LRC XIII Localisation Conference - Using community feedback to improve social...sarni
Unlike more traditional software like operating systems and office productivity suites, social networking technology and therefore terminology has developed rapidly over the last few years.
With more Web 2.0 applications featuring a strong social aspect, including the voice of the customer is becoming increasingly important in order to be able to capture the latest terminology used in the social networking domain. To be successful in tomorrow’s market-place, established businesses need to create business models that are inclusive of its customers while leveraging the global expertise and vast know-how and future potential they bring to the table.
To address this challenge, Microsoft has launched several initiatives to embrace end-users and the “community”. One of them is the “MTCF” terminology community engagement and feedback program designed to assess and improve the quality of localised Microsoft Messenger and Spaces terminology through community feedback with a focus on social networking terminology.
This presentation will cover lessons learned from the 1900+ terminology suggestions received across 29 EMEA languages during this feedback program. It will explore interesting observations from the community around existing terminology, implications for source terminology, the importance of style and “artistic license” in translation and challenges to existing - and often anecdotal - assumptions about terminology quality.

How do Asian and Western websites differ, and why? Recent findings in experim...UXPA International
Anyone who has done UX work in Asia knows that Asian websites typically feature more visually complex designs, with a greater density of information and interactive elements, than those from America and Europe. Observers have offered a number of explanations for this difference, including a greater cultural need for security and information, higher Internet bandwidth, a less mature UX ecosystem, and more complex urban environments.
Drawing on recent research in experimental psychology, we argue that a tendency in Asian cultures towards more contextually rich and relational processing in comparison to American and European cultures can explain many of these differences. Next, we examine emerging findings that suggest similar cognitive tendencies exist based on religion, region, class, political orientation. We conclude with a summary of best practices for designing user experiences across cultural contexts, emphasizing the importance of local knowledge and user research in the increasingly diverse world of UX.
If you’re a programmer you make design decisions every second.
Statements, functions, classes, packages, applications, even entire systems: you need to think, and often think hard, about everything. Luckily there are many useful design principles, patterns and best practices that you can apply. But some of them merely expose code smells. Others only help you design your classes. And some are
applicable to packages only. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some more general, always useful, invariably applicable, foundational design principles?
In this talk we’ll look at software from many different perspectives, and while we’re zooming in and out, we’ll discover some of the deeper principles that lie beneath proper object-oriented design. They are the foundation of many of the well-known design patterns and they may even serve as an explanation for code smells.
