Introduction
● Drinking water is a major source of microbial pathogens in
developing countries.
● Waterborne disease cause more than 2 million deaths
and 4 billion cases of diarrhea annually.
● 9 out of 10 deaths are in children and virtually
all of the deaths are in developing
countries.
Terms to be known
1. Potable(clean) water:
It is free of all objectionable material, including
pathogens, tastes, odors, colours, toxins, radioactive material,
organisms, oils, gases, etc.
2. Contaminated or polluted water
Water contaminated with sewage, domestic or industrial
waste with chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms
Classification of waterborne diseases
Vector borne diseases
Water-borne diseases:
Diseases caused by ingestion of water
contaminated by human or animal faeces
or urine , which contain pathogenic
microorganisms.
Water-washed Diseases:
Diseases caused by poor personal hygiene and skin and eye contact
with contaminated water
Water-based Diseases
Water-based diseases are caused by organisms by different species
of worms that spend parts of their life-cycle in different habitats.
● They have spent one development cycle in aquatic molluscs, and
another as fully grown parasites in other.
Vector-borne Diseases:
Vector-borne diseases are caused by bites from
insects that breed in water.
● Insect vectors such as mosquitoes transmit
diseases such as malaria,
Chikungunya .
Examples and routes of Infection:
Transmission Pathway:
List of diseases caused by Pathogenic microorganisms

Water-borne disease caused by
Chemicals
● Arsenic
● Fluoride
● Nitrates from fertilizers
● Carcinogenic pesticides (DDT)
● Lead (from pipes)
● Heavy Metals
● Chromium
● Nickel
● Cyanide
Treatment Of Drinking Water
● Water treatment describes those industrial-scale processes
used to make water more acceptable for a desired end-use.
● These can include use for drinking water, industry, medical and
many other uses.
Objective -To remove existing contaminants in the water, or reduce
the concentration of such contaminants so the water becomes fit
for its desired end-use.
Conventional Method for Water Sequence
of stages :
1. Screening
2. Aeration
3. pH correction
4. Coagulation and flocculation
5. Sedimentation
6. Pre-chlorination and dechlorination
7. Filtration
8. Disinfection
9. pH adjustment
1. Screening
➔ removal of coarse floating objects
➔ weeds
2. Aeration
➔ dissolving oxygen into the water
➔ removes smell and taste
➔ promotes helpful bacteria growth
➔ precipitates nuisance metals like
iron and manganese.
3. pH correction
➔ Pure water has a neutral pH (that is 7 on the PH scale).
➔ Impurities in water and the treatment steps can make it either acid or alkali.
When water has undergone coagulation with Alum (see COAGULATION)
the pH is reduced.
➔ Lime may also be added to set the pH to lower levels, which is the level
where chlorine kills germs most effectively. Once the chlorine has done it’s
work (see CHLORINATION) then the water is set back to neutral which is
safe and ready to go to your house.
4. Coagulation and flocculation
➔ add coagulating agent (aluminum sulfate or iron sulfate)- causes
agglomeration (clumping) and sedimentation of solid particles
➔ these solid particles are called floc or sludge.
5. Sedimentation
➔ Floc settles out and is scraped and vacuumed off the bottom of large
sedimentation tanks.
➔ Clarified water drains out of the top of these tanks in a giant decanting
process.
6. Pre-chlorination and dechlorination
➔ Mostly to kill algae that would otherwise grow and clog the water filters.
➔ Also kill much of the remaining bacteria
7. FILTRATION
“In order to remove or to reduce the contents of impurities still further, the water
is filtered through the beds of fine granular material like sand”
● Rapid-sand filters
➔ force water through a 0.45-1m layer of sand and work faster, needing a
smaller area.
➔ But they need frequent backwashing
● Slow-sand filters
➔ require a much larger area but reduce
bacteriological and viral levels to better due
to the Schutzdecke (biofilm) layer.
➔ The top 1 inch of biofilm must
be periodically scraped off and the filter
occasionally back
8. Disinfection
Water completely free of suspended sediment is treated with a powerful
oxidizing agent usually.
➢ Chlorine- Dosage- 5 mg per litre.
➢ Chloramine (chlorine and ammonia)
➢ Sodium hypochlorite solution (5%)
➢ Ultraviolet radiations
➢ Ozonation
9. pH adjustment
So that treated water leaves the plant in the desired range of 6.5 to
8.5 pH units.
THANK
YOU!

water borne diseases

  • 1. Water Borne Diseases prevention and guidelines for safe drinking water GROUP MEMBERS IQRA NOOR TASHFEEN GULFRAZ AYESHA RUBAB
  • 2. Introduction ● Drinking water is a major source of microbial pathogens in developing countries. ● Waterborne disease cause more than 2 million deaths and 4 billion cases of diarrhea annually. ● 9 out of 10 deaths are in children and virtually all of the deaths are in developing countries.
  • 3. Terms to be known 1. Potable(clean) water: It is free of all objectionable material, including pathogens, tastes, odors, colours, toxins, radioactive material, organisms, oils, gases, etc. 2. Contaminated or polluted water Water contaminated with sewage, domestic or industrial waste with chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms
  • 4. Classification of waterborne diseases Vector borne diseases
  • 5. Water-borne diseases: Diseases caused by ingestion of water contaminated by human or animal faeces or urine , which contain pathogenic microorganisms. Water-washed Diseases: Diseases caused by poor personal hygiene and skin and eye contact with contaminated water
  • 6. Water-based Diseases Water-based diseases are caused by organisms by different species of worms that spend parts of their life-cycle in different habitats. ● They have spent one development cycle in aquatic molluscs, and another as fully grown parasites in other. Vector-borne Diseases: Vector-borne diseases are caused by bites from insects that breed in water. ● Insect vectors such as mosquitoes transmit diseases such as malaria, Chikungunya .
  • 7. Examples and routes of Infection:
  • 9. List of diseases caused by Pathogenic microorganisms
  • 11. Water-borne disease caused by Chemicals ● Arsenic ● Fluoride ● Nitrates from fertilizers ● Carcinogenic pesticides (DDT) ● Lead (from pipes) ● Heavy Metals ● Chromium ● Nickel ● Cyanide
  • 12. Treatment Of Drinking Water ● Water treatment describes those industrial-scale processes used to make water more acceptable for a desired end-use. ● These can include use for drinking water, industry, medical and many other uses. Objective -To remove existing contaminants in the water, or reduce the concentration of such contaminants so the water becomes fit for its desired end-use.
  • 13. Conventional Method for Water Sequence of stages : 1. Screening 2. Aeration 3. pH correction 4. Coagulation and flocculation 5. Sedimentation 6. Pre-chlorination and dechlorination 7. Filtration 8. Disinfection 9. pH adjustment
  • 14. 1. Screening ➔ removal of coarse floating objects ➔ weeds 2. Aeration ➔ dissolving oxygen into the water ➔ removes smell and taste ➔ promotes helpful bacteria growth ➔ precipitates nuisance metals like iron and manganese.
  • 15. 3. pH correction ➔ Pure water has a neutral pH (that is 7 on the PH scale). ➔ Impurities in water and the treatment steps can make it either acid or alkali. When water has undergone coagulation with Alum (see COAGULATION) the pH is reduced. ➔ Lime may also be added to set the pH to lower levels, which is the level where chlorine kills germs most effectively. Once the chlorine has done it’s work (see CHLORINATION) then the water is set back to neutral which is safe and ready to go to your house.
  • 16. 4. Coagulation and flocculation ➔ add coagulating agent (aluminum sulfate or iron sulfate)- causes agglomeration (clumping) and sedimentation of solid particles ➔ these solid particles are called floc or sludge.
  • 17. 5. Sedimentation ➔ Floc settles out and is scraped and vacuumed off the bottom of large sedimentation tanks. ➔ Clarified water drains out of the top of these tanks in a giant decanting process. 6. Pre-chlorination and dechlorination ➔ Mostly to kill algae that would otherwise grow and clog the water filters. ➔ Also kill much of the remaining bacteria
  • 18. 7. FILTRATION “In order to remove or to reduce the contents of impurities still further, the water is filtered through the beds of fine granular material like sand” ● Rapid-sand filters ➔ force water through a 0.45-1m layer of sand and work faster, needing a smaller area. ➔ But they need frequent backwashing ● Slow-sand filters ➔ require a much larger area but reduce bacteriological and viral levels to better due to the Schutzdecke (biofilm) layer. ➔ The top 1 inch of biofilm must be periodically scraped off and the filter occasionally back

  • 20. 8. Disinfection Water completely free of suspended sediment is treated with a powerful oxidizing agent usually. ➢ Chlorine- Dosage- 5 mg per litre. ➢ Chloramine (chlorine and ammonia) ➢ Sodium hypochlorite solution (5%) ➢ Ultraviolet radiations ➢ Ozonation 9. pH adjustment So that treated water leaves the plant in the desired range of 6.5 to 8.5 pH units.
