Adaptive Products: Designing for evolution through useSimon King
The document discusses the concept of adaptive products, which are designed to evolve through use over time in response to changing needs and situations. It argues that traditional user-centered design is not enough to ensure long-term usefulness. Adaptive products allow for flexibility and customization by users through visible seams between modular layers that change at different rates. Designers can encourage adaptation by empowering users to edit product scripts and sharing adaptations through user communities.
The document discusses the evolution and future prospects of 3D display technology. It begins with Leonardo da Vinci first noticing the phenomenon of binocular vision 500 years ago. It then outlines major milestones in 3D technology from the 1600s to present day, including the development of 3D photography, stereoscopes, and glasses-based viewing methods. The document discusses various 3D display technologies and devices, including TVs, cameras, projectors, and applications in areas like gaming, movies, medical imaging, and virtual reality. It concludes by noting changes in the home entertainment market, with consumers investing more in technologies like 3D TV as the housing market forces people to stay in their current homes longer.
3D printing allows for the rapid creation of physical models from digital designs through a layer-by-layer process. It reduces costs and time in product development by enabling numerous design iterations and quick prototyping. 3D printing has applications across many industries including engineering, industrial design, architecture, and healthcare. It provides benefits like faster design cycles, lower costs, and the ability to quickly test fit and function of prototypes.
The document outlines an agenda for a conference with 10 speakers discussing topics like intuitive automation, open hardware, hardware acceleration programs, and strategies for starting whole-brained startups. It includes slides and information from several of the speakers about their companies and areas of focus.
The document discusses the importance of incorporating visual art into industrial product design. It argues that visual art is not just about aesthetics, but is a form of human expression that can be applied to engineering products through techniques like incorporating various materials, textures, and artistic compositions. When applied throughout a product's visible and non-visible areas, visual art can help differentiate products, drive consumer experience and consideration, and ultimately empower economies. The document advocates training more engineering designers capable of transforming functional designs into aspirational products through the application of visual art principles.

3D digital modelling and 3D printing: the case for using Anarkik3D's 3D haptic Cloud9 sketch/modelling software to assess these technologies for the non CAD user, the artist, applied artist, designer markers and all creative people.
3D modeling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of a three-dimensional object using specialized software. 3D modeling has its origins in stereoscopy and stereographic photography from the 1840s but saw increased usage with the development of 3D film and IMAX technologies in later decades. Today, 3D modeling is used across industries like engineering, product design, architecture, and medicine to create realistic digital representations of objects that can be rotated, analyzed, and interacted with virtually.

This document outlines Noor Al-Doy's research into developing a digital industrial design (DID) methodology and curriculum. Phase 1 involved a literature review on industrial design tools, technologies, education, and digital tool classifications. Phase 2 aimed to develop a DID methodology through case studies and surveys of graduating students. Key findings were that students value hands-on modeling and sketching, and do not believe digital tools can replace this. However, a viable DID methodology was proposed integrating pen tablets, 3D modeling, prototyping, and other tools. Future plans include refining the methodology and gathering practitioner feedback.
The document summarizes Noor Al-Doy's research into developing a Digital Industrial Design (DID) methodology and curriculum. DeSReS 2013 - Computer-aided Consumer Design for AM / 3D printing productsYudhi Ariadi
This document summarizes Yudhi Ariadi's PhD research presented at the Loughborough Design School Research Student Conference in 2013. The research examined developing easy-to-use consumer design software to enable users to customize products for additive manufacturing. Surveys found consumers were interested in designing their own products but had concerns about surface finish and color quality of 3D printed outputs. The proposed "CaCODE" software would allow basic shape editing and customization of "unfinished" designs to be completed by designers before 3D printing. This approach aimed to make additive manufacturing more accessible to consumers while addressing issues with print quality.
Consumer lead design and manufacturingYudhi Ariadi
The talk discusses the possibility of the general public to lead the design and manufacturing of a product. According to the trend of products and services, consumers are now getting closer to independently producing products and services. For instance photography and photo printing where customer can easily take a picture and print the picture by themselves. In addition, in travel management, nowadays people do not need to ask the travel agent to arrange their itinerary but they can do it by themselves through online websites. Similar manner would also happen in terms of manufacturing a product. With the development of 3D printing and consumer design software the general public’s capability can be increased to produce their own desired product.
Can consumers design and manufacture products by themselves?Yudhi Ariadi
The one-slide in three minutes presentation has been awarded for the 3rd place research snapshot at the East Midlands Universities Postgraduate Research Student Conference on 6 September 2013.
Templates for Consumer Use in Designing Customised ProductsYudhi Ariadi
This research proposes a new design system for consumers who would use the product to run an easy-to-operate design and selection tool by themselves instead of conventional Computer Aided Design (CAD). In terms of manufacturing the product, several studies focus on involving the consumer as much and as early as possible. However, recent developments of Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technologies have led to a renewed interest in allowing the consumers to develop customised products. As a result, manufacturing is being brought closer to consumers. This paper would simplify the CAD stages by utilising design templates for consumer use in customising additive layer manufactured products.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

A Research Idea :
Virtual Reality Aided Design (VRaD)
Abstract :
To create a Virtual Reality aided Design (VRaD) that aims to develop an
easy‐to‐operate aided design system, instead of a conventional Computer
Aided Design (CAD).
Several developments in field of design, VR and Haptic, have led to a
renewed interest in how to make design in 3D modelling. This idea
emerged to anticipate the rapid growth of Additive Manufacturing (AM)
technologies where in the future, consumers will be able to create the
products their desire. Consequently, design areas need to be developed as
simplistic as the AM technologies have.
To develop a user friendly design system by combining CAD, VR and Haptic
fingers for consumers who would perform aspects of the design and
thereby endorse the manufacture of the products themselves.

A Research Idea : Virtual Reality Aided Design (VRaD)
Problem:
• In the future everything could be produced at home.
So… If consumers have the AM machine on their desktop……..
• Consumers’ view
This mug is not suitable for me..
My husband has a desktop AM machine..
But I need several months CAD training to
make my own design…
• Industrials’ view
I can make a thousand AM machines,
so consumers can create their desired product.
But.. How can they create their desired design if
CAD is not easy to operate?
