Viruses
Viruses are particles that can only reproduce by infecting living cells. They enter cells and use the cell's machinery to produce more viruses. There are two main types of viral infection - lytic infections cause the cell to burst and release new viruses, while lysogenic infections allow the virus to lay dormant inside the cell. Viruses can cause many serious diseases in humans and animals like polio, cancer, and mad cow disease. They are not considered alive since they cannot reproduce outside of a host cell.
