 Van Gogh was interested in painting artificial
light at night
 When he painted The Night Café, he slept
during the day and stayed up all night for 4
days
 The painting shows pessimism
 The café was not a good place to be

sunflowers to decorate the house
• Van Gogh’s friend Gauguin kept putting off
going to Arles to be with Vincent van Gogh
• Gauguin finally moved in with van Gogh, but
it didn’t last for long
• Gauguin knew he had to move out because
he couldn’t get along with van Gogh

 Van Gogh’s dream of having all of his artist
friends working together was shattered
 After van Gogh found out that Gauguin
wanted to leave, van Gogh painted their
chairs as portraits
 Gauguin stayed with van Gogh because van
Gogh’s mental health began to deteriorate

 In 1889, when he was 36, Vincent van Gogh
chose to move into a mental hospital
 The hospital was near Saint-Remy-de
Provence, near Arles
 He didn’t want to live by himself or start a
new studio
 Van Gogh was also upset because his
brother was going to get married soon

 The hospital wasn’t very good
 The hospital’s doctor wasn’t even a mental
health specialist
 Van Gogh didn’t receive any medical
attention
 He was diagnosed as suffering epileptic fits

• He would go through
long periods of
depression, and
sometimes his art would
help him
• During periods of
wellness, he made lots of
paintings
• Van Gogh suffered from
hallucinations and
thoughts of suicide,
followed by depression,
during the bad times

work had these characteristics…
• Wavy curves
• Sharp dashes
• These brushstrokes show movement and
tension/excitement

 Starry Night was different from Vincent van

made from memory of an earlier painting that

• In 1890, Vincent van Gogh was the subject of
an article in an art magazine for the first time
• He left the hospital to go to Paris to visit his
family
• Theo had a baby son named after Vincent
• Van Gogh also sold a painting, Red Vineyard,
which was one of the few he sold while alive
• He was also going to participate in an art show

jeopardy, and his was wife was exhausted
 Van Gogh’s money situation was on shaky
ground
 Van Gogh and Gachet ended their friendship

• Every day, van Gogh made a new painting,
sometimes even two
• His paintings helped him from being sick and
lonely
• However, one day when he was feeling like a
failure in life, Vincent van Gogh shot himself
• He died two days later
• Vincent van Gogh died in 1890

  • 34. VINCENT VAN GOGH  In 1889, when he was 36, Vincent van Gogh chose to move into a mental hospital  The hospital was near Saint-Remy-de Provence, near Arles  He didn’t want to live by himself or start a new studio  Van Gogh was also upset because his brother was going to get married soon
  • 35. VINCENT VAN GOGH  The hospital wasn’t very good  The hospital’s doctor wasn’t even a mental health specialist  Van Gogh didn’t receive any medical attention  He was diagnosed as suffering epileptic fits

  1. Checkpoints are a good way to get students to repeat information so they remember what they just heard. I ask one student to repeat the job and another to repeat the time limit to check for understanding before they start. I then pick a few student to share their answers with the class.
