WHAT IS PHOTO EDITING?
A.WHAT IS PHOTO EDITING?
The Philippines was considered to be the social media
capital of the world in numerous reports for a few
consecutive years with an average of four hours of usage
time per day.
According to a report published by Statista in 2022, it is
expected by 2026 that over 91 million out of around 118
million Filipinos will be considered social media users,
producing numerous entailments for the country —one of
which is the improving competence of users to basic
content editing for better presentation of profiles in social
network sites (SNSs).
According to Orbit Graphics:
“Photo editing is the change of an
existing photo shoot. These changes
can be modifying, altering any portion,
or improving its visualization using
different tools, software.”
According to Techopedia:
“Image (or photo) editing refers to
modifying or improving digital or traditional
photographic images using different
techniques, tools or software. It is done to
create the best possible look for the images
and also to improve the overall quality of the
image according to different parameters.”
According to MasterClass:
“Photo editing (also called post-
processing or postproduction) is the
process in digital photography of making
adjustments to photographs in a photo
editing program. It’s digital
photography’s version of a darkroom,
where photos can be tweaked after a
photography shoot.”
According to Pro Global Business
Solutions:
“Photo editing is the process of altering
or making adjustments to the clicked
photographs in a way to make them look
professional and presentable by
balancing each and every part of the
scene visible within.”
HISTORY OF PHOTO EDITING
1840s
The first-ever negative which could be
used to make numerous photos was created.
1850s
The Wet Plate Collodion Process was discovered
by combining multiple photos using specific chemicals
and negatives in order to produce a single photograph.
1860s
The first example of a photo alteration is recorded (the photo
manipulation of US President Abraham Lincoln).
1980s
Computer programs used for photo editing
were created.
1987
Thomas & John Knoll created the world’s first
digital photo editing software. This was
introduced by Adobe on February 19, 1990 who
purchased it from the Knoll brothers.
2011
Adobe launched the first photo editing
application for smartphones.
WHY DO WE
EDIT PHOTOS?
1.It’s part of the process of producing an image or
photograph. It’s either you manually edit your
captured photos, or your equipment (camera) does
it for you.
2. Not everyone is a gifted photographer. Photo
editing gives us a chance to improve our photos
the way we want it.
WHY DO WE EDIT PHOTOS?
WHY DO WE
EDIT PHOTOS?
3. Photo editing lets us discover our creative side
and, in some cases, — our own identity in the
photos.
4. It lets you tell the story wanted to share in the first
place. What the camera fails to do as you would
have wanted it sometimes, you can do it through
photo editing.
PHOTO EDITING
PROCESS
There are numerous image-editing methods that can be
used for photographing. While some editing tools allow
you to make general improvements to the quality of your
images, others let you make more focused edits to a
certain area of the image. You'll use the following photo
editing software for basic editing:

HOW TO IMPROVE
PHOTO EDITING
SKILLS
You may successfully edit your images by
remembering these fundamental photo editing
principles. If you follow these guidelines, your work
will look sharper, and more detailed, and preserve
its quality, whether you crop or enhance the image.
1.ONLY EDIT THECOPY,
NEVERTHEORIGINAL.
It is important to keep a copy of the
image you are working on. First, as a
backup, and second, so that you can go
back and work on it again if you don't like
the changes or want to try a completely
different approach.
2.IDENTIFY WHAT YOU DON’T
NEED, THEN CROP IT OUT.
Once you learn how to use it properly, you
can remove the parts of the image that don't
help tell the story and highlight the parts
that do. This means omitting large
backgrounds in portraits and wildlife
photography or using specific sizes and
aspect ratios to make the shot look heavily
edited.
3. RETAIN QUALITY AND
PERSPECTIVEWHEN RESIZING.
This means that the width and height
dimensions should be kept the same to
preserve perspective and prevent the image
from being distorted or stretched. If you
scale the image beyond 100%, it will
become pixelated. However, it is possible to
resize images through resampling without
losing quality.
4. DON’T OVERDO THINGS.
Extensive use of retouching techniques in
portraiture can quickly make the subject
look unrealistic. Also, cloning too much can
make your landscape look otherworldly,
especially if you want to keep it looking
natural. This rule also applies to color and
saturation. Overdoing it can make the image
look overly edited and force you to go back
and start over.
5. STUDY THECONTRAST.
Ensuring perfect image contrast should be a
top priority for any photo editor. However,
when working with photos using basic photo
editing tools, dark areas often look too dark,
and bright areas look washed out.
6. CALIBRATE YOUR SCREEN.
Learning how to calibrate your monitor for
editing is an essential part of taking your
photo editing skills to the next level. This can
be done through dedicated hardware that
evaluates your computer or screen to ensure
that the colors you see on your display are
perfect.
7. BESELECTIVE.
Before you edit anything, you must choose
your best shot. It doesn't make sense to
waste time perfecting an image only to find
out that the next photo in the sequence is
better.
8. STAYCONSISTENT.
The more you edit, the more you will know
what you like about an image, which will help
you establish your own style. Additionally,
creating a consistent look and feel when
editing helps your website or social media
posts stay organized and have an overall feel
that conveys a sense of sophistication.
PHOTO EDITING: AN
ETHICAL INQUIRY
Photographs were once thought to be
accurate, but the capacity to edit the final
product quickly dispelled that belief. Even
now, filters are employed to add both
subtle and striking effects to photographs,
and the variety of choices has significantly
increased thanks to in-camera digital
effects.
The line separating "true" and
"manipulated" photographs has blurred in
the 21st century. Photographers are
therefore faced with ethical issues and
concerns because so few of us have
thought about the ethics of image
alteration.
