Water clocks, also known as clepsydras, are an early mechanism for measuring time by regulating the flow of water into or out of a container. The first water clocks consisted of a ceramic vessel filled to a certain level, with a hole at the base that allowed water to drain out at a consistent rate over a set period of time. Later versions featured containers divided into multiple sections so the dropping water level would indicate different periods of the day or night.
