This is a set of slides for the team working on the Arabic Symbol Dictionary as we decide which voting system to use when choosing the appropriateness of symbols for use in Qatar, their transparency when related to the words they represent, cultural sensitivity, contrast levels and how they complement PCS symbols already in use.

Editor's Notes
- 1 (Voters won’t see this explanation) Transparency – the word association with the picture is obvious – tend to be ‘guessable’ images of concrete objects or nouns. Translucency – word associated with the symbol has some connection but it may require some clarification – once the word or phrase is known these symbols become ‘guessable’. Opaque – the word associated with the picture is not obvious – not ‘guessable’, have little or no visual relationship and have to be learnt e.g = for ‘is’ or ‘are’. (Bloomberg et al., 1990; Fuller & Lloyd, 1991)
