Reduced fuel consumptionby more than 1 million gallons. -Prevented the creation of an estimated 360,000 pounds per year of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxide, as well as more that 27 million pounds of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing 2,200 cars from District roads.
SmarTrip is a stored-value card run by metro for use on Washington and the metropolitan area’s public transit, including transportation run by agencies other than WMATA.Users are allowed to store up to $300 on the card and pay a discounted rate to use the transit.SmarTrip adds efficiency and safety to the system
Goals are desired outcomes to be achieved, such as health, equity and happiness. Objectives are ways to achieve goals. During a planning process it is helpful to ask regularly, “What are we trying to achieve?”The ‘what’ is the goal – we develop objectives to achieve this goal. Washington D.C. has been extremely successful in achieving the broader goal of sustainability. This success can be attributed to the capital bikeshare program.

-The Green Alleys Initiative seeks to decrease the quantity and increase the quality of the runoff within the city’s right-of-way.-To do this DDOT is using low impact design in green alleys to decrease runoff from them.
-It also provides environmental benefits through smarter and more efficient use of land resources.-The “Great Streets” initiative is an excellent example of DDOT’s ongoing efforts to bring together transportation improvements and land use strategies through interagency collaboration.
as a multi‐agency effort between the federal and District governments, AWI integrates transportation, land use and economic development projects within the area. -It is a successful case of improved livability in the District. AWI aims to revitalize neighborhoods around the waterfront of the Anacostia River by creating a hub of economic development and bringing thousands of new jobs, residents and visitors to this vital neighborhood.
