HVDC TECHNOLOGY IS USED TO TRANSMIT
ELECTRICITY OVER LONG DISTANCE BY
COVER HEAD TRANSMISSION LINES OR
SUBMARINE CABLES.
HISTORY
• THE DEVELOPMENT OF DIRECT CURRENT (DC)
TRANSMISSION DATES BACK TO THE 1930’S AND
HAS BEEN A PROVEN TECHNOLOGY SINCE THE
FIRST MAJOR INSTALLATIONS IN
1954. OPERATING AT ±500 KILOVOLTS, THE LINE
IS CAPABLE OF TRANSMITTING UP TO 3,100 MW
OF POWER. IN TERMS OF OPERATING VOLTAGE
AND CAPACITY, THE PACIFIC INTERTIE IS
SIMILAR TO THE CLEAN LINE TRANSMISSION
LINE PROJECTS, WHICH WILL OPERATE AT ±600
KILOVOLTS AND DELIVER UP TO 3,500 MW OF
POWER.

  • 5. INTRODUCTION HVDC STANDS FOR HIGH VOLTAGE DIRECT CURRENT AND IS TODAY A WELL-PROVEN TECHNOLOGY EMPLOYED FOR POWER TRANSMISSION ALL OVER THE WORLD. HVDC TECHNOLOGY IS USED TO TRANSMIT ELECTRICITY OVER LONG DISTANCE BY COVER HEAD TRANSMISSION LINES OR SUBMARINE CABLES.
  • 6. HISTORY • THE DEVELOPMENT OF DIRECT CURRENT (DC) TRANSMISSION DATES BACK TO THE 1930’S AND HAS BEEN A PROVEN TECHNOLOGY SINCE THE FIRST MAJOR INSTALLATIONS IN 1954. OPERATING AT ±500 KILOVOLTS, THE LINE IS CAPABLE OF TRANSMITTING UP TO 3,100 MW OF POWER. IN TERMS OF OPERATING VOLTAGE AND CAPACITY, THE PACIFIC INTERTIE IS SIMILAR TO THE CLEAN LINE TRANSMISSION LINE PROJECTS, WHICH WILL OPERATE AT ±600 KILOVOLTS AND DELIVER UP TO 3,500 MW OF POWER.

  • 14. ADVANTAGES OF STABILITY OF HVDC SYSTEM FULL CONTROL OVER POWER TRANSMISSION. PERFORM EFFICIENT AND STABLE OPERATION. MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY OF POWER CONTROL WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE SAFETY OF EQUIVALENT. HIGHER VOLTAGE LEVEL AND POWER RATING. LOWER POWER LOSSES. LOWER COST OF CONVERTER.

CONCLUSION • THIS PRESENTATION PROVIDED AN OVERVIEW OF VOLTAGE/POWER STABILITY ANALYSIS METHODOLOGIES APPROPRIATE FOR NEWLY EMERGING HVDC SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS. • IT WAS SHOWN HOW THE METHODS SUITED FOR THE SINGLE- INFEED SYSTEM MODEL COULD BE EXTENDED TO THE HIGHER DIMENSION HVDC SYSTEM MODELS.
