Viral hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver caused by viruses. The five main types are Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Hepatitis A is transmitted via the fecal-oral route and causes an acute infection. Hepatitis B can be transmitted sexually or parenterally and may cause chronic infection. Hepatitis C is commonly transmitted via blood and may also result in chronic infection and liver damage. Hepatitis D only infects those also infected with Hepatitis B. Hepatitis E typically causes a self-limiting infection transmitted via the fecal-oral route. While symptoms and transmission routes vary, all five types can potentially cause liver inflammation and damage.
