behavior
This week we noticed that several of our K-2 students are acting out in ways we would prefer them not to. We have created a time-out room for explosive behaviors (fighting, acting out by throwing objects in the classroom, hitting and/or biting teacher/students). Basically, if a student is a danger to him/herself, you, or students—then we want to remove them as soon as possible. If you are in need of a student being removed for any of these reasons, you should contact Leslie, Officer Tim, or I. Please see below for a current list of numbers.
Leslie 504.813.9471 Kelli 713.405.9344 Tim 504. 259. 9255
We have an additional TA (Ms. Washington) who will assist with the Time Out Room for now. After September we will not have the additional TA and our Kinder TA’s may be replaced with AmeriCorp. Once a student arrives we will document the following information: student’s name, teacher’s name, incident, and the amount of time the student will remain in the room. The dean of students or I will make contact or attempt to make contact with a parent each time a student is placed in the Time Out Room. Please begin making packets of review work for students who may be placed in the Time Out Room. We will always try to get the parent in to make them aware of the issue and extend a hand in creating a positive home-school relationship. YOU will work on an agreement with the student and parent regarding the terms for re-entering the classroom if this is a classroom issue. Leslie and I will work on agreements for the following: fighting, profanity directed toward an adult and/or students, offensive language and gestures, harassment based on race, national origin, sexual orientation, age, religion or disability.
We will make parental contact and attempt to schedule a conference. So far we have been pretty successful with getting parents in and Leslie held her first detention on Friday. She drove the student home and was able to conference with his mother. One of our first steps should always be to make the parent(s) aware of the behavior and issues as soon as possible. Yes, even before putting students on Check In / Check Out.
This newly created room is not ISS and we do hope to transition students back into the classroom after he/she has cooled off. If a student is involved in a fight we will keep students in the Time Out room for the remainder of the school day. Our very first PD session will be structured around The Guided Discipline Approach. As you can see, your classroom behavior management plans are working for the majority of your students—as it should. Guided Discipline is about supporting students to make more responsible choices, learn more skillful behaviors, and develop greater personal efficacy.
I’m going to say what many of you are feeling and thinking. This is hard! It is for the high school principal turned Early Childhood school leader with 13 years of experience. Can we do it? We have confidence in each of you—and we know that things can only continue to get better!
So what are we doing from 3:00 -4:30?
August 23, 2010 – October 1, 2010
,[object Object],Phoenix Bucks!
Thanks Thom for designing our bucks. I have a list of items for the school store from Amy. I will begin printing them on Monday morning. So please introduce them to your students on Monday. We can begin handing them out soon. During your GLT meeting on Monday- come to consensus on how students will earn them.
Friday Joy AKA Celebration
Popsicles and dancing were a huge success! Please coordinate Friday Joy in grade level team meetings. Please let us know by Tuesday eve what you want. I’d love to see a “Chant Off” and singing of feel good songs.
Why we do this work?
Did you know?
,[object Object]
