Analyze Learners
General Characteristics
This lesson plan is designed for fourth grade students to become familiar with West
Virginia History. The students vary in age from 9 to 10 years. There are 8 girls and
11 boys in the class. 17 of the students are West Virginia natives. There is 1 deaf
student. Almost all of the students are from poor socioeconomic environments.
Specific Entry Competencies
All students are aware of the state they live in and the capitol. None of them know
what county they live in or what a state symbol is. The majority of the students have
no knowledge of West Virginia history at all.
Learning Styles
The students need to constantly be hands on in order to keep their full attention.
There are a few students who are disruptive and have a difficult staying on task
without constant reminder. The students lose interest quickly when reading from
their textbooks. The students should be tested orally because they do not test well
on written assessments.
State Objectives
Learning Outcomes
The main objective for this lesson plan is for all students to become familiar with
West Virginia history. They should be able to explain how West Virginia became a
state, identify the surrounding states, and recognize state symbols. Students should
be able to do this by day 5 with 100% accuracy.
Conditions of Performance
The students will be required to participate in a Smart Board activity, which will
consist of a blank outlined map of West Virginia and a bank of pictures of the
remaining 49 states. They will be expected to place West Virginia’s surrounding
states in their correct location.
Degree of Acceptable Performance
Students should be able to do this by the end of the day with 100% accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Methods
The method chosen for this method is small group instruction. Students will be
divided evenly into small groups in order for all to be engaged during the entire
lesson. Students will take turns at individual stations. Since only one student can
complete the Smart Board activity at once, other stations need to be available so
students can stay on task.
Media
The media that is required for this lesson is the Smart Board, computers, and the
software Photoshop. Photoshop will be an option to use at one of the centers.
Groups have the opportunity to explore Photoshop by creating a digital image. If
students chose to use Photoshop they will be asked to group West Virginia and it’s
surrounding states into one picture. Students also have the option to use Facebook
for a center. If they choose to use Facebook, they will be required to create a page
for West Virginia. In the bio section, they would be required to list the surrounding
states. Pictures of West Virginia and recommended to be included as well.
Materials
The materials needed for this lesson are scissors, glue, colored construction
paperand handouts with all 50 states. Students will use these materials for a
specific center. They will be required to cut out the surrounding states of West
Virginia and glue them around West Virginia onto a piece of colored construction
paper.
Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials
The teacher will preview the Smart Board activity to make sure that it is working
properly before incorporating it into the lesson plan. Also, he or she will confirm
that the software Photoshop is available for use on all of the computers. The teacher
will also make sure that all glue sticks are ready for use.
Prepare the Materials and Environment
The teacher will have the Smart Board activity already loaded and ready for use.
The materials needed for the centers will be placed onto the desks. The teacher will
have the desks arranged in smalls groups before the class starts.
Provide the Learning Experience
Students will be given the opportunity to learn the information in a variety of
different ways. They will be able, as a group, to choose the activities that they
utilize. Their choices will range from worksheets, Photoshop, Facebook, or the
Smart Board activity. However, all students must complete the Smart Board activity
for means of assessment before the end of the day.
Require Learner Participation
All students will be required to participate in the activities that their group
unanimously chooses to work on.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will be assessed by their successful completion of the Smart Board activity
(which is to be completed individually).
