2. WHAT IT IS
One way that photographers protect their work online, is by adding a
watermark to the photo to prevent people from using it without their
permission or without paying them for it. However, Google recently
discovered an algorithm that allows them to erase the watermark from
these photos without distorting the original photo.

4. HOW IT WORKS
“The AI can estimate the watermark image and its opacity and recover the
original, watermark-free image underneath.”
❏ Identify which structure is repeated throughout the image.
❏ Determine its decomposition in the image & alpha matte components.
❏ Separate the watermark from the photo & clean the background to match the
entire photo.

❏ You are now able to use any photo online, even if it has a watermark
without having to pay for it or photoshop it yourself.
❏ Makes it harder for other non-Google programs to offer a way to remove
the watermark that isn’t as sufficient as Googles.
❏ Meant to help photographers and stock photo communities in order to
improve their watermarks.

❏ Only works with large batches of photos with the same watermark.
❏ Affects photographers who have the same watermark on all their photos
because now their watermarks can be removed.
❏ People will now be able to steal work from photographers without
paying them or giving them credit.
