Detailed Music Video
Arctic Monkeys – R U Mine
Josh Brison
0:04
This frame shows a medium shot of musician and DJ
Steve Jones, who in the video announcing a new
song by the Arctic Monkeys on his own radio station
Jones’s Jukebox. This introduction to the song makes
the song look like a hit before it was even listened to
by anyone.
0:27
This medium close up shot shows Arctic Monkey front man Alex Turner and drummer
Matt Helders in a jeep, air drumming to their own song which is being played on the
radio. This is particularly interesting as the audience do not have a clear both of both
band member, which is odd as in conventional music videos the camera work would be
much more professional, capturing all people in the frame clearly.
0:58
This frame is again in the black and white, an effect which is maintained throughout
the video which is rather strange for a music video. The shot used in this frame
would appear to be Alex Turner taking a “Selfie” of himself in the jeep, being passed
the camera from a figure in the back seat who is revealed later in the video.
This frame shows another close up of Alex turner singing the song being
played on the radio. Already the Arctic Monkeys have made themselves
look pretty cool with the aid of a leather interior, shades, gelled hair and
the colour effect. The single was put onto their latest album AM, the
band’s 4th album to date. From day one the band have brought across a
stylish attitude, which has been maintained throughout their career.
2:09
This frame shows a medium shot of Nick O’Malley in the back seats with two girls
dressed up as cowgirls. This shot has been screenshotted just as the chorus sings “R
U Mine tomorrow”. As Nick sings this line, the lights above him light up, revealing
the two girls in fancy dress. Having two girls in the back of a Cadillac in fancy dress
portrays the kind of life Arctic Monkeys live.
2:22
This close up of Matt Helders shows a side view of him playing the drums along to the
song on the radio. This doesn’t follow the conventions of music videos as usually we
would see the drummer playing the actual drums synced to the song in the background,
where as Matt is simply hitting the steering wheel with his sticks along to the song on the
radio as an ordinary fan would.
2:41
This frame again mirrors how Arctic Monkeys have not followed
the usual conventions of music videos where we see the band
playing their instruments. The medium shot of Alex shows him
playing the air guitar to the song in the background of the radio
3:09
This frame shows the full band playing the ending of the song. This long shot od
the band playing follows the conventions of band music videos, unlike the rest
of the video. The band have aimed to end the video as dramatically as possible
with fireworks, smoke and attractive women as viewers will most likely
remember the end of the video. Also the song name “R U Mine” could play a
part in the dramatic , such as connotations of Alex trying to impress a girl after
a night out/.
3:42
The video then ends with a medium shot of Steve Jones sticking his thumb
up, indicating that the song has finished playing on the radio. Although the
video ends with the band playing the song, the video keeps the same
narrative by including Phil Jones’s radio station at the very end of the
video.
