This presentation is a talk given at the 14 November Philadelphia area AIChE meeting. Chemical engineers, especially those in the US, are increasingly being asked to develop incremental increases in plant capacity, say up to 20%. Many plants are now running at maximum capacity, yet tight capital funding and requirements for short payback periods make it difficult to have large investment for new, grassroots facilities. In some cases, engineers need to meet demand increments much less than the capacity of a new plant, while further demand growth is uncertain. The manufacturer must then choose the appropriate capacity increment, instead of overdesigning Debottlenecking projects are undertaken to deliver these capacity increases, by implementing select changes to specific parts of a plant to relieve restrictions. In this session, we will discuss tools and analyses for assessing the process bottlenecks. We will address means of debottlenecking numerous unit operations, while listing points often forgotten in such projects. Finally we will discuss how debottlenecking projects are different from conventional grass roots projects, while treating the practical aspects of how to manage such projects. A list of references is included for further, deeper study. Many of the facts and figures presented in the talk were taken from these references.

The problem in communication between students and lecturers in large classrooms has increased substantially in last couple of years because many students do not participate in classroom discussions. To engage students into dynamic classroom participation, universities often encourage students to use audience response systems (ARS). By increasing the interactivity between lecturer and students, the dynamic student participation improves and the learning outcome is expected to rise.
The progress in the mobile technologies has influenced new approaches in developing ARS. In this paper, we discuss the need for mobile ARS and we propose a new architecture for developing those systems. Furthermore, we present details from our reference implementation of the proposed architecture, named Click’N’Gage, together with some of the crucial design decisions we took while developing the system. The paper closes with a short evaluation of the system, together with few ideas on how the system could be improved in the future.
What the Instructor Can Learn by Recording Students’ Desktop Screens in Onlin...ijejournal
In programming courses, instructors need to know the status of students during exercise sessions because they often make mistakes while creating programs. This study analyses desktop screens recorded by thirdyear students in a web programming course at Kindai University in Japan, categorizes the problems, and proposes content and methodological improvements for learning through online lectures. The results of the experiment revealed that (a) the students watched the lecture video at half the screen size, (b) it was difficult to rewind the video, and (c) even though students faced difficulties in completing the task, they decided not to ask questions and worked on the same problem for more than 30 minutes. While most previous studies have used questionnaire-based surveys, this study demonstrates that instructors viewing recorded desktop screens of students can identify issues that students may not be aware of on their own.

6 Computer–Mediated Feedback

Overall, satisfaction with CFS correlated with students’
perception of challenges. All (and only) students who
reported challenges to spoken participation (8 of 11) also
reported enjoying CFS. Below, we discuss each
challenge:
Feedback Lag: CFS alleviated feedback lag for
students. 3 of 11 students in our survey felt that
unsolicited, spoken questions would interrupt the flow of
lecture. All 3 felt CFS addressed the problem. (2 other
students felt displaying only one previous slide was not
enough for their lagged feedback.)
Two strategies emerged for overcoming feedback lag
with CFS. The first was expected: waiting for the
