Introduction
 Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies
(e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form
of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or
indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to
remove harmful compounds.
 Water pollution affects the entire biosphere of plants and organisms living
in these water bodies, as well as organisms and plants that might be
exposed to the water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to
individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological
communities.
What is water pollution?
 Water pollution is defined as the presence in groundwater of toxic
chemicals and biological agents that exceed what is naturally found in the
water and may pose a threat to human health and/or the environment.
 Additionally, water pollution may consist of chemicals introduced into the
water bodies as a result of various human activities. Any amount of those
chemicals pollutes the water, regardless of the harm they may pose to
human health and the environment.
Sabarmati river
Sabarmati river
 River Sabarmati is one of the biggest and major river of Gujarat that runs through two
major cities of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and finally meets the Gulf of
Khambhat (GoK) in the Arabian Sea. A study was conducted to evaluate the water
quality of this river, as it could possibly be one of the major sources for filling up
Kalpasar, the proposed man-made freshwater reservoir supposed to be the biggest one
in the world.
 A total of nine sampling stations were established covering 163 km stretch of the river
from upstream of Gandhinagar city to Vataman near Sabarmati estuary.
Physicochemical (temperature, pH, salinity, chloride, total dissolved solids, turbidity,
dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, phenol, and petroleum hydrocarbons),
biological (phytoplankton), and microbiological (total and selective bacterial count)
analyses indicated that the river stretch from Ahmedabad-Vasana barriage to Vataman
was highly polluted due to perennial waste discharges mainly from municipal drainage
and industries.
 An implementation of sustainable management plan with proper treatment of both
municipal and industrial effluents is essential to prevent further deterioration of the
water quality of this river.
Pollution of Sabarmati
Pollution of Sabarmati river
 Back in 2010, the river was branded as the third most polluted in the
country by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), with the highest
volumes of F.Coli in the country. F.Coli in these stretches was found to be
2.8 million MPN (most probable number) in every 100 ml of the river
 In 2011, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) conducted random
checks of pollution indicators of the river and declared in early 2012 that
“fecal coliform and total coliform (T.Coli) bacteria were beyond permissible
limit.”
 The report also said that biological oxygen demand (BOD) — which
indicates the concentration of biological microorganisms in water — had
increased by 290%; F.Coli by 860%; and T.Coli by 480%.
 The brunt of the city’s pollution is borne by thousands of people who live
along the 21 kilometre stretch of the river in the downstream. In a study
conducted by the LD Engineering College last year, it was found that the
river was unfit for aquatic life with its dissolved oxygen being zero, even 28
km downstream.
 one should factor in the millions of litres of “treated” effluent water of 3,365
units of Vatva, Odhav, and Naroda pumped into the river by the GIDC
Megapipeline at the Vasna-Narol Bridge
Polluted Sabarmati drowns rescuers in
boils, ras
 The jawans of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services have rescued
several individuals from the Sabarmati river, but these jawans not only face
hardships during operations but complain of rashes on the skin because of
algae, pollutants or other material dumped in the river
One jawan says, "Usually, when we go for rescues in the river, within the
city, a day after the operation, we develop itching and on sometimes boils
break out as well.
If we are in the rescue for long, we are bound to develop rashes, and
sometimes hidden sharp edges give us lacerations as well."
This is also because at several places, untreated sewerage water is
released in the river.
 Not just skin related issues, when we emerge we find threads, flowers or
other things on us. The equipment also gets stuck in these get materials,
especially idols and photo frames. Of late, we have even found 15 to 20-kg
bags of materials like ashes or leftovers in the river." Another fireman said:
"We had drawn the attention of our officials to this, but they too were
helpless.
 The corporation has been claiming that they will have nets on all the
bridges, but these remained on paper. The pots on bridges to collect
leftover from religious ceremonies, are full of waste and people throw
material into the river.
Mega plan to make Sabarmati river
pollution free
 In a bid to revitalise the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad
Municipal Corporation has embarked on an ambitious plan to make it
pollution-free.
 The historical river, which serves as the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's
Ashram, has faced the brunt of rapid urbanisation over the years as industrial
effluents and sewerage lines release a lot of polluted water into it leading to a
foul smell.
 "Earlier, the monsoon river, which bisects the city, used to dry up after rainy
season. Now the Gujarat government has been regularly filling it up with water
from the Narmada. But the water remains stagnant as it is stopped by a Raska
Weir to retain the flow and the pollutants released into it add to the stink," they
said.
 "Following this, the civic body has drawn up an ambitious plan of Rs 960 crore
to stop the pollutants from entering the river," Special City Engineer of AMC
Tarun Lad told PTI
 The project, which has been approved by the AMC standing Committee,
will be sent to the Union Environment Ministry via the state government to
include it under the National River Conservation Programme (NRCP), he
said.
 Also, the AMC has undertaken the Sabarmati Riverfront Development
Project to make the river pollution free, thus giving a much needed face-lift
to Ahmedabad, Lad said.
 "We have prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for abatement of
pollution from Sabarmati river, and all related works including setting up of
drainage pumping stations, sewerage treatment plants, interceptors for
effluents and sewerage released in river and replacing old drainage lines,"
he said.
Thank you

  • 2. Flow of presentation  Introduction  What is water pollution  Sabarmati river  Pollution of Sabarmati  Polluted Sabarmati drowns rescuers in boils, rashes  Mega plan to make Sabarmati river pollution free
  • 3. Introduction  Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.  Water pollution affects the entire biosphere of plants and organisms living in these water bodies, as well as organisms and plants that might be exposed to the water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.
  • 4. What is water pollution?  Water pollution is defined as the presence in groundwater of toxic chemicals and biological agents that exceed what is naturally found in the water and may pose a threat to human health and/or the environment.  Additionally, water pollution may consist of chemicals introduced into the water bodies as a result of various human activities. Any amount of those chemicals pollutes the water, regardless of the harm they may pose to human health and the environment.
  • 6. Sabarmati river  River Sabarmati is one of the biggest and major river of Gujarat that runs through two major cities of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and finally meets the Gulf of Khambhat (GoK) in the Arabian Sea. A study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of this river, as it could possibly be one of the major sources for filling up Kalpasar, the proposed man-made freshwater reservoir supposed to be the biggest one in the world.  A total of nine sampling stations were established covering 163 km stretch of the river from upstream of Gandhinagar city to Vataman near Sabarmati estuary. Physicochemical (temperature, pH, salinity, chloride, total dissolved solids, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, phenol, and petroleum hydrocarbons), biological (phytoplankton), and microbiological (total and selective bacterial count) analyses indicated that the river stretch from Ahmedabad-Vasana barriage to Vataman was highly polluted due to perennial waste discharges mainly from municipal drainage and industries.  An implementation of sustainable management plan with proper treatment of both municipal and industrial effluents is essential to prevent further deterioration of the water quality of this river.

Pollution of Sabarmati river  Back in 2010, the river was branded as the third most polluted in the country by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), with the highest volumes of F.Coli in the country. F.Coli in these stretches was found to be 2.8 million MPN (most probable number) in every 100 ml of the river  In 2011, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) conducted random checks of pollution indicators of the river and declared in early 2012 that “fecal coliform and total coliform (T.Coli) bacteria were beyond permissible limit.”  The report also said that biological oxygen demand (BOD) — which indicates the concentration of biological microorganisms in water — had increased by 290%; F.Coli by 860%; and T.Coli by 480%.

In a study conducted by the LD Engineering College last year, it was found that the river was unfit for aquatic life with its dissolved oxygen being zero, even 28 km downstream.  one should factor in the millions of litres of “treated” effluent water of 3,365 units of Vatva, Odhav, and Naroda pumped into the river by the GIDC Megapipeline at the Vasna-Narol Bridge

Polluted Sabarmati drowns rescuers in boils, ras  The jawans of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services have rescued several individuals from the Sabarmati river, but these jawans not only face hardships during operations but complain of rashes on the skin because of algae, pollutants or other material dumped in the river One jawan says, "Usually, when we go for rescues in the river, within the city, a day after the operation, we develop itching and on sometimes boils break out as well. If we are in the rescue for long, we are bound to develop rashes, and sometimes hidden sharp edges give us lacerations as well." This is also because at several places, untreated sewerage water is released in the river.

Of late, we have even found 15 to 20-kg bags of materials like ashes or leftovers in the river." Another fireman said: "We had drawn the attention of our officials to this, but they too were helpless.  The corporation has been claiming that they will have nets on all the bridges, but these remained on paper. The pots on bridges to collect leftover from religious ceremonies, are full of waste and people throw material into the river.

Mega plan to make Sabarmati river pollution free  In a bid to revitalise the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has embarked on an ambitious plan to make it pollution-free.  The historical river, which serves as the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's Ashram, has faced the brunt of rapid urbanisation over the years as industrial effluents and sewerage lines release a lot of polluted water into it leading to a foul smell.  "Earlier, the monsoon river, which bisects the city, used to dry up after rainy season. Now the Gujarat government has been regularly filling it up with water from the Narmada. But the water remains stagnant as it is stopped by a Raska Weir to retain the flow and the pollutants released into it add to the stink," they said.  "Following this, the civic body has drawn up an ambitious plan of Rs 960 crore to stop the pollutants from entering the river," Special City Engineer of AMC Tarun Lad told PTI
  • 14.  The project, which has been approved by the AMC standing Committee, will be sent to the Union Environment Ministry via the state government to include it under the National River Conservation Programme (NRCP), he said.  Also, the AMC has undertaken the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project to make the river pollution free, thus giving a much needed face-lift to Ahmedabad, Lad said.  "We have prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for abatement of pollution from Sabarmati river, and all related works including setting up of drainage pumping stations, sewerage treatment plants, interceptors for effluents and sewerage released in river and replacing old drainage lines," he said.
