Eye tracking and its economic feasibilityJeffrey Funk
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze how the economic feasibility of eye tracking technology is becoming better through improvements in infrared LEDs, micro-projectors, image sensors, and microprocessors. The capability to track an eye’s movement can help us better identify tired drivers and equipment operators, understand the eye movements of retail shoppers, and develop better human-computer interfaces. Tired drivers and machine operators lead to accidents and these accidents lead to loss of human life and equipment damage. Retailers would like to better understand the eye movements of their customers in order to better design retail stores. Eye trackers would enable one type of human-computer interface, Google Glasses, to understand the information that users are viewing and thus what they want to access
Eye tracking is done with a combination of infrared LEDs, micro-projectors, image sensors, and microprocessors. All of these components are experiencing rapid improvements in cost and performance as feature sizes are made smaller and the number of transistors are increased. Improvements in image sensors have led to higher accuracy and precision where precision refers to consistency. Much of these improvements have come from higher pixel densities and sampling frequencies of the image sensors; the latter enables tracking even when there are head movements.
These improvements have also led to lower costs and cost reductions continue to occur. The cost of high-end eye tracking systems have dropped from about 30,000 USD in 2000 to 18,000 in 2010 and 5,000 in 2013. Further reductions will occur as Moore’s Law continues and as higher volumes enable lower margins.

A new perspective of refractive error calculation with mobile application IJECEIAES
In many situations, not standardized and limited access to eye health care in several regions of Indonesia becomes the main challenge for myopia patients to measure and monitor their current refractive error condition. Many apps were proposed to provide low-cost alternative measurement tools rather than expensive tools such as Phoropter with Snellen chart and Retinoscopy, but still, those apps need an Internet connection and manually complex steps to operate. These conditions make myopia patients reluctant to use this kind of service. In this regard, we propose an intuitive diopter level measurement app based on mobile application setup, which implements the concept of measure the user face to smartphone screen distance for the rapid diopter calculation processes and at the same time provides a low-cost alternative refractive measurement tool. This paper highlights our experiences when developing a mobile application that can help patients with myopia measuring their blur line distances and evaluate their diopter levels independently. We conduct a number of human trials with the device on a controlled environment to demonstrate the ability of the proposed app to measure the diopter level. The experimental results show that the proposed app is quite successful in measuring the diopter level of myopia patients with a relatively small range of calculation errors compared to optometrist measurement results.

Integrating Interaction Design Evaluation into Product DesignYingjie Chen
Formative evaluation plays an important role in the domain of interaction design (IXD). It occurs throughout the design and development processes, with the results of evaluation feeding back to revise the design. How important is formative evaluation in a product design process? Will this method obstruct creativity, or it can inspire and promote better design? In the fall of 2010, students from a senior-level product design course and a graduate-level interaction design course were grouped together to work on a GE Healthcare sponsored design project: home-based health monitors for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Arthritis. Product design students led the overall process of design: investigating the diseases, brainstorming the concepts and finalizing the design with stages of prototypes and computer models. IXD students acted in two roles: designing the interactive design components of the concepts and running formative evaluations iteratively to improve the outcome during the process. They adopted several evaluation methods, including usability testing, interface criticism, cognitive walkthrough, and heuristic evaluation at different stages to evaluate and improve the design outcomes. Instead of being an outside critic, they actively participated in the creation process. Product design students gained from the experience of working in a multi-role team, listening to the evaluation results, and integrating suggestions into their work. This paper reports the structure and outcomes of these design collaborations, highlights the gains and losses in the process, and most importantly, illustrates a potential path to conduct such design education in the future.

Assistive System Using Eye Gaze Estimation for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ...Editor IJCATR
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients cannot control their muscle except eyes in the later stage of the disease
progress. This paper aims to develop an eye-based assistive system that is controlled by the eye gaze to help ALS patients improve
their life quality. Two main functions are proposed in this paper. The first one is called HelpCall that can detect the users’ eye gaze to
active the corresponding events. ALS patients can “talk” with other people more easily by looking at specific buttons in the HelpCall
system. The second one is an eye-control browser that allows the users browsing web pages in Internet. We design an interface that
embeds the IE browser into several buttons controlled by the user eye gaze. ALS patients can visit the Internet only using their eyes in
our proposed system. This paper discusses our ideas for the assistive system and then describes the design and implementation of our
proposed system in details.

Beside the design & technology, ergonomy and aesthetic still the main design consideration of this product. The image design are taken from keywords “simple-futuristic” style. The design process include sketch-rendering-modelling-prototyping. This ppt is an improvement of previous paper with same subject. The main concern now is to describe the adjustable frame design, so Menicus can be use for any age user with many kind face characteristics. Authors hope that these early research can be continue and produce a real product.

"UX design for better patient care"
When developing medical device software, UX design is more than facilitating a positive user experience. It is also about preventing your design decisions from leading to any patient harm. In this talk, Carolien will outline the challenges and risks that arise when designing software for daily clinical use.
She will give you some practical insights on how the team at Nobel Biocare developed a UX process in line with ISO and FDA regulations that delivers software which is not only easy to use but also safe to use.
Usability Challenges in Cutting-edge Medical Devices and Exoskeleton RoboticsICS
As medical device and robotics technology mature and grow more capable they also become more complex, requiring focus on usability aspects from both a user experience (UX) design and regulatory perspective. These new applications, such as exoskeletons, demand a seamless interaction between the device and the user. That means designers and developers must improve utility while mitigating inherent risks.
This online panel will explore how to approach UX design for medtech and how it should plug into a product development cycle leading to a 510(k) submission. We will share lessons learned from studying exoskeletons for military applications, and explain how they can be applied to medical/rehabilitative applications.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
