Over the past two years, the OSv project has profiled tuning-sensitive applications with a special focus on Cassandra. Today, many of the important bottlenecks for NoSQL applications are tunable on a conventional OS, but do not require tuning in the OSv environment. OSv gives Cassandra a simpler environment, set up to run one application in a single address space. This talk will cover how to use OSv to improve performance in key areas such as JVM memory allocation and network throughput--without loading up your to-do list with difficult tuning tasks.

This document summarizes how Booking.com solved scalability issues with their Event Graphite Processor (EGP) system. The EGP processes large volumes of event data to generate metrics but was limited by high RAM usage. A new approach was developed that uses event streaming and parallelization, reducing processing time from over 120 seconds to 80 seconds while using much less RAM. This was achieved through a hackathon that rewrote 260 monitors in one day. The new system uses 56-core servers, processes events in parallel groups, and requires only 500MB of RAM compared to the previous 15GB.

Introduction to Vert.x

However, not all browsers support WebSockets yet. Socket.io addresses this by providing a WebSocket-like experience across all browsers through fallbacks like long-polling. It allows real-time applications to be developed more easily.

asyncio community, one year later
The asyncio project was officially launched with the release of Python 3.4 in March 2014. The project was public before that under the name “tulip”. asyncio is just a core network library, it requires third party library to be usable for common protocols. One year later, asyncio has a strong community writing libraries on top of it.
The most advanced library is aiohttp which includes a complete HTTP client but also a HTTP server. There are also libraries to access asynchronously the file system, resolve names with DNS, have variables local to tasks, read-write locks, etc. There are clients for AMQP, Asterisk, ElasticSearch, IRC, XMPP (Jabber), etc. (and even an IRC server!). There are asynchronous drivers for all common databases, and even for some ORMs. As expected, there are tons of new web frameworks based on asyncio. It’s also possible to plug asyncio into Gtk, Qt, gevent, eventlet, gunicorn, tornado, etc.
I will also discuss use cases of asyncio in production and benchmarks. Spoiler: asyncio is not slow.
The asyncio library also evolved to become more usable: it has a better documentation, is easier to debug and has a few new functions. There is also a port to Python 2: trollius.
Socket.io
Socket.io is a JavaScript library for real-time web applications. It enables real-time and bi-directional communication between web clients and servers. It transparently uses various transports like WebSocket, polling, and flash socket depending on client capabilities. It has features for authorization, timeouts, heartbeats, reconnection, and multiple sockets on the same connection. Socket.io can be used to build real-time applications involving websockets, like chat applications.
StrongLoop Overview
OpenSource API Server based on Node.js API framework built on supported Node.js platform with Tooling and DevOps. Use cases are Omni-channel API Server, Mobile Backend as a Service (mBaaS) or Next Generation Enterprise Service Bus. Key functionality include built in enterprise connectors, ORM, Offline Sync, Mobile and JS SDKs, Isomorphic JavaScript and Graphical API creation tool.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
