You’ll get advice on how to make player decisions have real weight, why strong writing is your most powerful asset, how to streamline development without weakening the experience, and how to use fun to enhance (instead of distract from) learning. Whether you’re an experienced gamer or someone who hasn’t picked up a controller since you were a kid, there’s lots anyone can take from this session to make their scenarios more enjoyable and useful for their learners. And it’ll also give you a great excuse to pick up a few new games in the name of “work research.”

This proposal is for a survival horror game called "The Eternals". It aims to entertain horror game fans through scaring the player using sound, lighting, and imagery. The game will feature PVE combat, survival mechanics where players must manage resources, and both linear and non-linear story elements. Players must figure out the story and solve puzzles to progress. It targets male players aged 16-24 from working class backgrounds who enjoy survival and combat in horror games. The game is aimed at a PEGI 16 rating, and will feature violent, sexual, and frightening content including cult activities and body horror.

March 2018 talk at the monthly meeting of Women in Games Boston on what game studies researchers and game developers might learn form each other through cross-industry dialogue. I discuss what game studies is, my own attempts to engage with this dialogue, and present links to resources for those interested in learning more about game studies.

This qualitative study examined the perceived effects of video games on intelligence among individuals in Cebu. The researcher admits to biases as an avid gamer who wants to justify gaming expenses to his wife. The study sought to understand the gaming habits of participants and determine if gaming affects intelligence or daily life. Data was collected through interviews and a gaming test using Nintendo Brain Age. Results found most participants started gaming young and some failed classes due to "binge gaming." However, gaming may slightly benefit brain development in short bursts. The researcher generated the "Dublin's game time theory" that time spent gaming is inversely related to a person's age. Implications are that parents should monitor children's gaming and it may decrease as a hobby
