7. Touch and Hold consistency—Uniforms
Please make note of students who do not have/wear the official ReNEW uniform. I will have letters for you on Tuesday to send out to parents reminding them of the uniform expectations for K-2.
Extended Day
This week we will continue to assist with Extended Day (ED). Thanks for your assistance with the final week of ED! Co-teachers and core teachers working ED will be compensated $30.00/hour. Teachers, please email me if you are interested in working from 3:00-4:30. Joey and Dwight WILL need co-teachers for sure to assist with ED, and core teachers are needed also. After Labor Day we will transition to a new schedule that will incorporate enrichment during the day. Maya would like your input on the proposed schedule in the coming days.
If you are not working ED this week, please continue to take full advantage of the 3-4:30 block of time for planning with members of your team (if possible) and/or individually. This is not ideal, and I assure you that we will adhere to our planning and PD schedule upon return from the Labor Day Holiday.
Recess and Lunch
Please find attached a copy of the recess and lunch schedule for grades K-2. We are doing a great job with getting kids to recess on time and to the cafeteria for lunch on time (from the playground). However, we are having issues with transitions from the cafeteria to the classrooms. Please ensure you are arriving on time to pick up your students, and in turn we will ensure that kids are finished with lunch, trays are dumped, and students are ready to transition upon your arrival.
Expectation: Your students must be ready to exit the cafeteria within 2 minutes or less of your arrival. Please limit “line checks”. Middle school has lunch at 12:45 and we must allow the cafeteria staff enough time to clean between K-2 and 6-8 lunch times.
Dismissal
We (K-2 Team) will continue to assist with dismissal for the remainder of the week to ensure that all of our students are placed on the correct bus.
Expectation: Report to your class by 3:50 PM to assist with dismissal
Parents
Please reach out to Leslie and I when you are requesting parent conferences. We are encouraging you to reach out to all parents—especially the parents of students who are exhibiting challenging behaviors.
Culture Club
Please email Leslie if you are interested in serving on the School Culture Committee. This committee will assist with grade level and school wide Friday Joy (Celebration). We are looking for a representative from each grade level and at least 1 co-teacher. Friday Joy activities should be structured and well-planned. Leslie and I will coordinate the school store and 1 monthly school-wide Friday Joy activity.
Expectation: Friday Joy will be coordinated by grade level.
Lesson Planning and Feedback
*sigh* Anticipate changes! I am looking forward to the new schedule upon our return from Labor Day as we have lots to do regarding our current system of lesson plans and online feedback. We will use two of the five days for planning. That is my unwavering commitment to you. I think the only way we will solve our lesson planning issues is through talking them through, internalizing, and getting input from everyone.
Time Out Room
Please see the attached Time Out Room Tracker for the week of August 23, 2010. I have also attached the document from the revised Student Handbooks regarding behaviors that warrant an administrator. We will be conducting check-ins with teachers and co-teachers to assess your needs with PD around classroom management.
Team, in all honesty –the best teachers BUILD RELATIONSHIPS with their students and regard their classrooms and students as a “family” and/or “team”. How are you investing your students through our school-wide goals and your classroom goals? Are you using positive narration/reinforcement consistently and constantly as opposed to constantly calling out individual students and behaviors? Remember—they get a ton of the negative stuff outside of sci-tech. Let your classroom be a place of warmth, love, second, third, fourth, fifth, and even sixth chances—don’t get it twisted-there must be clear procedures and expectations but above all they NEED to know you care. I know you do—your hard work shows it each and every day. Expect a revised discipline protocol to use in addition to your Behavior Management Plan you developed during PD and targeted PD on classroom management and dealing with Tier 2 and Tier 3 students.
Expectation: Commit to using your behavior management tracker consistently this week. Begin each day this week with activities from Leslie’s Responsive Classroom session/Morning Meeting. Remember: The chart will work for 90 % of your students.
New Schools for New Orleans (NSNO) School Review
NSNO will be conducting a whole school review September 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. This will include extensive observations of classrooms, interviews with teachers, leaders, and CMO Staff.
What I know for sure…
It doesn’t feel good right now, but we are doing good work. In the words of one of our most beloved students ---
You can do it!
