Executive Summary
The Uxperts project team conducted usability tests on the UALR Mapping Renewal. The UALR Map-
ping Renewal is an online, interactive map of the city of Little Rock from the approximate years of 1940
- 2010. The map is intended as a resource for educators, students, and other individuals interested in the
history of Little Rock during the Civil Rights and Urban Renewal eras in particular and the history and
city growth of Little Rock in general. The usability tests were performed remote via Zoom and in-person
at CRUX lab. Five participants tested the UALR Mapping Renewal site by completing a series of tasks
that took about one hour. Each session was recorded and analyzed to find potential improvements con-
cerning navigation, organization, and searchability questions needed to execute the next design iteration.
Overall, all participants agreed the site was very straightforward. 5 out of 5 participants found the site
easy-to-use. Two out of 5 participants (40%) were familiar with mapping tools.
The top finding are grouped into the following categories:
Positive
Feedback
• Users enjoyed the information they were able to access by simply clicking
the Map Pins. It gave them a better picture of the area of the map they
were view
• Users enjoyed the city growth feature, citing it as “intuitive” and “unique”.
• Users remarked that the Zoom functionality worked very well and was
enjoyable to use.
Negative
Feedback
• Users were frustrated that the filter bar in the search results box did not
work.
• Users were unhappy with the lack of defined and limited search results as
well as biased information.
• Some users were displeased page response time while navigating and ac-
cessing content.
Suprises
• Users preferred other date range selection options instead of the slider at
the top of the map.
• Users did not seem interested in clicking the architectural drawings icon
on the map.
• Users navigated to “about” to find background information before starting
the test.
Suggestions
• Users suggested adding a Red Zoning feature on the map.
• Users would like to see photos associated with the city growth in addition
to the city growth tool
• Users would like to have a comparison button for maps.
• Add and tag information related to african american history (i.e. schools,
churches, etc.)

Methodology
The test administrator contacted and recruited participants through phone discovery and email blasts.
The test administrator sent emails to participants sharing testing details and asking for their availability
and input. During the usability assessment, Six participants successfully:
• Completed a user background questionnaire
• Answered questions regarding site
• Executed tasks on the site using think aloud method
• Answered questions about overall satisfaction

Tasks & Scenarios
Participants were given six scenarios to complete tasks on the site. The tasks were provided in order and
participants were reminded to use the think aloud method. Here are the tasks presented:
Scenario Task
During civil rights lessons, you walk your students through
the changes in Little Rock related to segregation.
use a variety of search methods to explore some of those locations
over time.
After searching a topic, you’d like to search for another one.
Conduct a second search for something you find to be of
interest.
Conduct a second search for something you find to be of interest.
You want to find a specific type of location within a specific
time period.
Find the names of 3 schools between 1950-1960.
You want to compare two maps to aid research or teaching
about changes over time.
Find two maps and make a comparison
One of your students is interested in learning more about the
building located at 7915 West Markham Street.
Use the Zoom feature to explore the map.
You want to briefly explore different parts of the area. Identify different types of information can you find regarding the
location you chose.
Choose a historically important location on the map that you
would want to research.
Identify different types of information can you find regarding the
location you chose.
Over the years, expansion has changed the land around Little
Rock.
Using the map, how can you see those changes?

Results
The UXperts measured the success or failure of each task performed by users to gather performance
data. If the participants used the most direct or indirect path, then successful completion is designated. If
the particpant believes the task is completely correctly or gives up, then the task is declared as a fail.

The UXperts analyzed preference data gathered from the participant responses to queries on the post-
task questionnaire. The average response ratingn indicates participant confidence level and satisfaction.

Some users miss the Address Search tab to
search for a specific location
Change the visual representation of the search
options by placing the options to search by
address or keyword in the middle of the box be-
low the header letting the user know that there
are two choices. Remove “any of these terms/
all of these terms” and replace with keyword or
phrase and address. Make these options bold
print paired with buttons.

Conclusion
While the participants of this study were able to complete most tasks, there were several items that did
not function as expected or that require more distinction. The UXperts team would like to make the fol-
lowing recommendations to improve the Mapping Renewal project:
Several participants stated the site loaded slow and attributed the cause to page elements and vast amounts of images.
Most of the participants found the terminology easy to understand and that the tools were well integrated. Executing
the recommendations and continued usability testing will create a user-centered website.

  • 3. 3 Executive Summary The Uxperts project team conducted usability tests on the UALR Mapping Renewal. The UALR Map- ping Renewal is an online, interactive map of the city of Little Rock from the approximate years of 1940 - 2010. The map is intended as a resource for educators, students, and other individuals interested in the history of Little Rock during the Civil Rights and Urban Renewal eras in particular and the history and city growth of Little Rock in general. The usability tests were performed remote via Zoom and in-person at CRUX lab. Five participants tested the UALR Mapping Renewal site by completing a series of tasks that took about one hour. Each session was recorded and analyzed to find potential improvements con- cerning navigation, organization, and searchability questions needed to execute the next design iteration. Overall, all participants agreed the site was very straightforward. 5 out of 5 participants found the site easy-to-use. Two out of 5 participants (40%) were familiar with mapping tools. The top finding are grouped into the following categories: Positive Feedback • Users enjoyed the information they were able to access by simply clicking the Map Pins. It gave them a better picture of the area of the map they were view • Users enjoyed the city growth feature, citing it as “intuitive” and “unique”. • Users remarked that the Zoom functionality worked very well and was enjoyable to use. Negative Feedback • Users were frustrated that the filter bar in the search results box did not work. • Users were unhappy with the lack of defined and limited search results as well as biased information. • Some users were displeased page response time while navigating and ac- cessing content. Suprises • Users preferred other date range selection options instead of the slider at the top of the map. • Users did not seem interested in clicking the architectural drawings icon on the map. • Users navigated to “about” to find background information before starting the test. Suggestions • Users suggested adding a Red Zoning feature on the map. • Users would like to see photos associated with the city growth in addition to the city growth tool • Users would like to have a comparison button for maps. • Add and tag information related to african american history (i.e. schools, churches, etc.)
  • 4. 4 Methodology The test administrator contacted and recruited participants through phone discovery and email blasts. The test administrator sent emails to participants sharing testing details and asking for their availability and input. The tasks were provided in order and participants were reminded to use the think aloud method. Here are the tasks presented: Scenario Task During civil rights lessons, you walk your students through the changes in Little Rock related to segregation. use a variety of search methods to explore some of those locations over time. After searching a topic, you’d like to search for another one. Conduct a second search for something you find to be of interest. Conduct a second search for something you find to be of interest. You want to find a specific type of location within a specific time period. Find the names of 3 schools between 1950-1960. You want to compare two maps to aid research or teaching about changes over time. Find two maps and make a comparison One of your students is interested in learning more about the building located at 7915 West Markham Street. Use the Zoom feature to explore the map. You want to briefly explore different parts of the area. Identify different types of information can you find regarding the location you chose.   • 5. 5 Results The UXperts measured the success or failure of each task performed by users to gather performance data. If the participants used the most direct or indirect path, then successful completion is designated. If the particpant believes the task is completely correctly or gives up, then the task is declared as a fail. The average response ratingn indicates participant confidence level and satisfaction.
  • 6. 6 Findings and Recommendations Category Area of Concern Recommendation Severity Presentation, Layout and Visual Design Some users miss the Address Search tab to search for a specific location Change the visual representation of the search options by placing the options to search by address or keyword in the middle of the box be- low the header letting the user know that there are two choices. Remove “any of these terms/ all of these terms” and replace with keyword or phrase and address. Make these options bold print paired with buttons. High Search Users noted that the search bar at the top of the search results box does not function at all. Add functionality to the filter bar within the search results box and/or create a sort option by file type, relevance, etc. Medium Presentation, Layout and Visual Design Users are unable to quickly find maps, since the Filter by icons to the left of Media For- mat and Date Range don’t appear clickable. Change the icons to +/-. Present the options with (+) and allow them to be hid- den with (-). Medium Functionality Some users noted that the links on the pins lead to broken or non-existent pages. If the links are for pages that do not yet exist then disable them until those pages are active. If the links are for pages that do exist, then they need to be fixed. Low Functionality When users were searching for a location by address they were unhappy that the address they searched did not have a pin drop or highlight on the map. Add functionality for a pin to drop on the map to indicate the address searched. Low Conclusion While the participants of this study were able to complete most tasks, there were several items that did not function as expected or that require more distinction. The UXperts team would like to make the fol- lowing recommendations to improve the Mapping Renewal project: Several participants stated the site loaded slow and attributed the cause to page elements and vast amounts of images. Most of the participants found the terminology easy to understand and that the tools were well integrated. Executing the recommendations and continued usability testing will create a user-centered website.
