Prenatal Exposure To Endocrine Disruptors And Its Impact On Adult Onset Disorders
Endocrine Disruptors and their impact on Adult onset disorders is a document about endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and their effects on human and animal health. It discusses how EDCs are used in plastics, fertilizers, and other products but do not decompose easily and contaminate the environment. EDCs can negatively impact both animal and human health and studying their health effects provides a model for the "one health" approach that addresses social, environmental, business, and political factors related to environmental contaminants.

- #3 Dr. Lou Anna Simon, President of Michigan State University has recognized the value of developing the concept of “One health” and through her “boldness by design” initiative promotes the integration of various disciplines such as Environmental health, Human health, Animal health, food and water safety and communication to address global Health issues. In this symposium, we will be focusing on three main areas, Environmental safety, Human and animal health.
- #4 Plastics have become an integral part of our lives. They are cheap, moldable, durable and have a wide range of uses from medical equipment to toys to shopping bags. They cannot decompose easily and therefore persist in the environment. Several chemicals are used for the synthesis of plastics and many of them are endocrine disruptors. Epidemiological studies on the use of plastics and the prevalence of non-communicable diseases indicate that
- #5 Exposure to these EDCs is a serious One health issue. In developing nations, where disposal of plastics is not well regulated, we have cows and sheep grazing on these plastics. This gives them indigestion, but since they are broken down to a certain extent in the rumen, there are greater chances for EDCs to be liberated and enter the circulation contaminating meat and milk. Although humans are exposed to BPA and DEHP through several routes, consumption of contaminated meat and milk is another potential mode of exposure. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms by which EDC exposure can cause non-communicable diseases in humans and also pets. The talks in this session will explore the effects of BPA on reproductive and cardiovascular functions, the effects of a mixture of BPA and DEHP on body functions and investigate the use of stem cells to screen for the presence of EDCs. Our first speaker, Dr. VasanthaPadmanabhan from the University of Michigan could not be here, but Dr. P.S. MohanKumar will be presenting her talk instead.
