1 Pixel to the Left: Why Visual Design Details MatterEmily Rawitsch
Although we have all heard someone passionately declare, “UX is not UI,” visual design is a fundamental part of the user experience. Good design is in the details. It builds trust. It creates hierarchy of information. It makes buttons look clickable. It has the power to transform a functional experience into a delightful experience.
So how we can ensure that the visual details we design are brought to life as intended? Can moving an object 1 pixel to the left really make a difference? In an attempt to find a common language between designers and developers, we will discuss what details are worth fighting for versus when to let go.
We specialize in physical product design and engineering, and we use our lean product development approach to help customers turn their ideas into winning solutions.

Lean Startup, Design Thinking, and The Mindset of the SyllabusKyle Wild
Kyle Wild was invited to give a guest lecture at UC Berkeley on innovation. In his lecture, he discusses two common approaches to innovation - Design Thinking and Lean Startup. However, he is skeptical that any process can perfectly teach innovation. Wild argues that organizations should let their innovation processes emerge from their unique team identities rather than trying to force-fit an outside process. Ultimately, he concludes there is no set syllabus for innovation and advises erring on the side of too much chaos rather than too much structure.

This is a short talk and workshop (30' + 90') to give a first introduction to design thinking. Gives theory foundation, notes a few different approaches, and then dives into one of them.
This presentation was first done at ImpactON / StartupChile evening in 2015.
This document provides an overview of design thinking and the design thinking process. It discusses the following key points in 3 sentences:
1) Design thinking is an approach to solving problems by understanding user needs through contact, observation and empathy in order to design solutions that fit within their environment, as opposed to jumping straight to solutions or focusing on technology.
2) The design thinking process involves understanding needs, observing users, synthesizing insights, ideating solutions, prototyping ideas, and iterating based on user feedback to revisit assumptions and sometimes go back to earlier steps in the process.
3) An example of applying design thinking at a startup is described where user interviews and observations were conducted with teenagers to understand their communication

Enrique Allen, D Fund - Warm Gun Conference500 Startups
The document discusses designer founders in tech. It defines what is meant by design, which goes beyond just visual design to include interface, information architecture, interaction design, functional specifications, content requirements, underlying technology, and user-product-business hypotheses and objectives. It defines what is meant by designer founders, noting they need skills across engineering, design, and business stacks as well as the ability to continuously guide their product and organization through design cycles. Critical assertions made are that differentiated brand and experience design from designer founders will be crucial to short- and long-term success in the crowded consumer tech market, and having a multi-disciplinary designer founder is a competitive advantage.
This document discusses the importance of design for startups. It provides principles of good design from Dieter Rams, including that design should be innovative, useful, aesthetic, understandable, unobtrusive, honest, long-lasting, thorough, environmentally friendly, and as minimal as possible. It emphasizes that design is not just about aesthetics but also how a product works and is experienced by users. Good design considers the user experience and involves gathering user feedback in an iterative process.
What got us here will not get us there - FinTech Design Summit #FDSNTCJose Coronado
What got us here will not get us there
The impact of design is growing and the demand for design talent is increasing. More designers are rising to leadership roles. Management consulting and research firms are showcasing the business value of design. However, reality shows a contrasting picture as there are hundreds of design teams at different levels of influence in their organizations.
We have to invest in our people. We must create opportunities for career growth to help designers progress. At the same time, we need to create conditions for emerging and established design leaders to succeed. We have to build a strong foundation of influence, strategy, and value to the customer, our peers, our teams and our organizations.
This presentation is focused on what we can do to pave the way for our design teams to amplify the impact of their work. The stories I share are primarily based on my leadership journey and are supplemented by interviews with design leaders from around the world.
Russell Wilson has had a career spanning various roles in design and technology companies. His experiences have taught him that empathy, salesmanship, tenacity, integrity, accountability, team, top-down support, governance, and collaboration are key to success in design. He started companies, led design teams at large corporations, and advocates for design thinking processes like prototyping early ideas and building with user feedback.
Org Design for Design Orgs - The WorkshopPeter Merholz
As the move to establish in-house design teams accelerates, it turns out there’s very little common wisdom on what makes for a successful design organization. Books and presentations focus on process, methods, tools, and outcomes, leaving a gap of knowledge when it comes to organizational and operational matters. This workshop seeks to address this lacuna by shining a light on the unsung activities of actually running a design team, and what works and what doesn’t.
Topics include:
- How a service design mindset shifts standard organizational approaches
- Organizational models for design teams, from centralized to decentralized and back again
- Breadth and depth of skills and strategic thinking
- The 5 Stages of Organisational Evolution
- A New Taxonomy of Design Team Roles
Design Thinking in Business: An Introduction to Imagineering and an Illustrat...Mario Ramirez Reyes
Design thinking in business involves imagining new solutions and approaches to problems through creativity and holistic problem solving rather than linear analysis. It challenges traditional frames and encourages diverging into multiple possibilities. Designing for business means planning organizations that can transform with their changing context. Imagineering applies a design approach to value creation by using imagination to engage people through compelling new artifacts.
Thanks to popular business publications like Harvard Business Review and Fortune, 'design' has become a hot new trend. Along with serious design agency acquisitions by some of the biggest global consultancies and institutions (Accenture + Fjord / McKinsey + Lunar / Capital One + Adaptive Path / etc) design finally has a seat at the table as companies big and small are starting to see the benefits it can bring to their bottom line.
While some struggle to integrate newly formed design departments and practitioners into a staid and stoic culture that doesn't truly understand the process of good design, others have realised that it requires understanding, effort and a willingness to commit to change.
How Design Thinking will fix Design ThinkingBert Bräutigam
1. Design thinking has been misperceived as only involving designers when it actually requires interdisciplinary teams across design, business, and technology disciplines.
2. Effective product teams have design, business, and technology leads working together, with the design discipline playing a transversal role rather than being dissolved into other areas.
3. Experience metrics are now part of product key performance indicators to measure user behavior and experience, alongside traditional business and technology metrics.
PDF, audio, and voiceover are now available on designintechreport.wordpress.com
Today’s most beloved technology products and services balance design and engineering in a way that perfectly blends form and function. Businesses started by designers have created billions of dollars of value, are raising billions in capital, and VC firms increasingly see the importance of design. The third annual Design in Tech Report examines how design trends are revolutionizing the entrepreneurial and corporate ecosystems in tech. This report covers related M&A activity, new patterns in creativity × business, and the rise of computational design.
NASSCOM Design4India Design Summit & Awards 2019 - Not Another Brick in the W...NASSCOM Design4India
The document discusses challenges faced by designers in corporate environments. It includes quotes from design alumni expressing frustration that their skills and contributions are not fully understood or utilized. For example, one alumnus notes that companies are built for engineers, not designers, and designers are not always given challenging or meaningful work. Another says design thinking is overused for business purposes without understanding what designers can truly offer. The document advocates for organizations to develop more design-centric cultures where design plays a central, strategic role and designers have opportunities to lead and contribute creatively.
AgileUX, Lean Start Up, Design Thinking and how it all aligns - dave landisDave Landis
The document summarizes Dave Landis' talk on aligning Lean UX, Design Thinking, Agile, and Lean Startup to create customer-focused products. It shows how each approach contributes at different stages: Design Thinking discovers customer needs through research; Agile discovers solutions in an exploratory way; Lean Startup discovers problems through validating hypotheses; and Lean finds efficiencies. The slides provide examples of how these approaches fit together in a process.
The document provides a summary of the job experience and qualifications of Daniel Clayton diPaolo as a graphic designer, web designer, and art director. It details his experience in these roles from 2001 to present for various companies such as Mammoth Restoration & Construction, BMI Elite, Biomet3i, Lexis Nexis, Taglit-Birthright Israel, Regulus Group LLC, MJM Internet, Smart Design LLC, and Jesper Office Inc. It also lists his education and skills in areas such as Adobe Creative Suite, programming languages, illustration, photography, and print production.
This document outlines an approach to design called "design as one". It advocates that designers should not see themselves as the sole owners of user experience but rather as enablers who work as part of a learning team. The key aspects of this approach include asking users questions, listening to their perspectives, and thinking critically as a team to gain insights and make evidence-based decisions. By facilitating collaboration and ensuring everyone's voices are heard, designers can help create synergy across teams and lead users to the best solutions. Ultimately, this framework is meant to apply not just to designers but to working as one cohesive unit to achieve shared goals.
Design Research: How to frame the right questions for your design processSantiago Bustelo
Great design comes from good decisions and excellent execution.
Design Research informs those Design Decisions.
What we think we know… is it actually valid? or is just a collection of stereotypes and prejudices? What do we really need to know? Who can we get that information from? How can we get it without contaminating the sample?
This presentation introduces the essential techniques that answer these questions, that need to be addressed along the Design process.
UX STRAT Europe, Andreas Hauser: Convincing IT and Business to Value DesignUX STRAT
The document discusses convincing IT and business leaders to value design. It notes that while design is growing in importance, IT currently allocates few resources to it. The document outlines short-term and long-term approaches to increasing appreciation for design. Short-term involves quick wins to improve user experience, while long-term focuses on innovating through design thinking and creating a culture of innovation. It argues that showing measurable outcomes of design projects can help gain support for more investment in the discipline.
The document discusses how design has evolved from focusing on aesthetics and efficiency to leading innovation through intuitive, experimental, and empathetic approaches. It also discusses how designers are uniquely positioned to explore new ideas and reach new solutions. Motion design is described as a convergence of various disciplines like animation, illustration, and graphic design. The goal-directed design process emphasizes understanding users and defining products through research rather than isolated visual design. Strategic designers are said to be able to think at both a high level and in details, know the design process well, and leverage teams effectively.
Over the past 20 years, the document's author has worked in user experience (UX) roles across various industries, including business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and entertainment. They have held UX leadership positions at large companies like Microsoft, Getty Images, and SAP, as well as worked at design agencies and film studios. The author has experience building and leading high-performing UX teams from scratch and currently offers workshops and speaks on topics like design thinking, agile UX, and lean UX.
Data Driven UX - From social to eXperience - McGraw-Hill Education - Lunch & ...nois3
One could be Prince Charles, the other Ozzy Osbourne. We voluntarily spend hours on social networks following topics, brands, and people. But when designing user experiences, rarely do we consider using data derived from monitoring and analyzing social conversations. In this brief speech, I¹m going to discuss the methodology we adopted in nois3 for identifying target demographics and influencers through the analysis of social conversations enriched by successive targeted searches.
Only after this process do we decide on a strategy for creating the user experience. This is what Data Driven UX really is.
Unicorns are considered to be the rare person who can do both design and development. But, why are they considered rare? Because consider design and development to be separate disciplines.
In this talk, I explore the spectrum of design and development, how designers can be empowered by learning about development, and how developers can be empowered by learning about design.
I gave this talk at the Big Design Conference in Addison, TX on September 6, 2014.
Class 2: Setting the foundation for a successful website designDon Stanley
This document summarizes a lecture on web design and core principles. It discusses design as a problem solving process involving communication. Key aspects of design covered include contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity to guide the eye and differentiate elements. The lecture also discusses thinking like users by considering how they scan pages and make satisficing choices rather than optimal ones.
