However, recent developments of Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) technologies have led to a renewed interest in allowing the consumers to develop customised products. As a result, manufacturing is being brought closer to consumers. Studi sepeda bambu ini bertujuan untuk membuat rancangan dan prototipe sepeda yang sebagian besar rangkanya berbahan bambu. Perancangan dilakukan dengan pemodelan 3 dimensi dan pengujian dijalankan secara teoritis dengan metode elemen hingga berbasis komputer, serta pembuatan prototipe. Penelitian ini adalah studi awal bagian dari penelitian yang berujung pada pengujian struktur fisik rangka di laboratorium dan pengujian laik jalan (road test). Hal ini dilakukan untuk mengantisipasi meningkatnya penggunaan sepeda, yang merupakan respon masyarakat atas solusi untuk menekan penggunaan bahan bakar fosil dan menurunkan tingkat emisi transportasi. Sebagai bahan alternatif pengganti bahan logam, yaitu bahan yang secara luas digunakan pada sepeda, diharapkan dapat mengurangi penggunaan energi yang besar dan gas CO2 yang tinggi dalam proses pengolahan logam. Penelitian ini menggunakan bambu apus (Gigantochloa apus) sebagai sumber daya alam lokal yang ada disekitar Politeknik Negeri Jakarta. Dan dari hasil pengujian secara teoritis, terlihat bahwa kekuatan daripada bahan yang diuji secara simulasi secara berurutan adalah: paduan baja, paduan titanium, paduan aluminium dan bambu sebagai bahan yang terlemah. Namun demikian, besarnya tegangan maksimum yang terjadi pada bambu masih dibawah kekuatan luluhnya.
