Anyone who has done UX work in Asia knows that Asian websites typically feature more visually complex designs, with a greater density of information and interactive elements, than those from America and Europe. Observers have offered a number of explanations for this difference, including a greater cultural need for security and information, higher Internet bandwidth, a less mature UX ecosystem, and more complex urban environments.
Drawing on recent research in experimental psychology, we argue that a tendency in Asian cultures towards more contextually rich and relational processing in comparison to American and European cultures can explain many of these differences. Next, we examine emerging findings that suggest similar cognitive tendencies exist based on religion, region, class, political orientation. We conclude with a summary of best practices for designing user experiences across cultural contexts, emphasizing the importance of local knowledge and user research in the increasingly diverse world of UX.
Anti stealth technology
Modern military stealth technology aims to make craft invisible to radar and infrared detection. However, this can be nullified by detecting sensors searching not for the stealth craft itself, but for the background behind it. Any eclipsing of the background would reveal the location and shape of the stealth craft as a black silhouette. Statements, functions, classes, packages, applications, even entire systems: you need to think, and often think hard, about everything. Luckily there are many useful design principles, patterns and best practices that you can apply. But some of them merely expose code smells. Others only help you design your classes. And some are
applicable to packages only. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some more general, always useful, invariably applicable, foundational design principles?
In this talk we’ll look at software from many different perspectives, and while we’re zooming in and out, we’ll discover some of the deeper principles that lie beneath proper object-oriented design. They are the foundation of many of the well-known design patterns and they may even serve as an explanation for code smells.
