Who Is Storage Switzerland?
Our Speakers
W. Curtis Preston is a Senior Analyst at Storage
Switzerland. He has been specializing in data
protection for over 20 years, having designed and
implemented backup, DR, and archive systems for
some of the largest companies in the world. He is
the author of O’Reilly’s Backup & Recovery and
Using SANs and NAS.
Our Speakers
Mike Lyon is the service delivery manager for Scale
Computing, and he works to develop professional services
as well as integrations and partnerships that enhance the
ecosystem of Scale Computing’s HC3 Hyperconverged
infrastructure platform.
Lately, he worked to launch a DRaaS offering that provides
a managed disaster recovery solution, along with the SSD
Retrofit service to enable existing HC3 clusters to take
advantage of flash. Mike has 20 years of experience as an
IT professional, in financial services, higher education, and
national retail.

Polling Question
What is your DR plan for your VMs?
Array-Based Limitations
• Most HCI vendors do not support external storage
• Must have same exact array setup
• Cannot do many to one, one to many
• All virtual disks, VMX files, RDM devices and LUN
working directory must all be in the same array
• Cannot change snapshot location (WorkingDir)
• Supports linked clones, but all nodes in a snapshot tree
must be replicated
Software Replication
Limitations
• Only recover to last snapshot in VMware
• Previous snapshots wiped out in a restore
• Multiple VMware snapshots a bad idea anyway
• vSphere Replication does not support linked clones
• Hyper-V limited to 24 recovery points and 24 hours of
history
• Hyper-V DR only supports Windows 2012
Shared Site Limitations
• SRM does not support one to many replication
• Each SRM pair must have its own physical host
machine at recovery site
• Shared recovery site can handle max of 10 protected
sites
• Every customer at a shared recovery site can see every
other customer’s data!
• Hyper-V extended replication doesn’t support
application consistency
CPU Limitations
• Must have 100%
compatible CPUs on
BIOS settings if using
memory state
snapshots
The Challenges With Adding A Third
Party DR Product
• Cost
• Complexity of learning,
integrating and managing
3rd party product
The Advantages Of Alternative
Hypervisors
• Integrated DR without these
limitations
• No “VMware tax”
• No 3rd party backup product
to buy, learn, manage
Scale HC3 Features
• Single Unified Management Interface
• Block Access, Direct Attached Storage System
• Hybrid Flash with Automated Tiering
• Cluster to Cluster Replication and Failover
• Thin Cloning and Snapshots
• Rolling, Non-Disruptive Updates
• Deploy a Cluster with Live VMs in <1 Hour
• Deploy a New Node with No Downtime in Minutes
HC3 Simplified Management
HC3 Advantages
• Designed Specifically for the SMB
• Hyper-Efficient I/O Path – No VSA Architecture
• Hypervisor Included – No 3rd Party Licensing
• Fully Redundant, Fault Tolerant, Stress Free
• 24/7/365 In-House ScaleCare Support
• Near Turnkey Deployment
• No Expertise Required (Storage, HA, Virtualization)
What’s New?
New in 2016!
• Hybrid Flash, Tiered Storage Nodes
